Chapter Three
I wish I could be as good as them! Rabbitpaw stubbornly thought. Duskpelt, Quickstorm, and Petalpaw each caught one plump rabbit in the group that the apprentice had spotted on lookout rock. They told Rabbitpaw to be silent as the three quietly crept forward and swiftly chomped down on as many rabbits as they could, quickly ending their life.
"Ah, don't worry Rabbitpaw, under my training you can catch the fattest of prey." The apprentice looked up at Duskpelt. "Do you really think so?" His mentor was about the answer when Petalpaw padded forward and lay her catch in front of the white furred cat.
"Quickstorm said that we can share the one I caught," she meowed. He nodded and lied down on the grass.
"Before we start eating, let us give thanks to StarClan for our meal," Duskpelt meowed.
And thank them for the biggest of rabbits for us to catch.
After a few moments Petalpaw pushed the rabbit towards Rabbitpaw.
"You can have the first bite." He gave her a surprised look, then purred.
"Thanks!" He took a chuck out of the fresh-kill and savored the warm piece of meat. Is it just me or does it taste better when it's eaten out here?
After pushing the rabbit back, he looked the sky which few clouds blocked. A flock of birds past overhead, and squawks echoed throughout the endless plains. The sunlight was pleasant, and it's warm rays touched every corner of his view.
"I remember my first time out of camp," Petalpaw remarked, chewing her food while talking. "I was dying to get out after so many moons pent up in there, and well, I wasn't disappointed." She swallowed. "However, I do miss the bliss of taking naps in the nursery."
"I guess you could be right." Rabbitpaw took another bite as the prey was passed back.
After a few moments of rather awkward silence and eating, Petalpaw meowed, "So, how's your first day as an apprentice going?" Rabbitpaw let out a purr of joy.
"Its great! I never imagined that our territory could be so big! And there's still the Thunderpath..." He took his final bite and rose to his paws. "You take the rest Petalpaw." Letting out a yawn he trotted over to Duskpelt. The tom seemed to be finishing when he came.
"Done already? Your pretty quick," Duskpelt remarked. "Give me a few moments so I can finish." He ate in clean, quick bites and rose to his paws once he finished. His eyes shifted to Quickstorm who stood nearby. "Alright Quickstorm, let's not waste more time." The silvery tom nodded, and they all set off once more.
As the group of cats got back to exploring the territory, a breeze stirred and bushed the green lands in a cool, fresh air.
"Greenleaf is so nice," Petalpaw meowed after a while.
"And plenty of rabbits to eat, too!" Rabbitpaw licked his lips with content.
"Be glad that StarClan shares this precious prey during the warm season," Quickstorm meowed to Rabbitpaw.
Rabbitpaw was about to reply when an unusual smell trickled into his nose. "Quickstorm, what's that smell? It seems weird."
"Oh, that's the Thunderpath," Petalpaw chimed in.
"Yes, Petalpaw," Quickstorm commented. "We're almost there."
Moments later Rabbitpaw heard a faint buzzing sound every once and a while that as time went on grew into a roar as they walked on. Then he saw the fabled slick, black stone path. It went in an unnaturally perfect straight line with odd yellow bars every few tail-lengths right in the middle of it. It also was strangely quiet. Rabbitpaw looked to both sides, the path only curving at the edge of his vision towards the ShadowClan border.
"Wow, what is this?" He said, filled with wonder. He put his paw on the edge of the smooth path.
This is the strangest thing-
"Rabbitpaw get back!" Duskpelt yowled. He jerked backwards as a beast roared past the cats, the thing casting a metallic glare. His heart felt like it was in his ears, rapidly pounding as he panted heavily.
"We only cross when we know it's safe, Rabbitpaw," his mentor sighed.
"W-what was that thing?"
Rabbitpaw meowed, ignoring Duskpelt's comment.
"A monster. It puts twolegs in its belly and makes them go around quicker." His mentor replied.
How weird twolegs are. I'm glad to be a cat. But I didn't even hear it coming... Rabbitpaw let out a shake in an attempt to get rid of his shock.
"Also," Duskpelt continued, "Highstones is over that way." He pointed his tail to the huge rocks that jutted from the ground and pierced the sky. "We will go there another time."
Quickstorm let out a long, luxurious stretch and meowed, "It's been quite a long day for all of us, don't you agree?" Rabbitpaw looked up and saw the sun was starting it's routinely descend downward.
"Wow! Today was so cool with all the stuff WindClan has!" Rabbitpaw beamed, as if the last few moments had never happened. Duskpelt let out a small purr of amusement. Just then a breeze stirred, and it carried a foul odor.
"Badger scent," Quickstorm meowed swiftly. "Fresh too. We best report this to Stonestar immediately."
"First RiverClan, now this?" Rabbitpaw hissed. "Yuck!"
"Less complaining, more walking, Rabbitpaw!" Quickstorm meowed sternly.
"Yes, Quickstorm." He swished his tail across the ground back and forth as he walked along with the others.
He watched the sun dip down into the horizon, unaware of the passing time. When he looked back forward, the camp's entrance came to greet him again. He saw a car far away looking at the group. As he got closer he realized who it was.
"Hey Moorpaw!" His pace turned into a fast trot, and he sped ahead of the group.
"Rabbitpaw! How was it?" Moorpaw asked as he rushed up to greet him.
"It was so cool! I knew that WindClan was large, but the territory was huge!" Rabbitpaw meowed while coming to a halt. "What'd you do today?"
"Just some hunting practice. Nothing special," Moorpaw shrugged.
"I wish I could hunt." Rabbitpaw muttered.
Before Moorpaw could answer, the group caught up. "Oh hi Petalpaw! I didn't know you were out with Rabbitpaw today," the brown furred cat meowed cheerfully.
"Yeah, Quickstorm and I went out and marked the boarders and decided to tag along," she said.
A tail swished along his flank, and he turned his head to find it was Duskpelt. "We're going to Stonestar to report the badger scent," His mentor meowed. "And Rabbitpaw, you must be exhausted from today. Take a good rest, alright?" As he said that, Rabbitpaw suddenly remembered his aching body. He wasn't used to this sort of activity. "Gladly," he returned. Rabbitpaw sat down slowly and quickly licked his forepaw.
"The first day's always rough," Moorpaw meowed. "Don't worry, it gets better."
"Oh, it's the kit's first day outta camp, right?" A voice meowed.
Great, it's Stormpaw. "Hi Stormpaw," Rabbitpaw grumpily meowed. The huge burrower apprentice was a brown furred tabby with a pure white underbelly and was the same height as Petalpaw, due to them being siblings. However, their personalities were like fire and ice.
"Looks like your closer to getting your warrior name, Rabbitdung!" he sneered.
"Would you quit teasing all of the apprentices, Stormpaw?" Petalpaw sighed.
Stormpaw swished his tail and rolled his eyes. "Fine," he sighed. His gaze shifted to something in the distance. "Hey Redpaw! Wait for me!" Stormpaw trotted away and snickered, "I'd watch my back if I were you two!" Then he ran off.
"I'm sorry he said that, Rabbitpaw," Petalpaw apologized. "He sometimes acts as if he has a fur ball stuck somewhere."
Moorpaw nodded. "He always does this to the other apprentices and acts bossy just because he's a bit older than everyone else."
Rabbitpaw looked at the ground. "Yeah, he teased me as a kit anyway," he meowed.
And he's a burrower, so I don't have to train with him.
Then he looked up at the two other cats. "But I'll show him. I'm going to be the best warrior there ever was!"
