Chapter 7:
Gorsepaw slunk forward, closing in on the mouse. She kept her tail slightly above the ground, what Smoke had taught her heavy on her mind. The mouse's ear twitched as it looked up from the piece of hay it was nibbling on. It scanned the area with it's beady black eyes, and spotted Gorsepaw. When it spotted her, she pounced and killed it with a neat blow to the neck. She picked it up and looked around, a satisfied purr rumbling in her throat.
"Nice catch." The shadowy brown tom complimented. Gorsepaw nodded.
"Thanks, Shadow!" She purred. "The training you gave me really helped." She added after a moments thought.
Shadow dipped his head. "It wasn't nothing I couldn't handle. You just needed... A little help." Gorsepaw smiled at the tom fondly.
"Well... Does the freshkill pile need to be refilled?" Gorsepaw asked, remembering how she had surprised Julie and Timber with the pile of dead mice. They had wondered what it was, so she had to explain that it was a freshkill pile, and they had to put freshly caught prey there so it could be well stocked and everybody would be able to eat whenever they want.
Shadow shook his head. "No, it's well stocked. You don't have to worry about it."
"Alright." Gorsepaw mewed, stretching her paws, realizing that fur had grown over most of the scratches she got from the fox. She bent down and ate the mouse hungrily before looking over to where Timber and Julie were curled up together in a corner. Julie might be having kit's soon. Gorsepaw thought. The day before, they had told her that they were mates and that Julie was expecting.
She walked over to the two, and prodded Julie gently with a paw. "Wake up!" She murmured gently. The calico she-cat leapt to her paws, staring around wildly.
"Dogs? Foxes? Badgers?" Julie hissed. "Where are they?!"
"Woah! Calm down, Julie!" Gorsepaw exclaimed, rearing back as Julie lashed around with her claws. "It's just me! You promised to give me a tour of the outside of the barn." Julie blinked, as though disappointed that she want going to battle any crazed animal.
"Oh yeah... Of course..." She mumbled, her ear twitching awkwardly as she ran her tongue over her pelt. "Alright, let's go. Since you haven't been outside yet, you'll need to stay close to me because you're easy prey to larger animals. Especially foxes."
Gorsepaw nodded. Julie slipped through the jagged hole in the middle of the wooden planks, and Gorsepaw bounded after her.
