"HUH?" MY dumb self asked.
"I want you to come to the party. You're coming right?" he said slowly, perhaps waiting for his words to sink in.
It was really getting cold here. I pulled my hoodie tighter to my body.
"I'm not sure about that. And why do you want me to come? Watching the game isn't enough? Kian, I honestly don't know what you're playing at." My voice laced with irritation rose higher, attracting people's attention. Not only was I invited to a boring game, and now a party. What was going on here?
Kian noticed and led me to the empty seats higher up the bleachers. We sat down. Darkness was fast approaching and I could see people moving away. At that moment I wanted to be in their shoes.
"No offense but you don't go out much, that I'm aware of. You also have no friends at all, so you don't get to be invited to parties and I'm also responsible for that," he pointed out. Like I needed someone to point out what I already knew.
"Wait a minute. . ." Right now I was pissed off. Who the hell was he to tell me what to do? Yes, I didn't get to go to parties but what if I liked it that way? And it wasn't any of his business in the first place.
He continued, "So I'm trying to make it up to you for all the fun you've missed out on over the years."
Placing his hands on my shoulder he came closer, that woodsy scent of his with a tinge of rosewood enveloping me. It was overwhelming so I held my breath and shifted backwards. Why was he being so touchy? Hadn't he the other day said that he might contract a disease from me? Besides, it's not as if him placing those hands on me will make me decide.
"Hands off please and stop coming closer. Thank you," I stated. Well if Kian said he's changed now---which I doubted---then I can too by speaking my mind nicely. And seriously dude, you can't just put your hands on my body anytime you feel like.
"Sorry, I'm probably stinking like a wet dog." He dropped his hands and moved away. Good.
"I really want you to come. Just say you'll be there. Please?" He faced me. In the receding light, I couldn't make out his face so I didn't know whether he actually wanted me to come to this party.
"I don't know." I closed my eyes and breathed the night air deeply, enjoying the rush of fresh air into my lungs. I didn't want to go because I refused to believe he had changed just like that.
Olay just accept. The guy's trying you have to admit, first the game and now to a party. He must be changing. After all you said you're not a chicken right? Show me! And this, my friends, is how peer pressure began or in this case, mind pressure. It's official now, I hate my mind.
Someone called out, "Heyy Kian! Who the fuck are you necking with up there? Forget that bimbo and come down. The party's in 20 minutes."
My eyes went wide open. Me, a bimbo? And necking? With Kian of all people? Eww no. Man, that person needs to get his eyes checked but then with no light and the way we were sitting must have made it seem like we were doing something.
"Fucking shut up Noah. We're not necking, I'm just talking to her and for the record she's not a bimbo. Chill, I'm coming!" he shouted back at Noah. How did he know it was Noah by the way? Oh yeah, his voice.
"Whatever you say bro, I'm here to remind you to be fast. We're all waiting." With that, Noah's footsteps faded away.
Kian emitted a long deep breath. "Sorry about that. So are you coming or not to Noah's party?"
Ahh, Noah and that reminded me. What would his friends say about me coming to the party? Their answer would be no.
"If you really want me to come, how about your friends? They don't like me, you know."
He must have waved a hand, I wasn't sure. It was getting really dark. "Forget about them. I invited you to the party and none of them will say or do otherwise. I gotta run, have to bathe and change." He stood up.
Hmm, okay then, if he said so. I looked up at him. There was one more thing on my mind. "I don't know if I can come yet. I need to ask my parents for their consent."
Kian mumbled something that I didn't get under his breath. "Just call your parents. If they say yes, great and I'll take you with me to the party. If it's a no, then no problem. You wait here for me. I'll drop you off telling them why you came late since I'm the reason. I'll be coming back in like 10 minutes." He didn't wait for my response and left me sitting down alone on the bleachers.
I stared at the darkness. He must be really changing, look how he offered to take me home. Very nice of him, I guess.
You know Olay you can just step down now and go back home, the good part of my mind whispered.
No, don't you dare chicken out! Enjoy the first party of your life with a very hot boy inviting you. Honey don't be so boring, the bad side whispered back.
I didn't know when I picked my phone up and dialed dad's number. The bad part of my mind had to be pushing me to do this but the good side prompted me to call Dad, hoping he'll not allow.
"Hello Olay. Isn't the game finished already? Your mom and I are worried." His voice had a stressed tone attached to it.
Great. My chit chat with Kian here had made them bothered about me.
"Sorry for making you so worried, Dad. The game's ended already and Penfield High won. I was on my way home until a friend invited me over to a party. I wasn't sure but I need your permission to go," I said, crossing my fingers. Yes, this is it, I'm not going.
Dad exhaled heavily. "Really? I can't believe my girl's going to a party. Sure, hon, you can."
"Okay, thanks Dad," I said, while inwards, the good part of my mind cried, Noo.
Yes, told ya I was gonna win, the bad side whispered.
Just great. I had two minds now, the good and bad. And they were fighting each other.
You're definitely weirder than weird, a third tiny voice put in. Wait, what was actually going on in there? I tuned out those tiny voices and listened to what Dad was saying.
"Just watch out for yourself honey. Don't drink or smoke. Be careful and it's 10 on the dot for you to be at home." Yeah, I know all that. I didn't read books for nothing.
"Wait, who's bringing you back home? There's no way you're coming back all by yourself." he queried.
"My friend offered to bring me home," I replied.
'Okay then. Have fun honey." He clicked his phone off. Just like that? Something must be wrong with my parents too. It seemed like the whole world was wrong today and I was the only one right.
Well, it was settled then. I was going to the darn party. It had better be worth it.
I twiddled with my fingers and waited for Kian.
What if he was joking and ran out on you? Maybe this is another prank. Boys like Kian can do anything, you know. My wandering thoughts were cut short when I heard Kian call my name.
Feeling my way down, I reached his position and that was when the field lights flickered on.
My breath hitched.
Clad in a black leather jacket that partly showed the white tee he had on, his messy-but-perfect hair, clean-shaven jaw and glittering ear piercing, Kian defined the ultimate meaning of bad boys round the world. He practically oozed, I'm so fucking hot.
Snap out of it Olay. He's not the first handsome boy you're seeing, I told myself.
But he's the first handsome boy you're talking to, am I right or am I right? bad mind snickered. Ughh, get outta my head already.
"Uhm, my dad agreed so I guess I'll be going with you," I said, shrugging like I didn't give a darn.
He smiled. "Great. Come on, let's get going." He began walking forward while I followed behind, dragging my legs. They and other parts of my body weren't jumping over the moon to go to this party that Kian was raving about.
You forgot that I've jumped over the moon a long time, bad mind sniggered. Arrghhh.
On getting to where his car was parked, I saw no one.
"Where's everyone?" I asked as he pressed the key towards the car. It beeped. His car was a black Audi. Yeah, he had parents who were really wealthy although I wondered why his mother worked as a Principal if she had this much money to buy her son an Audi. Well, none of my business.
He came over to the other side of the car I was and opened the passenger door, gesturing for me to enter. So Kian could be such a gentleman. "Off you go and they're already at the party."
"Oh okay, thank you."
The old Kian I knew never invited me to parties or games, neither did he drive nor open car doors for me, but considering what he had been doing for the past few days, it was possible he was no longer that bully I used to know.
But people don't just change like that, a voice deep within me argued. I didn't listen.
I slid into a comfy ash seat, still surprised he was being good to me. This was a real life scenario of someone turning a new leaf, all of a sudden.
Kian also slid into the driver seat, made the window slide open and drove out of the school premises.
I don't know what I expected to see in here, maybe cigarette stubs, wrappers and all that sort of random things but there was no clutter at all. The interior of the car looked neat and a trace of rosewood, just like the scent Kian had, lingered in the air.
I watched Kian. The wind was blowing his hair, scattering the strands and adding to his already screaming gorgeousness.
A scrunch twisted my nose. What was wrong with me today? When did I notice that Kian was a hot guy?
I continued pinning him a look as he drove and realized there was nothing I actually knew about him. Suddenly he turned to me. I whipped my head around quickly and started humming. I can't be caught staring.
He chuckled. "I know I'm handsome, you don't have to stare."
Cocky much? I paused the song I was humming under my breath. "Please, I wasn't staring, I was just looking at the way you were driving."
Lame, Olay, so lame. I'm disappointed in you, bad mind whispered. Shut it!
Chortling, he said, "Okay then, if you say so. We're almost there." And faced back to his driving while I still hummed, feeling mortified.
We reached Noah's house. From what I could see, it was more like a mansion. Two storeys high and painted white with thorny vines creeping all over the walls. There was a big fountain of water sprouting from a dolphin's mouth in the middle of the driveway.
Man, I'm cruising with rich people today and not just your normal ones, but rich people who have made my life hell.
"Wait, don't go out yet."
What now? Jogging over he opened the car door and held out his palm for me to grab onto. I ignored his ever-so-kind gesture and came out myself. After all, I was more than capable of doing that.
Burn, good mind snickered. I rolled my eyes inside.
Smiling, Kian acted as if I hadn't just rejected his kind offer and led me into the gigantic house.
"Time to party." He winked at me as we were about to enter.
Hurray, bad mind whooped.
Not, good mind screamed. I agreed. Not.
