003. those with popsicles.
⸻ HER FOOT TAPPED ON THE WOODEN FLOORS OF THE GYMNASIUM SOFTLY, the same rhythmical pattern repeating as she watched the young boys practice their serving in front of their coach- who was blowing onto his whistle every couple seconds to start pairing them into groups.
she let out a soft yawn, deciding to pull her phone from her back pocket to distract the boredom that creeped up. a smile appeared onto her face at the message she noticed she had recieved only a bit ago, making her stomach flutter with butterflies.
oikawa had glanced over, noticing the smile that her phone had created- such a genuine and beautiful smile that was on her face. he brought his whistle back to his lips, blowing onto it harshly.
the boys all stopped, oikawa gesturing for them all to huddle around him. his hands found their way to his pockets. "alright kids, you guys did great today, lets keep up the good work!" he motivated, watching ad the boys cheered amongst themselves proudly.
"oh, is practice done?" [name] asked rhetorically, oikawa turning to look at the young woman who was opening up her bag and pulling out a yellow container, grinning widely at them, "i brought more watermelon!"
the boys had instantly ran towards her, surrounding the teenager as she passed our slices of watermelon to each young boy with nothing more than a smile and her hair behind her ear. after each boy had recieved their slice, they moved away and found a spot with their friends to eat their after practice snack.
oikawa smirked at his nephew who grew a bright red once [name] handed him a watermelon, patting the top of his head with a laugh, causing the young boy to run away while pulling her little brother with him.
"oikawa, i got something for you!"
oikawa's eyes widened, staring at the girl who pulled at a popsicle with a spiderman face on the packaging. he rolled his eyes as he crossed his arms, slowly approaching her. "a popsicle?" he asked in sarcastic disbelief, making her frown.
"yes, a popsicle! i wanted to get you something for all your hard work!" she cheerfully spoke, grabbing his hand and placing the cold snack in his palm with a grin, "takeru told me that you like superheroes!"
oikawa looked down, lightly mumbling 'not really', but that didn't stop a soft pink blush from appearing on his cheeks. his brown eyes stared at the package before looking up and clearing his throat. "thank you," he mumbled, unwrapping the package to a melted spiderman with gumball eyes.
[name] bursted in laughter, hands flying to her face out of embarrassment. "i-it looks just like him," she joked, making oikawa glare at her as she laughed loudly.
the [eye color] eyed young woman giggled and opened her bag, pulling out her own popsicle, this time with an alien face on the packaging.
oikawa's eyes widened, looking up at the girl who was unwrapping the popsicle that revealed an also melted green alien. he frowned softly, slightly wishing takeru would've instead told her about his love for aliens and not superheroes.
"you like aliens?"
she looked up from the melted snack that was getting all over her hands. her brow lifted and she shook her head softly, "not really, i thought it looked cool." she noticed oikawa's firm nod and she hummed in realization, "do you like aliens?"
oikawa gave a small smile, nodding once again. he turned around, sitting on the bench that was at his leg while he spoke, bringing the popsicle to his lips.
"that's cool! i wouldn't expect you to like aliens," [name] admitted, bringing her own popsicle up to her lips as they both look at the children cautiously while waiting for their parents to pick them up.
"do you like spiderman?" oikawa asked, waving his popsicle softly as he looked at her from the corner of his eyes.
she grinned instantly at his question, "i love spiderman!"
his eyes widened and he shifted his body so that he could look at her easier. "then why did you give me spiderman?" he asked, his thumb running against the popsicle stick, noticing writing on it.
"takeru told me you like superheroes and that was the last spiderman popsicle," she mumbled embarrassingly, turning towards oikawa who was quickly biting into his popsicle without any reaction towards the cold.
oikawa quickly finished his popsicle, tilting the stick to read the writing, a chuckle escaping his slightly parted lips. "okay, wait, did you hear about the actor who fell through the floorboards?"
[name] stared blankly, knowing exactly what he was doing, he was telling her those stupid popsicle stick jokes. she sighed out, running a hand through her hair, "no, i did not."
"he was just going through a stage!"
"that was stupid-"
"no it wasn't!"
