Chapter 1

Felix woke up cold and frail. The hard floor felt moist but firm under his paws. His claws were sheathed. "Another nightmare..." He sighed. Felix tried to remember what the nightmare was about. He almost always had them but could never remember what it was.

A loud banging interrupted his thoughts. He got down from his small ledge and came out a small hole in the wall. A twoleg man was outside, crouched down with his arm outstretched. He pet Felix's white pelt. His hand was ruff and cold, his finger nails dirty.

"Let's catch some mice to please the captain."

Felix bounded off in search of fresh kill. His head perked up and he opened his mouth to taste the air. His glands picked up the salty smell of the ocean. His legs lead him to the side of the boat and he opened his mouth happily, drinking in the salty smell.

He looked out on the horizon, little ripples across it's surface. The sun was just peeking out but have enough light for the crew to see with.

Felix stretched and trotted over to two barrels sitting in the corner. He stopped in his tracks as he recognized the scent of Salem. He mewed in laughter.

"Ya know, your terrible at hiding."

Salem stepped out from behind the barrels, his grey pelt shining brightly in the sunlight. His apple green eyes filled with amusement.

"That's because I wasn't trying. If I had you'd probably thought I'd chased a mouse of the boat!" Salem said licking his paw. "Come on. I'm hungry." He trotted off, without waiting for a response.

Felix shook his head and raced after him. He had ran into the middle of the ship, with big twoleg men walking around. He sniffed the air but twoleg scent clogged his nose, preventing him from finding any prey.

Nearly getting trampled by the twolegs, Felix bolted back to the barrels. He spotted Salem crouching  in the corner. He hurtled into the boxes and popped out the other end holding a plump mouse.

Felix's tail whipped back and forth in annoyance. Salem had always been  an amazing hunter, especially for his young age. Jealousy washed over him and Felix trudged below deck, thinking he would have better luck there.

The air inside was chilly and smelled dusty. There were chickens that squawked loudly when Felix padded by them. A flurry of feathers showered their pen, the reek of bird dung overcoming him. He swiftly left, hearing the chickens calm down a bit.

In front of him there was a huge haybail, that nearly touched the ceiling. Felix smiled. A strong scent of mice came off the hay, all fresh.

Felix squeezed himself between the haystack and other twoleg things until he was behind the haybail. He crouched low to the ground, feeling his belly fur graze the wood floor. His ears pricked when he heard a shuffling in the hay.

A mouse started to creep out, in the opposite direction of Felix. Immediately, he lunged for the mouse and caught it under his paw. With a quick movement, the mouse was dead.
