Chapter 4

Salem's breathing beside me was shallow. The boat had shook as it thumped onto the sandy shore. The shuffle of feet moved past. Salem tasted the air out of instinct. Felix recognized the scent before I did and started to walk out from behind the boxes that shielded us from the big feet of twoleg men. Naturally, Salem followed carefully and saw the man. He knew this twoleg. He was the man that woke Felix every morning and petted him whenever he got the chance. His scruffy grey hair moved in the wind and his brown eyes stared at Felix. Felix purred as the man rubbed his head.

"I can take you off the boat. It's to tall for you cats to get down safely." The twoleg said. It made no sense to Salem so it was a bit of a horrible surprise when the man picked up Felix.

Salem looked up at Felix, wide eyed. He nodded vaguely. Salem gritted his teeth and too let the man pick him up. Salem dug his claws into the shirt of the man as he was lifted up to his height.

Felix glanced at him and mewed "It's ok. He's just taking us off the boat. No need to be mouse brained." Salem glowered at his friend. How could he say that when this twoleg was clearly taking us somewhere else.

The men on the ground started to whack at the ship with axes but that was all Salem could see before the man started going down a trapdoor. Salem could tell that they were going down stairs but he couldn't see a thing. He squinted slightly but he couldn't tell if his eyes were open or closed. So he relied on his other senses. He could smell Felix, the man and rotting wood. He flicked his ears around but could only hear the footsteps of the man and his loud breathing. After an uncomfortable amount of time, Salem finally started to see light pouring through a doorway. It only took a few seconds for his eyes to adjust, revealing a light tan beach with dark water.

The man started to trudge through the water, kicking up the salty liquid which made Salem's fur stand on end. He arrived at the beach and set down Felix and Salem.

Salem grimaced at the wet sand under his paws. It sunk in just enough for his muscles to tense. The man walked past them to join the other men that were rolling in the sand. Salem was extremely uncomfortable. He didn't like change. On the boat, life was fine. He had plenty of food and a friend to keep him company. It gave him a head ache when he thought of spending cold nights in the forest alone...

After the men stopped celebrating, they started to unload cargo from the ship. Boxes, barrels, and bags sat in a huge pile, far taller than any of the men. They used wooden planks to build a small camp, father away from the lapping ocean.

Soon enough the light in the sky died away like how a candle slowly flickers out, leaving you in darkness. A cold wind hit Felix and Salem, knocking them awake.

"Dear Starclan, it's cold out here!" Salem yowled to Felix.

"We should go under the trees. It'll be less windy there." Felix replied.

Salem nodded and started to follow him up towards the trees where they settled down under some great ferns. Instead of feeling comfort in sleep, all he could focus on was that it felt not like the end of their journey, but the beginning...
