Ch. 16
Wolfpaw yawned and blinked his eyes open. Sunlight filtered into the den. He looked around but Hawkpaw wasn't there. He shook himself, his body felt tense and throbbed. Painfully, he got up and out of the apprentice den. He looked at the group of cats gathered in front of the High Rock. It was way past dawn. He spotted Willowflight who beckoned him over. He sat beside her, at the edge of the gathered group of cats.
"Because of the battle yesterday, you're supposed to rest for a few days, just like me and the rest of the group who fought Thunderclan," WIllowflight explained. Wolfpaw nodded, relieved.
"What's going on now?" asked Wolfpaw.
"Lotusstar is going to do the ceremony for Dukkit, Volekit and Lilackit, I'm assuming," said Willowflight. "And then hopefully, he'll talk about what we're going to do about that log." Wolfpaw nodded, barely registering what his mentor was saying. Lotusstar started speaking. Wolfpaw was lost in thought
"Your mentor, Duskpaw, will be Ottercry," Lotusstar declared. Wolfpaw forced himself to listen. "Lilacpaw, your mentor shall be Palestorm." Palestorm and Ottercry leapt onto the High Rock and touched noses with Duskpaw and Lilacpaw.
"Volepaw, as you wanted, you will be learning to be a medicine cat. Your mentor shall be Blackfur," declared Lotusstar. A few excited murmurs broke out. Wolfpaw stifled a yawn and shook himself. His body groaned at the effort. All cats started cheering and whooping the new apprentice's names. Wolfpaw sighed, they would be sleeping in the apprentice den now, with Hawkpaw and him. He had liked it being private. After the howls died down, Lotusstar beckoned Brambleheart to his side.
"As you all must know, yesterday, we confronted Thunderclan," boomed Brambleheart. "We won!" He let it soak in as cats jumped up and down and howled.
"Riverclan!" shouted the cats in unison. Lotusstar flicked his tail and all cats returned silent.
"They will not mess with us again," Lotusstar noted. "But now we need to push the log away. We will need the strongest cats. We will be doing it right after this gathering. The cats who will help will be, Badgerfang, Lionheart, Lightningcloud, Stormfire, Finchjump, Clovercreek, Brambleheart and I." Lotusstar leapt off followed by Brambleheart and they headed for the camp entrance. Most cats returned to the fresh-kill pile or to their dens while the chosen warriors crowded near Lotusstar.
"You know, since you're not going to be doing anything for a few days," Willowflight thought aloud. "You should go follow them. Don't interfere just watch them. Sometimes just watching is the best way to learn. Go on, before they leave." Wolfpaw sighed and padded to the entrance just as Lionheart, the last cat, disappeared through it. He found them walking towards Thunderclan slowly. He trotted to catch up with them.
"What are you doing here Wolfpaw?" asked Brambleheart. "You can't help. You're supposed to rest and you're not strong enough. And it's dangerous."
"Willowflight said that since I won't be doing anything for a few days, I could just watch you," Wolfpaw explained. Lotusstar nodded.
"Good idea," he agreed. The patrol headed towards the fallen tree slowly, joking and laughing on the way. Wolfpaw couldn't bring himself to tell any jokes but he listened intently on the warriors' remarks and comments. Finally, the log could be seen from far. They approached it a bit more and Lotusstar stopped the patrol with a flick of his tail.
"Wolfpaw, watch from here," he ordered. Wolfpaw obliged. He sat down then decided to relax and lay down on his stomach, watching the patrol approached the tree. They talked for a bit, inspecting the tree and Wolfpaw felt his eyes closing. He drifted into the land of sleep.
