@evethespy
evethespy is an amazing account on Wattpad, and had written books such as 'Waffle Cones' which has 1 million reads, and they have over 8k followers! It was amazing to interview them, and here is what they had to say!
Why did you start writing on Wattpad?
If it were true, I would describe the immense joy I take from crafting universes straight from my imagination and claim that as the reason. Alas, it didn't happen like that. The realistic answer in my case would be mild peer pressure and social exclusion. At the age of fourteen, my friends began posting stories on a platform named Quotev. Since they spent a vast majority of their time chatting to Internet friends and complaining about how much effort it took to update regularly, my feeling of exclusion increased.
Now, I've had a Wattpad account since 2012, but I didn't do much on it except read stories. Plus, I was under a bland username with a default profile picture. In February 2015, I revamped my profile and decided to give writing a shot, throwing caution to the wind and posting a story called Chalky Hearts. Though painfully undiscovered, that story was the origin of evethespy.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
As someone who's had chronic writer's block for over a year now, this question makes me fumble. Honestly, it always changes. The inspiration for Chalky Hearts came from Valentine's Day. My dialogue stories were inspired by other dialogue stories. The inspiration for Waffle Cones came from when I wandered past a newly opened frozen yoghurt store. Eye Drops came from my atrocious eyesight and frequent visits to the optometrist. Snow Boots was inspired by Christmas. I often tend to base my stories either on festivities or adolescent struggles, such as dealing with social pressures and personal identity. Especially with dialogue chapters, I tend to find inspiration from films, shows, quotes, and exceptionally lame pick up lines. Reading other stories can be very effective. Also, going outside and observing human behaviour. There are so many quality ideas I've picked up from a stroll.
What's the best part about writing on Wattpad?
My darling readers, of course! Since Wattpad has so many users, there's a high chance your work may catch the eye of an eager reader. I receive such heartwarming comments on a daily basis, ones which I could only dream to hear in person. My spies constantly motivate me to keep writing and entertain me with their hilarious comments. Plus, Wattpad is a platform where I can go nuts with my ridiculous sense of humour. If I say any of my story dialogue out loud, I'd certainly raise a few eyebrows.
Also, I've recently discovered that the amount of time I spend writing has also contributed massively to my English grades. I'm one of the top English students in my year now, so that's neat.
Are you planning on writing any more books in the future?
Geez, this is difficult to answer. I'm near the end of Snow Boots at the moment, whilst being weighed down by a 20-page biology report due next week. I have no intention of writing any more dialogue stories, though that may change in the future. I have six stories in my drafts at the moment. Four were previously posted. I unpublished those due to writer's block and lack of time to write. Two of those four were halfway finished and the other two only had four or five chapters posted. Sparkler Snapshots and Begging To Differ are my two priority stories. The Chalky Hearts rewrite and Retail Girl are further down the list. It's unlikely that I'll post anything entirely new this year, but situations may change. Anything can happen. I try and be as flexible as I can.
Then again, I'm in my senior year of high school, am applying to universities at the moment, have a bunch of difficult exams to study for, am doing five scholarship exams with extra tutorials on top of that, hoping to be a part of four student councils, am a school librarian and a part of the debate team, and may sign up for badminton later this year. So realistically speaking, I may not even pick up my stories until the end of 2017. I'm certainly not abandoning Wattpad though, that's out of the question.
How did it feel to hit 1 million reads for the first time?
This may sound strange, but I didn't feel anything. Most likely because the numbers were going up at a steady rate. I even managed to predict the day Waffle Cones hit 1M. Even so, I was ecstatic to have reached such a huge milestone. From day one of writing on Wattpad, one million reads had always been my ultimate goal. Now I'm just wandering around like a headless chicken, wondering where I should head next!
What's the hardest part about writing on Wattpad?
Writer's block, for sure. It's particularly stressful as a Wattpad writer. A downside of posting on here is that we're expected to constantly maintain regular updates. I wish more people would understand that writing is not our job. We're not paid for it – not unless you're published or were lucky enough be invited to Radish Fiction. We attend school and have homework and jobs and family obligations. We cram for exams and have chores and writer's block and need breaks. We're human, so please treat us like one.
Ah geez, I'm sorry for turning a simple question into a rant. Also, to those who are understanding and patient with me, thank you so much! I love you to the moon and back <3
And finally, what advice would you give to a new writer on Wattpad?
Have fun with it! Write for yourself, not just for your readers. Don't expect instant popularity. Patience is rewarded. It took me two years to get where I am today. One of those two was spent trying to hit the fifty follower mark. Make sure to check whether a user accepts reading requests before asking them to read your story. Edit your work. Proofread. Reply to comments. Thank people for reading your story. Be friends and interact with them. Be kind. Don't give in to the hate. Don't feed the trolls. Clichés are not taboo. Stand out. Don't fret about your writing technique. Use a thesaurus. Celebrate both huge and tiny milestones. Write from your soul. You can do it. I believe in you. Good luck.
