Chapter 28: Weak

Kelsey

I couldn't let my mother's words affect me too much. If I did, I would break down and it wasn't the right time to do that. I had to learn to let go of what makes me weak. My only objective was to not get killed or let anyone die. Not only the ones close to me, but anyone.

It hurt. It really did. And it hurt that I was trying to ignore it. But it was what I had to do, what I needed to do. I couldn't seem weak...

Stiles pulled me off at Liam's place, since there was where I was staying. I was waiting for Liam in his room, sitting in the edge of his bed. I had sent him a message a few minutes ago and he said he was on his way.

He broke in and I just looked at him. He's breath was accelerated and it seemed like he had been running. He studied my factions and tried to guess, but anyways he asked.

"How did it go?"

"Lydia's not getting worse." I said in a flat tone, looking at him straight in the eyes. "She's not getting better either, though."

He didn't buy it.

"What's wrong?"

"Well, it looks like I'll have to stay with you for a long time," I sighed. He waited for me to keep going and kept a straight expression. "Since my mother's just told me I'm a monster and she doesn't want to see me again."

Liam looked down as I tried to stay calmed. He felt bad for me and I didn't like it. Nobody needed to feel bad for me. He looked up again and grabbed a piece of hair I had in my face. He placed it behind my ear and cupped my cheek, caressing it.

I wanted to melt into his touch, but I didn't know if it was the best to do it. Would that make me weak? Did he make me weak? What made me weak?

I placed my hand over his and pulled it away from my face as I tried to make up my mind.

"It's fine." I ensured him. "I'm okay." I didn't need his compassion.

He didn't seem to believe me so I leaned in and placed a soft kiss on his lips. I pulled away and gave him a small smile, trying my best to make it as real as possible. He smiled, convinced, and gave me a quick kiss again. I wasn't lying, was I? This was not lying I was just hiding the truth.

Our moment was interrupting by me getting up and running towards his bathroom. I threw up everything I had eaten that day. I felt Liam pulling my hair away from my face as I continued to vomit.

"Are you sick?" Liam asked once I finished. I wiped away some tears that had formed in my eyes as coughed.

"I don't think so." I said, my throat a little sore. "I've been eating a lot of junk food lately. It is probably jus that."

Liam nodded and helped me get up. I walked into his room and sat on his bed again.

"Are you sure you're okay?" I didn't talk I just nodded. He sighed and his heartbeat started going faster. I looked at him and he understood I was confused and I wanted him to explain.

"Malia asked me a favor." He started. "She wanted me to tell Scott something for her."

"Why not her?"

"I don't know. " He sighed. "But I can't do it alone."

"Liam." I was the one who sighed this time. "You need to do this alone, you need to talk to Scott."

"He's not really talking to me." I think he forgot that I could hear him even if he mumbled. I gave in and finally agreed to help him, otherwise he would never do it.

"What did Malia ask you?"

"To tell Scott he was right about the tunnels." He said and I looked at him clueless.

"What do you mean?"

"When we were down there, when we were taken by the doctors, we didn't know it yet, but we were a lot closer than we thought." Bad memories came to my head when I remembered that night. "There's an Operating Theater down there. Down in the tunnels."

"How did she know?"

"By scent." We were not going to tell Scott yet. We needed to make sure that Malia was right.

We were going back into the tunnels.

-

The sewerage was wet, humid, dirty and basically disgusting. I didn't exactly know what we were looking for but we had been there for a long time now and there was absolutely nothing. I kept checking my phone to see if I could get any service. After checking it one last time I looked up and didn't see Liam. Just what I needed.

I walked forwards a bit faster, to see if I had just been left behind, but I still couldn't see Liam. I was about to call his name when I heard a voice.

You lost?

I think it was Scott.

Completely.

And then Liam's voice joined the conversation. I kept walking and turned the next corner to find Liam looking into a corridor, probably where Scott was.

I decided to hide and leave them alone so they could talk.

How did you know I was down here?

I followed you. Both of you.

Why are you following us?

Why are you down here?

I'm just trying to figure out if this is where they took us. Me, Kelsey and Hayden. Malia said she was down here too. That the scent was the same.

There was a pause before Liam spoke again.

She said you were right.

Scott finally talked after another moment of silence.

There's a turn you keep passing. It's easy to miss.

What? Where? We would have seen it.

How many times did you watch us pass it?

Five.

We were definitely not good at this.

Come on. Scott told Liam. Let's see if we can find it together.

Thank God we were getting help.

Come on, Kelsey. I know you're listening.

I turned the corner and let them see me. I gave them a weak smile and followed them to keep on looking.

-

"Do you feel that?" We stopped, mimicking Scott, as he looked around.

I didn't know about Liam but I did feel it. I had for the past few minutes.

"Like something's vibrating." I tried to explain. "I can't tell where it's coming from."

Liam got down and tried to sense where did it come from. I really couldn't tell, I felt it all over my body.

"It's coming from everywhere." Liam said and I sighed looking around. What were we going to do now? We were lost; trying to look for something we didn't know what it was. Why couldn't we just tell Scott directly? Maybe that way it would have been easier.

"I was just trying to do something right." Liam felt the anguish coming out of my body and I felt bad I made him feel like that.

"You do a lot right." Scott spoke before I could.

"Yeah, but I did one thing really wrong."

"Hayden's alive." He pointed at Liam's pessimism. "Everything before that doesn't matter."

"It should." I know he was definitely talking about what he did to Scott, but the way he looked at both of us made me think he hadn't still forgiven himself. "I feel like I had to do more than just say sorry."

"Actually, you still haven't done that."

"Back at my old school, at Devenford, I got into a fight with this kid." Liam started explaining. "I knocked two of his teeth out. They made me write a letter of apology. We both knew it meant nothing. We both knew that sooner or later, we're gonna get into another fight." His tone darkened. "I can't just say I'm sorry. I feel like I have to do something. Like maybe, somehow I have to save your life."

But he knew I was not going to let him do that. I would not let him risk his life to save mine. He knew he could do nothing about it and it hurt him.

"Don't worry." Scott told him in a soft tone. "I'm pretty sure you'll get a chance."

"Well, not down here." Liam said getting up and tried to change the subject. "We've been walking around for hours and all we've been able to find is some stupid snake sculpture on the wall."

I immediately looked the way he was nodding with his head and sighed when I realized it was an Ouroboros. I walked towards it and didn't answer when Liam asked.

"You think it's important?" I cleaned the dust away from the figure and trace the circle formed by snakes. I grabbed it and spun it. A low rumbling and a mechanical whirring were heard before the vibrating sensation stopped.

I looked around waiting for something but nothing happened. Scott and Liam moved behind me. They were leading towards a new door that had been opened. I followed them, not knowing what to expect behind the door.

The tension left my body when I saw Argent. But then, from the shadows, a new silhouette stepped forwards us. I was shocked when the light revealed his face.

"You didn't." Scott was as shock as I was, maybe even more.

"I had to." Argent tried to justify. Nothing justified this.

"Hello, Scott. Kelsey." With that, Gerard greeted us, but he only received a growl and glowing eyes from us.

"I haven't seen that color on you, Scott. It suits you." He told him. "I wonder who's the responsible for your eyes, Kelsey." And again nobody answered.

"Who's the old guy?" Liam asked next to me, making Gerard chuckle.

"At the moment they would call me a necessary evil. But you can call me Gerard."

"What were you thinking?" I looked at Argent. This was insane.

"That we need him."

"He's right." The bastard of Gerard talked again. "If you want to catch a werewolf like the Beast of Gevaudan, you're going to need more than one Argent."

"He knows all the stories." Again, Argent tried to justify. "All the folklore. Everything written and everything passed down."

"You sure about this?"

"Take a look." Scott followed them, but I, not so convinced, I kept the distance and walked slowly. Liam did as I and held my hand.

All my attention rested in a huge painting in a wall. By what it looked, two supernatural creatures were fighting each other and one of them was on fire.

"The one on the right is the Beast of Gevaudan." Gerard gave us explications.

"Do you know what the other one is?"

"The Hellhound. The guardian of supernatural places. They're both creatures of the night. But you may know them as ordinary people during the day. And most likely neither of them know what they are."

"What is it?" I asked once I saw Scott's face.

"We found a message in Latin; 'Damnatio Memoriae.'"

"They want it to remember itself. That might give us time." Gerard looked down.

"Time for what?" Scott asked alarmed.

"To prevent this." With that, Argent revealed the last piece of the painting by breaking down the part of the wall blocking it. Dead bodies. The Beast and the Hellhound where standing in a pile of dead bodies. I had a bad feeling about that.

"Who are they?" Liam asked after I tighten the grip on his hand.

"Us." I mumbled, not being able to look away from the painting. "It's all of us."
