Chapter 6

My dreams taunt and tease me with the joyful sight of my mate and our pups wrestling in the wind blown luscious spring grass. They catch sight of me and we bound towards each other, happiness fills our hearts, we have finally found each other. I slow down so I don’t run her over. The sun reflects off her coat and her eyes sparkle with love. I close my tear burdened eyes and reach out to her, a cold void rushes over me and I awaken to the freezing rain pouring from the darkened skies.
I must have traveled in my sleep because half of my body was outside and the other half was inside, the clouds tears hit my face and joined my own. Shaking, I get up and begin walking outside. Where to? I’m not really sure. My skin and clothes are quickly soaked and a chill soon reaches my bones, the sun and moon fight over who’s turn it is to be in the sky but the clouds cover up their daily battle.
Before I realize it I have walked past the village and through the gentle stream to the open field where the herd of horses graze and rest. Their grazing stops and heads raise in acknowledgment of my presence. I sit down in the wet grass so I won’t drive them away, with questioning eye they timidly approach me. Their velvety noses are first to reach me, they take curious sniff of my face and body. I softly reach my hand up and pet their fur covered cheeks, the greyish blue horse leans into my touch, I instantly feel relaxed and content. The horses continue to graze around me and I drift off to sleep.
“Wake up you foolish man! You must be crazy to be out here.” My eyes fly open as my chilled body is being rattled by Listens to Horses. I stiffly stand up and the world begins spinning. I would have fallen if it wasn’t for his strong hold on my arm. “Come on all help you to your wigwam.” With weakened legs and a stumbling step we slowly make it back next to my dying fire. Listens to Horses leaves me on my bed and goes to collect firewood.
Before he gets back Moon Teller comes in, “Good morning, I’ve heard of your foolish adventure you took last night, you are now sick and must stay here. You must realize that your body is much weaker.” I blatantly ignore him and strip myself of my wet clothes then cover myself in a warm blanket as Listens to Horses returns with wood. Moon Teller heaves a heavy sigh, “You are stubborn for your own good! Maybe once you start going stir crazy you will realize that I know what I am talking about.”
After about two long days I do just that, I start going stir crazy, Moon Teller was right, with his new body I need to watch what I’m doing. After the sun has spent half its time in the sky Moon Teller comes in to check on me, “You seem to be doing much better. I brought you some meat and cornbread today, when you're done you should go wash in the stream and tomorrow Listens to Horses is gonna take you with him to work with a young colt.”
Sleep does not come easily as all I can think about is spending time with the peaceful horses once again, they have a way of calming my storming thoughts and help me escape all of my new found stress. Listens to Horses comes in as the sun begins to rise, “Moon Teller says you are feeling better and I am to show you how to work with horses. He thinks you will do good with them.” He allows me time to dress and then we walk across the village.
The horses are gathered by the stream with their noses dipped in the cool water. Listens to Horses walks up to the greyish blue horse that let me pet him, “This is Little River, he is a blue roan and is 4 years old. I have been working with him for a long time and today we will ride him.” Listens to horses wraps a rope around his neck and leads him away from the herd.
We walk over a small grass covered hill and down into a valley where there is a pond, Listens to Horses attempts to lead Little River into the water but he plants his feet and refuses to take another step. Listens to Horses calmly walks out of the water and does a few circles with him then tries to lead him in the water again. Little River rears up and lashes out with his hooves.
With patience Listens to Horses does more circles outside the water, Little River’s shoulder brushes my arm. A sudden rush of anxiety and fear take over me. The murky water is filled with unseen dangers and Listens to Horses is running right into it, the fool will probably get killed, I’ve got to help save him, we need to leave.
