018. those in pain.
⸻ HE WALKS OUT TO LEAVE HIS SISTERS HOME, completely exhausted from the hours of babysitting he had absolutely dreaded (due to takeru throwing a tantrum and avoiding him because of both of them having silly crushes on [name]).
oikawa rolled his shoulders back, letting out a soft groan as his hand moves to his shoulder and his neck cracks to the side- the tense feelings he had slowly fading away, thankfully.
his bike is propped against his tadame's fence and when he walks towards it, a loud slam interrupts him and makes him jump and spin around.
the front door to oikawa's sisters home is shut, no sign of any entrance or exit other than his own which makes him lift an eyebrow until he hears the hurried footsteps from in front of him that once again makes him snap towards it.
confusion washed over the setter, eyebrows lifted as he peaks from the side of the fence to get a look at who was walking past.
all he could notice from the dim streetlights that lit up the dark alleyway was a girl with her hands wrapped against each, opposite arm as she walks down the alleyway street and approaches the two-way streets.
oikawa quickly got onto his bike, interest peaking as he wondered if it was who he thought it was. the only person who lived nearby his sister to cause a loud bang so nearby and to be out late at night.
his brown eyes shut, quickly praying that he was correct as his feet peddled the direction the girl had gone when she turned and went onto the pavement.
"[name]?" he called out, slowing down the speed once her head turns and the tears that were falling down her face were illuminated by the glowing street lamps and traffic lights that were currently red.
oikawa stopped, staring at her the vulnerable form he had only seen once before by accident. his heart grew heavy as he stared, watching as her wrist snapped to her face and wiped away the teardrops with a sniffle.
"h-hey, oikawa," her words were occupied by a forced smile that slowly cracked. he noticed the way her lips twitched and how badly she wanted to crumble, but for the sake of her image- she would try her best not to.
oikawa wasn't sure what to do, watching as [name] disconnected the eye contact so that her gaze was fixed towards the wheel of his bicycle as if she was ashamed. his hands gripped his handles, looking around their surroundings and biting the inside of his lip.
he inhaled sharply, the traffic light turning yellow.
"do you wanna go for a walk?"
their walk had begun with silence. oikawa unable to bring himself to ask why the [hair color] haired teenager was crying and [name] unable to bring herself to explain to the brown-haired coach why she had left her home at around nine at night.
her hands were shoved into the pockets of her worn out hoodie, the same hoodie she had worn for the past couple of days. her beat up sneakers (that she didn't wear with socks) being dragged against the pavement and strands of her hair slowly falling out of whatever hairstyle she was attempting.
"we missed you at practice," oikawa attempted to address, leaning against his bike with his hands on the handles and walking next to it.
[name] lifted her head slightly from the ground, glancing at the male beside her from the corner of her eye and continued to walk.
she had felt guilty, she would admit. she felt guilty that she had left all of the pressure on oikawa- especially after promising that she would be there for the summer to support the small team of young volleyball players.
"y-yeah, sorry," she breathed out, "i've just been going through a lot."
oikawa didn't want to pressure her, only continuing to walk down the pavement beside her and stopping right before they stepped off onto the street.
the two looked both ways before continuing to walk.
oikawa's brown eyes were reflecting the light of the moon and his chocolate brown hair was blowing softly in the wind. he let out a soft sigh, "if you ever need to talk about it, i'm here for you."
[name] didn't respond, only nodded in hopes that oikawa had seen it (which he had not).
the two were always creating a silence when around each other. they had always found a way to end the conversation when it was only the two of them and allow the comforting quiet surround them without any complaints.
they didn't care if it was considered awkward or uncomfortable, to them it was soothing.
"h-hey oikawa," her voice was low and hesitant, "can i ask you s-something?"
oikawa turned, [name] looked down at her feet with every step she took- refusing to look up for even a second.
"of course," oikawa reassured.
[name] was reluctant, biting her bottom lip harshly. she lifted her head, watery eyes as she tried her hardest to hold back the sobs that wanted to come crashing down like a wave.
her breathing was heavy, breath hitching each time she opened her mouth to speak. her hand moving to her lips as the tears fell.
"[name]-"
"w-what-" she cut oikawa and herself off, halting in her steps, "what do you do when the p-person you loved and r-relied on for years leaves you? when the person who helped you make f-friends when you didn't have your own a-and helped you through your worst times just leaves?"
his eyes were on her as she sobbed again and all he could do was wrap his arms around her. his bike falling to his floor while he placed his large hand against her [hair color] hair, stroking it gently to calm her down.
he understood now. he understood why she was so close with his sister, why she flinched that day when he brought up the beach, why semi was the only person she would talk about to him.
oikawa held her close, looking up at the star filled sky.
