Chapter 27: Knifes

Kelsey

It was just a theory but it made sense. The Dread Doctors were not killing people; they were just hiding the bodies. They were covering for it, like a parent would. They were protecting a werewolf.

The Beast.

Before the Beast, this person was a serial killer in 1598 known as the Demon Tailor. He lured children into his shop in Paris, where he would kill them and boil the flesh off their bones to eat. The courts believed the crimes so horrible; they ordered all the documents destroyed. To this day, no one knows his real name. So the Dread Doctors resurrected a killer who was so bad that he had to literally be erased from history.

A killer that became a werewolf and probably made him a better killer.

It sounded crazy, but with Corey’s information and by what we knew so far, it could actually be true. But it was just a theory.

“By order of the Sheriff, a county-wide curfew goes into effect tonight at sundown. All after-school activities are canceled until further notice. Students should go directly home at the end of the school day.”

A man’s voice talked through the school speakers as Liam and I walked down the hallway towards our next class.

“This is excessive.” I said referring myself to what we just heard before I took a bite to the sandwich I had in my hands.

“I think it’s a good idea.” Liam pointed, but right as he talked, a man with a shotgun walked past us. I rose by eyebrows at Liam since I had my mouth filled with food. Liam looked at me biting his bottom lip. “Okay, maybe thisis a little too much.” He agreed. “But I still think you should have not come, not after Theo’s threat.”

I told him about my encounter with Theo last night, while we were warning Scott about what we thought were the Doctors intentions. He insisted I should not go anywhere where Theo was.

“I don’t see it as a threat.” I repeated for what I thought it was the fourth time. “It was a warning. He will come for me and I will be ready.” I bit my sandwich again. “I’m not afraid of him.” I don’t know if he could understand me.

“You’re not afraid, but what about the others?” He stopped and I mimicked him. “I am afraid something is going to happen to you.”

“Nothing is going to happen to me.” I lied. But I didn’t know what it was going to happen. I just knew Theo wouldn’t do anything to me in school; he didn’t want it to be in a public place. “Besides, as long as I am with you, I will be safe.”

“Kelsey…”

“Trust me.” I cut him off before he could start again saying how I shouldn’t be so sure he would be able to protect me. “Just trust me in this one.”

Before Liam could reply, my phone interrupted us. I had a text from Stiles.

It’s important. Wait for me outside.

“Your teachers gave us some of the stuff you guys have been working on.” I said to Lydia as I held her hand. Stiles, behind me, was nervous while thinking on what was going on with Lydia.

Stiles had brought me to Eichen house. I don’t know how, but he managed to convince my mother to let me visit Lydia. She looked so pale and sick. She didn’t blink once and her eyes looked lost. Not into something she was staring at, just lost and empty.

It was hard for me to see her like that. It felt like a knife somewhere insde me. I missed her and I wanted her to be okay again. I’d heard that talking to comatose people helped and they could actually hear you, so even though what I said was stupid and I didn’t have too much time, I tried to make the most out of it

“They wanted us to hold on to it for you.” I kept talking, as if she could hear me. Maybe she could. But it didn’t look like it at the moment. “I saw something about the Riemann Hypothesis.” My voice was starting to break, but I wanted to keep talking to her.

“Things like, nontrivial zeros, zeta functions and a lot of other stuff that I don’t really understand.” I chuckled. The only thing that kept me calm was her slow heartbeat. “Maybe you can wake up and explain it to me?” As I expected, there was no answer. “Come on, Lydia. You have to come back to us.” I pleaded her. “There's no way we're getting through this without you. Lydia, you have to wake up.”

“I miss you.”

“I think that's enough.” My mother walked into the room, making me to turn around and when she started walking closer to us, Stiles stood before me and blocked me out of her sight. “Stiles.”

She wanted us to go. I looked at Lydia one last time and I noticed something that really freaked me out. A part of her hair, above her ear had been shaved.

“Wait a second, what is this? What are they doing?” I asked and I was about to turn Lydia’s head to get a better vision. My mother pushed me away from her.

“All right, you need to go.”
She said and caressed Lydia’s head. “They shaved her head.”

“Look at it.” I said pointing at the shaved part of scalp. “Did you- did you know about this?”

“What are they gonna do? Drill a hole into her head?” Stiles came up with the craziest idea.

“Are you crazy? It's for E-C-T.” My mother said and tried to push us away from Lydia again. “Electroconvulsive therapy. They shave small portions of the scalp. It's done under general anesthesia and it's perfectly safe.”

She sighed when she saw we weren’t leaving.

“She's my daughter.” She was looking only at Stiles this whole time. “You don't think I'm trying everything I can to bring her out of this? Please, leave.”

“And she’s my sister.” I caught her attention. “I want to help her too. Why are you pushing me away? I’m your daughter too-“

“You’re not my daughter.” She spit in a raw and cold tone, making something inside me hurt. “I know you’re something, like the rest of your friends.” She looked away from me. “The ones who did this to Lydia.”

I stared at her in shock for a few moments, but she was not willing to look at me again. How could she say something like that? How did she find out about me being a supernatural creature? How could she blame me for something like this?

Her words made the knife inside me twist multiplicating the pain.

“How could you say-“
Before Stiles could move any step forward, a nurse from the establishment walked in and interrupted us.

“Is everything all right in here?”

“It's fine.” The woman I thought was my mother answered her. “Our guests are just leaving.” We wouldn’t move and she wouldn’t look at me, but still talked to me. “Kelsey, go. Or you're not coming back.”
