Chapter 3
"From this day forward you will now be Goldenpaw." Onestar started the ceremony. As most cats looked upon the pup in shaded looks. It was clear that not many accepted the idea of the dog in WindClan.
Goldenpaw looked around, which warrior would be his mentor? He knew Sedgewhisker couldn't be, it was against the warrior code for a mother to mentor their kits. Though, she really wasn't his mother, was she.
"Leaftail, you are a gifted warrior and I hope to see your skills pass down to the generations to come. I believe you are the best choice to keep an eye on this interesting apprentice you will now mentor." Onestar stated, watching the pup with slight suspicion. The golden creature creeped over to his new mentor.
With his muzzle being slightly larger the the cat's, he dipped his head, and Leaftail's and Goldenpaw's noses collided. The first to call his new apprentice name were of course his denmates. Fennelkit and Weaselkit shouted his name proudly, some of the clan were joined in.
"Goldenpaw, Goldenpaw!" Those who felt as if he shouldn't had been made an apprentice as a dog reluctantly joined in the calling. Goldenpaw was now a true apprentice, but he had a long way to go if he was ever to be accepted. He promised to himself that he make the clan proud to have him, even if he didn't understand why other warriors looked at him as he was different.
As the voices died down Goldenpaw walked up to the two kits. As they both looked up at him.
"Wow! An apprentice now, so lucky." Weaselkit stated, sounding slightly jealous. Goldenpaw swatted playfully at his younger brother.
"Just wait! One more moon and you'll be out there too!" The new apprentice mentioned as Leaftail flicked his ears.
"The sun is still high, we should make well for this time and show you some of the territory." He lead the pup out of camp.
"Don't forget to tell us about your day when you get back!" Fennelkit called to him as she spotted him flick his short tail in response. The two exited the camp and Goldenpaw dipped his head.
"Where to first, Leaftail?" He asked curiously, glancing around the large moor territory. He could see far more in the distance then when he was in camp. The kits would always listen to the apprentices go on and on about the view, and finally he was to see it himself.
"The ThunderClan territory. However it might be best for us not to be seen when we get closer." Leaftail stated, the clans had not heard about a pup being taken into WindClan, and it would be far confusing for them to understand if they found out before Onestar announced it himself. What will he tell the other clans?
Leaftail knew the other clans would be confused. However during the last gathering cats came back from WindClan mention something about a Twoleg joining ThunderClan and fell into the lake to become a cat. Perhaps StarClan has gone insane to let creatures be accepted in the clans. Or perhaps they had something planned for the others.
Goldenpaw stopped as he sniffed the air. He scrunched up his nose at the smell. "We are close aren't we?" Leaftail halted as well blinking up at the. pup. His sense of smell was strong, as Leaftail could just barely smell the scent markers set by the forest clan. He nodded, looking at him with a slight proud look in his eyes. Leaftail knew Goldenpaw was going to be a good hunter when he learned.
Perhaps the clan could grow stronger from the pup being in the clan.
"Take a good sniff, learn these markings well, as once you learn the borders enough you'll be on a patrol to mark them." Instructed Leaftail. Goldenpaw looked off into the distance towards ThunderClan.
"Do you think the other clans will look at me strangely like our cats do..?" Goldenpaw seemed to say out loud. Leaftail sighed, knowing that the pup didn't go unnoticed to the looks around.
"Perhaps, but that's because you are unique. I'm sure at the first gathering you go to cats will be alert. You are far larger then a average apprentice and you still got a while to go." Leaftail started as Goldenpaw stepped in.
"But why do cats look at me as I'm different?"
"Not many believe a dog should be in a clan full of cats. We grew to know dogs as our enemies, however you were just a pup when we found you save Weaselkit and Fennelkit." Leaftail mentioned as he led the pup back towards camp. Goldenpaw knew he wasn't a cat however it still seemed strange that dogs and cats couldn't get along.
"Will I eventually be accepted?" Goldenpaw asked hopping towards his mentor, to follow. Leaftail nodded.
"You already have a good sense of smell, you'll be a fantastic hunter for moons to come. Tomorrow we'll visit the RiverClan border then I will take you for some hunting practice. I'll be sure to find those strength of yours and we will build on them. We will make a great warrior out of you yet."
