Chapter 8
Mintpaw woke to Bramblestar calling for a clan meeting. It was the morning after the gathering, and Mintpaw was exhausted. All she wanted to do was sleep a while longer. She got up and stretched the sleep away, then walked out into the the clearing.
She noticed the cats where clustered into little groups, each deep in conversation. Mintpaw was about to ask a group that consisted of Blossomfall, Mousewhisker, and Rosepetal about what was going on, when she suddenly remembered what had happened at last night's gathering. Mintpaw saw Owlpaw and Hollypaw and went to sit down by them.
"I still can't believe that Blackstar would say that at a gathering." Hollypaw exclaimed as she turned to face Mintpaw. She was about to answer when Bramblestar started speaking.
"Last night at the gathering, Blackstar threatened to take our territory from the current shadowclan border, to the abandoned twoleg nest." He paused as the shocked murmurs rose from the gathered clan. "Blackstar's excuse for stealing our territory is because he thinks that Thunderclan has been sticking there noses in other clans business, just like the last time we helped them, when they were having trouble with the twolegs."
Mintpaw had heard the story of when after the Great Battle, Thunderclan had helped Shadowclan when the twolegs were straying farther than usual from there pelt dens. Thunderclan had helped make the plan that Shadowclan, with the help of some Thunderclan warriors, had used to drive out the twolegs.
A shocked gasp rose from the crowd, followed by many comments that whirled together in a mass of voices, so Mintpaw was only able to catch a few of them.
"They seemed happy to have the help at the time!"
"They were practically begging for our help."
Bramblestar waited for the chatter to quiet down before continuing.
"We have until the next gathering to either give up the territory, or face Shadowclan and any other clan that agrees with them in battle." Bramblestar paused to let his words sink in. "I have talked to the senior warriors, and we all agree that we can't just give up our territory. We will fight Shadowclan when the time comes, but for now, I would like to make three new warriors to help us when the time for battle comes." Mintpaw looked over at her fellow apprentices, Amberpaw, Snowpaw, and Dewpaw. It must be them.
"Snowpaw, Amberpaw, and Dewpaw, please step forward." The three apprentices looked shocked, but stepped forward. "I, Bramblestar, leader of Thunderclan, call upon our warrior ancestors to look down upon these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you in their turn." He shifted his gaze towards the apprentices. "Amberpaw, Snowpaw, and Dewpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and to protect and defend this your clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do." They mewed In unison, their eyes bright as they looked up to their clan leader.
"Then by the powers of Starclan, I give you your warrior names. Amberpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Amberbreeze, Starclan honors your speed and honesty, and we welcome you as a full warrior of Thunderclan." Bramblestar rests his chin on her head, and she licked his shoulder in return.
"Dewpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Dewdrop, Starclan honors your determination and enthusiasm, and we welcome you as a full member of Thunderclan." He put his chin on Dewdrop's head, and he licked his leaders shoulder.
"Snowpaw, from this moment on, you will be know as Snowwhisker, Starclan honors your kindness and patience, and we welcome you as a full member of Thunderclan." Once again Bramblestar put his chin on the new warrior's head, and Snowwhisker licked his shoulder.
"Amberbreeze! Dewdrop! Snowwhisker!" the clan cheered. Mintpaw went over and congratulated them on becoming warriors, then padded off to find Dovewing. She found her sitting with Ivypool and Bumblestripe by the fresh-kill pile.
"What are we doing today?" Mintpaw asked enthusiastically.
"Well, First we are going out on patrol, then after that you need to check the elders for ticks and change their bedding. "
"Okay, let's go!"
After she was done with her duties, Mintpaw was exhausted. She took a vole from the fresh-kill pile and quickly ate it before washing herself, and finally went to go to sleep in her nest. patrol was uneventful and taking care of Purdy was just terrible, and now Mintpaw was really looking forward to a good sleep. Mintpaw rested her chin on her paws, and curled her tail up over her nose, and finally slipped out of consciousness.
Mintpaw woke in a lush green forest that she recognized from the night that she met Hollyleaf, but the scene quickly changed from one of comfort and safety, to one filled with darkness and blood. She saw cats fighting, and she tried to move forward to help, or stop the fighting, but she couldn't. She was frozen in her tracks. She couldn't move, not even a mouse-length.
The fighting was horrifying to watch. Much more vicious than any battle from the story's Lionblaze and Cinderheart have told her. She winced as she watched a black tom with amber eyes shred a grey tabby tom's ear in one swipe of a claw.
The fighting continued. The black tom was shredding every cat that came close to him, until there was only dead bodies. Suddenly, a breeze came. It hit the black tom and carried him with it until there was only her, and the bodies of the deceased.
Then she heard an ominous voice whispering in her mind. It was Hollyleaf.
Beware the breeze, Mintpaw, for it will only bring death.
