This is a one-shot from Ember's perspective. You have to have read what is published of River to understand this! This contains spoilers!
•Ember•
Ember hated her life. She hated all of it. She hated her family (what was left of it, anyway), she hated her friends (the few that she had), and she hated Tad. Tad was her arch enemy. Tad was the stuck-up, nosy, bratty, annoying, arrogant brother of her crush. Her crush on the other hand, was handsome, smart, kind, charming, and whatever other positive traits you can think of. His name was River.
River was the only thing about her life that she didn't hate. She knew her crush was stupid because they were only two moons old. This was how life was. Until Lucky most likely drowned, that was. Her breath caught in her throat as she stared after the devastated shape of River screaming for his brother.
Ember shook herself out her memories as she stared into the eyes of the stranger. She tried to be menacing, but she wasn't sure Light was convinced. "You fell for it." She tried to smirk. Light appeared behind the stranger.
"Fell for what?" The stranger asked. He took a step back and bumped into Light.
"Good work, Ember." Light growled. Ember rolled her eyes.
"It's not that hard laying on the ground yowling your head off. Thanks anyway, Light Feather." Oops. Ember could practically feel Light's gaze burning a hole in her. She cowered as Light reared up above her.
"It's Light to you, Ember." The dusty brown she-cat snarled. She cuffed Ember around ears roughly. Light growled again and lead her away. She could barely think straight as Jag, and then Holly came up to Light to calm her down. She barely even think because of her fury. She had almost gotten to really meet the stranger. He had seemed very familiar.
Later that day, the rain had slowed and Light was taking her, Jag, and the Growler to take some more 'prisoners.' Light was very serious when it came to trespassers on her territory. Ember stumbled along as they headed out towards the stream at the edge of their land. Ember bit her tongue to stop herself from telling Light to mark her territory so less trespassers would come strolling through. She knew that the Clans lived near their home, so most of the stray cats were from the Clans. She thought that the handsome, dark gray one that had just stumbled in was most likely from RiverClan.
Ember hated going on patrol with Light. Patrol really meant scaring off rogues, loners, and Clan warriors. She was sick of having Light tell her her name wasn't Light Feather, it was Light. And her own name wasn't Ember Sparks, it was Ember. Ember personally agreed with Light on that one, but it was annoying that Light though that she wanted to be called Ember Sparks. She had come to the Descendants shortly after the incident with Lucky. She stopped mid-step. Realization dawned on her. That stranger, that handsome, dark gray newcomer, had been her kithood crush, River. River was now a warrior from RiverClan. She longed to go running back and start fresh, let River know that she wasn't some hostile rogue like Light. She wanted him to know that it was her, his friend from when they were two moons old.
Fury boiled up inside of her once again. Fury at Light, for making her seem like a horrible rogue. Fury at Tad, for not letting her be closer to River. Fury at River, for not recognizing her sooner. Fury at herself for not realizing it was him. She marched on as the sun set on her anger, deep in her belly. She could barely contain her anger. She wanted to sink her claws into Light, and then Tad, but she knew she must be good. She almost spat her answer as Jag asked her if she was okay.
"I'm fine." She choked out. "Really, I'm fine." She knew she was trying to convince herself as much as she was Jag. I'm fine. I'll leave this place. I'll find River and I'll stay with him. I don't have to be angry anymore. I'll start fresh, I'll start anew without Light or Tad. It will be just me and River. She closed her eyes. I'm sorry, Mama. I promised you I'd never be like Papa, but I am. I'm so sorry.
