CANDLES
Lyrics:
In the cold air
The time we just looked at each other
With the days I'm missing
I feel like the door will be open
I feel like someone will come
After a long long darkness
The white winter is back
I want to tell you everything without forgetting
Today I desperately wished for
After so many nights, the long-awaited Christmas
Without missing a single day
Even the frozen time, to melt it away
I'll become a bright candle to light you up
In your eyes as you look at me
The way I look
Even with your small breath
How much it sways
In this deep night
Tonight I--
I meet you in your warm arms
Without you my night
Wouldn't be bright as tonight
Cause you are the light
That shines on my white
Breaking the long long silence
Calming the excited feelings
I want to tell you everything without forgetting
My feelings I desperately desired
After so many nights, the long-awaited Christmas
Without missing a single day
Even the frozen time, to melt it away
I'll become a bright candle to light you up
Beyond the memories one by one vividly
After the seasons, it scatters as white as snow
The days in the shade, I'll light them up with a bright light
I'll be the warmth the warmest than anyone
The long-awaited Christmas
Without missing a single day
Even the frozen time, to melt it away
I'll become a bright candle to light you up

Summary:
A K-Pop Christmas Surprise!
The Boyz are finally putting on a concert for Deobis in-person! After a painful long two-years apart, it's an event that all of the members have looked forward to, especially Ju Haknyeon. This one is super special for him too, because there is going to be one Deobi who is attending for the first time. He wants to make her feel welcome, special and give the best performance that he can.
Evalyn, a native of America, is in Korea for a vacation with her partner-in-crime, Sheree. They have gotten tickets for their first ever live K-Pop concert. After PM-ing back and forth via the Universe App, she reveals to her Bias, Haknyeon, that she is coming to The Boyz Fan Zone Concert.

Evalyn's POV
The familiar chime of the coffee pot sounds through the hotel room. I dash out from my bedroom and skid into the kitchen nook area to grab the fresh pot. After making up my coffee, pouring some International Delight Irish Cream creamer into a mug, I walk over to sit on the couch and look out the window.
Outside, snowflakes are falling. It's a huge contrast to the up and down weather temperature that I get in Florida. I mean, there's no snowfall in the state that is lined by ocean and beaches.
I heave a sigh, thinking to myself, I still can't believe that I'm here in South Korea!
My partner-in-crime (or roommate) and I decided a few months ago to travel to Seoul for our work vacation destination. A week in the grand city was just what we needed. We decided to book this week, because we also planned on going to the much-anticipated live concert event from the K-Pop group, The Boyz.
I discovered my love of K-Pop through the rapidly-popular Bangtan Boys or Bangtan Sonyeondan group. My roommate and I would always watch the Rockin' New Years' broadcast with the Ball Drop for New Years and BTS happened to be one of the groups to perform. "Dynamite" was my first song I listened to, but they performed "DNA" and this was my true first song that I fell in love with.
Since then, however, I've explored other groups and through Mnet's Kingdom, discovered KQ's ATEEZ and Cre.ker's The Boyz. Coming out of Kingdom, I began to follow them and a little song called "Drink It" hooked me. A certain Jeju-native stood out to me amongst the other group members.
I smile, thinking about the journey as my eyes follow the flakes drifting gradually down from the gray sky outside.
A sudden buzz from my phone draws my attention away from the snowflakes and my thoughts. I set my coffee down and snatch up my shiny, purple Samsung Galaxy phone, eyeing the double photocards of the Jeju-native in the case.
I tap on the screen and see a notification icon at the top from Universe. I drag the top down to see it is for a private message (or PM).
"Haknyeon-ah, are you awake already?" I mutter, tapping on the notification to bring up the private message box with his text.
"It's time already! I can't believe it's here! Finally get to see Deobis again!" I read the text from the Jeju-native and can't help but smile.
Is there anyone who is more excited to see the fans?
I shoot a glance out the window to see a giant snowflake in the shape of a heart fall super close to the glass.
In roughly seven hours, at the Seoul SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium, The Boyz Fan Con: The B-Zone would occur for Day 1. It is the grand return of The Boyz to a stage to perform in front of their fans, known around K-Pop as "The B," or, as it is pronounced in Korean, "Deobi." The event is supposed to run for three days straight, including an intimate fan-signing event afterward.
My phone buzzes in my hand again.
I look at the new text from him: "Eva, will you be watching? I will be upset if you are not."
I chuckle. I quickly type a response back to him: "No worries. I'll be there. I wouldn't miss it for the world."
I remember first signing up to get the PM feature on Universe and how Haknyeon and I first began to chat back and forth. He was dazzled by the fact that I was planning to come on a vacation to South Korea in December.
Haknyeon's POV
I couldn't be more excited! Not only is tonight the first live concert in two years for our precious Deobis, but one of my newest "Jusadans" is attending! Jusadan, in Korean, means people who love me and I thought it was the perfect name for my own fans. Plus, being from Jeju Island, I never thought I'd be a part of something so special like this, let alone have a devoted cluster of "Jusadans" behind me!
I glance up from my phone, seeing Lee Sangyeon standing in front of me. His dark eyebrows are knit together, his dark brown eyes full of frustration and fury and his hands are on his hips.
"Can I help you, Hyung?" I question, cocking an eyebrow in curiosity as I receive the reply message from my Universe PM.
"Are you going to practice for tonight or just sit there and fiddle around on the phone?" Sangyeon scolds.
I chuckle and lean back. "You always worry so much, Hyung, things are going to be fine!"
Sangyeon lifts a hand up, with a sigh and runs his hand through his auburn-brown hair. "You're right..." He walks over and sits down next to me. "Maybe a nice little break is good for me."
"HYUNG! HYUNG! HYUNG!" a loud, high-pitched voice splits through the air.
Sangyeon's head falls back and he groans as a young man with brown hair and blond highlights skids into the room where the two are. I pat the leader on the thigh and get up to my feet.
"Or not...not with Eric around," I say.
Sangyeon groans again.
"HYUNG! Q'S BITING PEOPLE AGAIN!" Eric Sohn says, his eyes wide open as he looks from me to Sangyeon.
"So, tell him to stop," Sangyeon grumbles. "You all are big boys. Or get Jacob to get him under control...or Juyeon."
Eric throws his arms down to his sides. "He won't listen!"
"Are you telling on me, Maknae?" Ji Changmin's voice growls as he struts into the room. His eyes are glittering with a menace. "I'll bite you for that."
Eric turns to the side and exaggeratingly gestures at Q. "SEE?"
"COME HERE!" Q growls.
Eric screams and takes off running with Q close behind him.
Sangyeon looks at me. "Every practice. Every. damn. practice." He sighs again and closes his eyes. "It's a good thing I love you all most of the time."
I smirk. "Why most of the time, Hyung? I think out of all of them, I'm your favorite."
Sangyeon's head and eyes loll to one side and he blinks open his eyes. "You're cute and funny. My favorite is actually probably Younghoon."
Kim Younghoon, with long light pink hair, pokes his head around the corner. "I am? Yay!"
I lift my phone up and type a reply: "So, I'll see you in seven-ish hours! We have lots of amazing songs planned!"
Sangyeon looks at me. "Which Jusadan are you talking to?"
"The pretty new one, who works with horses," I respond to him. "Maybe when we get some downtime, I'll sign up to have her teach me. I haven't ridden in months, you know." I smile at him. "It'd be cool for the Deobi."
"Oh, the one who's roommates with my newest mango?" Sangyeon smirks at me.
Evalyn's POV
Seven hours came and passed quickly. Given how cold it is, I've decided to throw on a matching hoodie to my bias-merch shirt. Both are black with "JuHaknyeon" (name) and "09" (his number) on the back. I'm also wearing five bracelets on my wrist: one is a neon green Jimin band for my first original K-Pop bias, the second is a The Boyz bracelet based off the one that the members all wear, a third is a plan black band, the fourth is for Jongho, my ATEEZ bias and the fifth and final one is for Haknyeon (more on these later).
Sheree stands at the door in similar attire, only in her bias, Sangyeon's gear. "Ready to go?"
"Ready as always! I can't believe this! Tonight I'm going to meet Ju Freaking Haknyeon face-to-face!"
"Yeah," Sheree sighs, "I've heard people say Sangyeon smells like baby powder. Has something so simple ever smelled so sweet?"
I look at her with unamusement. "Just don't go near Eric, since they say he smells like vanilla."
"I'll make sure not to do that! Now let's get going!" Sheree remarks and shoves the door handle downward, yanking it open in one quick and eager move. "Sangyeon's beautiful voice is going to ring in my ears LIVE!!"
I chuckle and pat my phone as we walk along the corridor to the elevators. "Haknyeon's smile will light up my life like a candle."
"Oh, speaking of a candle, we have the new song coming out to hear live too!! I cannot freaking wait!"
I sigh. "Yeah, my poor Hakkie probably won't get many parts in it again."
Sheree smacks my arm. "Hey, don't think like that! And if he does, just look at his handsome face and think about his one line that he sings."
"IMAGINE IF WE GET DRINK IT PERFORMED TONIGHT!" I suddenly blurt out, wanting to change the subject.
"You and Drink It..." Sheree playfully groans with a toss of her eyes.
"You and Sangyeon..." I retort as we reach the elevators and press the 'down arrow' button.
"One thing is for sure, we'll get Maverick and Thrill Ride," Sheree says as the elevator chimes and the doors open up. "And I know they confirmed that they are doing a performance of Kingdom Come."
"And a bunch other amazing performances, I'm sure. They could do literally anything and everything from their song list and I'd be okay with it," I remark. "Especially Reveal, Right Here, Drink It, 4EVER, Back All Black, Bloom Bloom, Checkmate, Christmassy! (since it's close to Christmas), Dancing Till We Drop, Break Your Rules, D.D.D, L.O.U, Make or Break, No Air, Only One, Out of Control, Russian Roulette, Scar, The Stealer or Wings."
"I doubt they'll do all those. Wings would make me happy though."
The doors close and the elevator begins to descend down to the lobby with them.
Haknyeon's POV
"SHOW TIME, BOYZ! FIGHTING!" Kevin Moon shouts out. He is standing with Eric Sohn and Jacob Bae. Beside them, Ji Changmin and Kim Sunwoo are stretching and warming up their vocal cords.
I smile as Lee Sangyeon jumps up from his chair, where he has been getting his makeup and hair perfected by stylists.
"FIGHTING!" Lee Juyeon tacks on. He is making the rounds, pepping everyone up and making sure everyone is ready to go.
I watch as he makes his way to the last person, Choi Chanhee, who is holding a mirror and checking himself out. New flicks his hand at Juyeon, but peeks over his mirror toward where Kim Younghoon is fixing his clothes.
Younghoon finishes up and races over to join Juyeon and Lee Hyunjae. The fans have nicknamed the trio the "Bermuda Line," because, just like the infamous Bermuda Triangle, fans claim that anyone will be "lost" once he or she comes in close contact with the "drop-dead gorgeous" Younghoon-Hyunjae-Juyeon circle.
"PLACES!" Jacob Bae's voice rings out next. "I can hear the music that's notifying The B that the show is about to begin! Let's show them real super villains with a knockout performance of Maverick!"
A chorus of cries echo him.
I get set in my spot, crack my neck and watch as the screens part before me, opening up to a roar of applause. I'm a little disappointed that screaming isn't allowed, as it usually fuels us and shows how much our Deobi appreciate and love us. We can generally tap into ourselves and bring out more for them, but the applause is defining and welcoming. I struggle not to smile at the sound.
The concert is beginning!
I strut forward, to the rush of noise and get in my spot as an introduction video plays. Then, the familiar harsh instrumentals of our newest song echoes around the venue and I tap into my character for the song immediately.
Before long, we've powered through performances of Maverick, Shine Shine, The Stealer and have reached the highly anticipated Kingdom Come. For Kingdom Come, I was hurt and had to sit out of the performance that ultimately handed us a second place overall win in Mnet's grand competition show-spectacle Kingdom.
It's time to surprise the Jusadans, as I walk out on stage, singing along to my part and join in the tense choreography. If the crowd could, the screams would crescendo, but the applause does the trick.
As Kingdom Come ends, we step up as an eleven-member unit to greet the fans and run through introductions like old times. Like Deobis don't know us!? (Well...except the baby Deobis.) I face the crowd, smiling and trying not to be too obvious that I'm looking for my new Jusadan amongst the sea of fans.
She's here! She's got to be! She said so!
"Hi, I'm Lee Juyeon, you ready for tonight Deobi?" Juyeon greets, drawing my attention back to the concert at hand.
Applause replies to him and a few enthusiastic "yes" responses.
I chuckle and lift my mic up to my mouth. "Hi Deobi! I'm Ju Haknyeon! Are we all ready to have some fun tonight?!"
More applause and cheers and one loud vocal "FIGHTING!" from a female.
Is that her?
I look to Q, who is standing on the other side of me. We finish off our introductions and pep the crowd up as we get set for the next cluster of songs. We perform Merry Bad Ending, Whiplash, Dancing Till We Drop, Break Your Rules and then play a little "vs" game. I'm so distracted by my thoughts, that I don't really care that my team is losing to the other. I need to find her and make sure she's here.
It's important!
I look out at the crowd again, narrowing in on a small group of girls as the game comes to a close.
As Sangyeon takes over to transition from the game to our next song, my eyes finally find a young redhead sitting in the center of a group of people with a brunette at her side. They are sitting close to one of the platform walkways.
Perfect! She's here!
I can't help but smile. It is important, because, in order for me to show the emotions I need to in our new song, I need someone -- a Jusadan Deobi -- to sing to. My plan, since PM-ing her and finding out she was coming tonight, was for her to be my muse.
Everyone takes their spots for Candles, our newest seasonal song and the instrumentals begin immediately.
Hyunjae opens with:
"In the cold air
The time we just looked at each other."
Younghoon closes his eyes and sings: "With the days I'm missing."
Kevin then sings:
"I feel like the door will be open
I feel like someone will come."
I look in the direction of my fangirl and her eyes lock on mine as the song returns to Younghoon, who sings:
"After a long long darkness
The white winter is back."
Jacob grips his microphone, singing:
"I want to tell you everything without forgetting
Today I desperately wished for."
The red-haired girl, I only know as Evalyn realizes that I am staring at her and she taps the brunette to her side. I can see her mouthing something to her and then both of them are looking at me--
As I sing out:
"After so many nights, the long-awaited Christmas
Without missing a single day."
I smile and she sinks back in her seat, grinning. Do you feel special? You should. I want all my Jusadans to feel this way.
New picks up the song, singing:
"Even the frozen time, to melt it away
I'll become a bright candle to light you up."
Sunwoo and Eric team up to lyrically rap out the next part of the song:
"In your eyes as you look at me
The way I look
Even with your small breath
How much it sways
In this deep night
Tonight I--
I meet you in your warm arms
Without you my night
Wouldn't be bright as tonight
Cause you are the light
That shines on my white."
Sangyeon sings next:
"Breaking the long long silence
Calming the excited feelings."
My eyes are on the redhead, but I can see the brunette acting strangely and I can't help but cast a glance sideways to look at the leader, who is gesturing in her direction as he sings the line.
Q picks up the song after Sangyeon, singing:
"I want to tell you everything without forgetting
My feelings I desperately desired."
I turn back, smiling and we all sing out: "After so many nights, the long-awaited Christmas."
Juyeon sings the one line I had earlier: "Without missing a single day."
Then Sangyeon, gesturing and smiling, sings:
"Even the frozen time, to melt it away
I'll become a bright candle to light you up."
Kevin sings the next two lines:
"Beyond the memories one by one vividly
After the seasons, it scatters as white as snow."
New sings:
"The days in the shade, I'll light them up with a bright light
I'll be the warmth the warmest than anyone."
We all join together one last time to sing: "The long-awaited Christmas."
Younghoon sings: "Without missing a single day."
Hyunjae finishes with a beautifully sung:
"Even the frozen time, to melt it away
I'll become a bright candle to light you up."
Applause splits through the air as we all launch into the next song, another slow and melodic song, Melting Heart.
I think I've made my new Jusadan's night, for sure. It's a breeze through another game, Hypnotized, Reveal, Boy, No Air, Thrill Ride, a brief chat and farewell speech, Daydream, D.D.D, Christmassy! And then our encore song of the night: Bet On You (we also plan on doing Giddy Up and Bloom Bloom).
Before long, the concert has ended and it is time to head to a short, small fan-signing.
