Yeah, it's a thing.

Wattpad users actually recruit other Wattpad users to be part of their family. When I say family, I don't mean it as a group of close friends that you consider your family.

This Wattpad family consists of a mother, father, brother, sister, or any mix of those four.

You'll see it in their bio as so:

Family
Mother: @...
Father: @...
Brother: @...

Okay, but why?

I wish I could answer that, I really do, because I find it to be pretty strange. If you develop close friendships with people here on Wattpad (remember Internet safety... gosh, I'm such a mom... no pun intended), then I would recommend creating a friend group, not a family.
