@laughterandjynx

laughterandjynx is a brilliant writer on Wattpad who has written books like the very popular 'The Last Virgin Standing' which has 54 million reads (and is one of my personal favourite reads on Wattpad, it is such a good read!) and 'Jangles' which has 252k reads. It was amazing to interview her and here is what she had to say!

Why did you start writing on Wattpad?

Like most people, I joined Wattpad as a reader. A couple of months later, my family took a trip to Vietnam, where I had spotty Internet access and a lot of time on my hands. For as long as I can remember, I would always start a story (fantasy, of course) and only write a couple pages, which was a lot at the time. Reading completed teen-fiction romances inspired me to write one of my own. I finished Jangles in a summer, which is probably the fastest I've ever written a book (except for Candy Floss, which I wrote during NaNoWriMo).

What's the best part about writing on Wattpad?

My readers! I'm convinced I have the funniest, sassiest readers on all of Wattpad. I read their comments, and I just remember all the great things about my stories. (I tend to have a low opinion of them.) It's also been great having a community of writers to talk to. I can't find the type of writers I click with in my everyday life, so Wattpad's been a great resource.

What's been your proudest moment on Wattpad?

There have been so many! I think it changes as time goes on. When I first started writing The Last Virgin Standing, I was so proud to have 500 reads and six fans (still sad they changed it to followers). In 2013, Wattpad sent out little widgets and awards for Top (Hot?) Authors and Top Book, and I received both for my success with The Last Virgin Standing. Now, I think I'm most proud of the fact that I've attracted multiple offers from different publishers and agents. That was a game changer for me and made writing more than just a hobby.

Which book has been the most fun to write?

Ooh, this is a tricky one. Jangles was the least stressful to write as there was nobody to impress back then, but I love my characters in The Last Virgin Standing. But overall, I'd have to say The Walt Way, one of my short stories. It's just full of crazy antics but still cute.

Who has been your favourite character to write?

Ian Jameson from The Last Virgin Standing. No contest.

What's the hardest part about writing on Wattpad?

These days I don't write much on Wattpad. I've just lost time and motivation. My readers don't pressure me to update, but I still feel that whenever I post a new story. I've never been good at following a consistent schedule, and I owe that to my readers.

And finally, what advice would you give to a new writer on Wattpad?

Write what you want to read. At the end of the day, you're writing this for you. If you're not enjoying it, then why are you writing it?Be proud of your work, but also know there's always room for improvement. Those are just general writing tips, but specifically for Wattpad, don't feel discouraged by the number of reads/votes/comments you get. That number can only rise. Honestly, I've stopped paying attention to the numbers. Focus on your story. Readers will come. Also, it's okay to take breaks! If you're not feeling it, you can always pause and take a break from it. I know so many people who just stop writing and never resume. It's okay to scrap, but once you're over halfway done, you've got a good thing there.
