Rant
I'm super angry right now and I honestly just need to rant about it right now, so sorry if it bothers anyone.
My school's football team is in the playoffs. Last night was the second round and we played a private Catholic school. We've been rivals with them for a few years. Last year they played us on our homecoming (they lost) and their student section theme was "people from xxx(the town where I live)". I'm from a rural town, so they came in overalls and hunting gear and talked really slowly as though they were stupid because I guess that's all you are if you're from a farming town. We beat them. We destroyed them in our regular season game this year. I guess that made them mad.
It all started when the band went on the field for pregame. They were doing their show, but the other team wouldn't move. The leader of the color guard asked them to leave the field(like they were supposed to have already done) and the coach said, "Why should we move for you?" (Reported to me by several reliable band and color guard members). Then the team started swearing and spitting at them(In Michigan, this is considered assault).
Then they tried to play their stereo over the band. Obviously you could hear the band over it since we were on the other side of the field, but it threw off the band's timing. (They tried this again during the halftime show).
Then there was the issue with the quarterback kneeling(he's done that in several games). I'm not saying that it's wrong and I'm not saying that it's right, but we're a small town and there's four things that we all love. God, hunting, football, and America.
Some people on our side started booing and their fans responded and it all went downhill from there.
Like I said, we're a small, rural town in mid-Michigan. Our town is 97% white. There are two black boys on our football team, the rest are white. The other boys, however, are from our capital city and there were quite a few black players. They decided that appropriate behavior would be referring to our boys as "crackers".
Then, near the end, we realized how awful their quarterback was. I hate using this term, but he's pretty much good-for-nothing scum. He grabbed a boy on my team, let's call him Jake, he grabbed Jake from behind. Then he body slammed him and started trying to rip Jake's helmet off as he attempted to punch Jake in the face multiple times. Luckily this caused him to be ejected from the game.
When they were going back to their bus, after losing 35-0, they decided to pass through where the parents were hanging out at their cars. I guess the QB was still ticked about getting thrown out of the game. He saw a woman wearing Jake's number on a football shirt, Jake's mom, and he spit on her. Again, my state considers this assault.
I guess I'm just trying to say that I'm so disgusted that people can be so disrespectful and nasty. Was any of that behavior necessary? They're an awful representation of Catholic schools. I feel bad for anyone on the team who is getting a bad rep only because of a few of the guys. And I feel bad for kids at Catholic schools, or Catholics and Christians in general, because this bad behavior is going to be associated with them when they've done nothing wrong! I certainly don't want anyone to group me with that jerk!
I'm sorry again, I'm just really angry. Honestly, people are thinking about writing the paper, calling the cops, calling the football association, and even contacting the diocese(sorry if I got that wrong, I'm not Catholic. Whoever "runs" or "supports" the school's. You get what I mean.) The behavior was completely unacceptable and appalling.
