Mossypaw's Fear

I guess this is a 150 (155) follower special, though you are welcome to PM me if you have another idea.

Mossypaw walked into the clearing, Sunpaw at her heels. She turned around to face him. "Sunpaw, I- I don't know if Riverstorm will live much longer." She drew in a deep, shuddering breath. "You saw how Brackenstar looked before he- before he...he-" She stared down at her paws. Sunpaw looked at her with a cross between sorrow, pity, & resentment.

"I know—" He began, but he clearly thought better of it. He shifted his paws and copied Mossypaw's position. Mossypaw glanced at him, her eyes full of hot tears.

"When Riverstorm comes around..." Mossypaw trailed off. They both knew what she meant—if he came around.

"It's a miracle that he is alive, isn't it?" Sunpaw asked quietly. Mossypaw nodded before she dissolved into tears. Her fur was streaked, her salty tears glistening in the falling sun. She opened her to say yes, but the words caught in her throat.

"All we can do is pray to StarClan that he makes it." She replied finally. Sunpaw looked at her, then quickly looked away.

"Look at his heavy breathing right now." Sunpaw said, his face turned toward the other side of the clearing, where the currently unconscious Riverstorm lay. Mossypaw couldn't look, already feeling sick to her stomach.

"Just hope and pray that he lives, Sunpaw. Just hope and pray." She repeated. Around them, the trees were bathed in sunlight, last rays illuminating the leaves before the sun sank from the sky. Mossypaw's fur shone even brighter, showing the small, wet tracks down her cheeks.

"What happens if he dies?" Sunpaw said, this question even quieter than the last. Mossypaw looked to the first of the stars in the darkening sky, searching for some kind of sign. She didn't know how to answer Sunpaw.

"His fate is in the paws of our ancestors." She decided to say. Sunpaw nodded, not saying anything. He probably knew that nothing could comfort her right now. She had failed to save Brackenstar's life; she couldn't bear to be responsible for someone else's death. She shook her head slightly. She couldn't let Sunpaw see her fear. Mossypaw kept her eyes on the brightest of the stars, until the moon rose to block it, and it was lost from her sight.
