Chapter 24

I was just sitting in bed when I suddenly got an idea. "Hey, I haven't updated in a while and I have nothing better to do except stare at the ceiling." So, here you go. -S

Reynolds' POV

I tossed a couple mice and a thrush onto the prey pile and padded over to George. "Where's Eliza and Thomas?" I asked, drawing my tail over my paws.

"Training." He replied shortly. Just then, Bailey burst through the entrance of camp.

"Intruders!" He gasped. George immediately leapt up and ran over to him.

"From Washington's group?" He asked, his voice emotionless. Bailey shook his head.

"They said they were looking for Thomas Jefferson and Elizabeth Schuyler when we were patrolling the border. The others remained there to make sure they didn't try anything whilst I came here. I-i don't know if Thomas would actually want to talk to them but-" Bailey rambled, but George cut him off.

"Go get Thomas and Eliza and lead them there. I'll gather a few cats to be on the lookout." He dismissed and turned away. Bailey hared back into the trees. I, of course, wanted a piece of the action and followed Bailey's scent trail to the border. A group of about four cats sat at the border while five of our cats snarled at them. Bailey quickly burst out of the bushes with Eliza and Thomas at his heels.

"Who sent you here?" Thomas questioned, sticking his nose into the white and gray tom's face.

"Henry, sir. You must be Thomas Jefferson, pleasure to meet you." He greeted. Thomas slowly dipped his head. "I'm Francis, this is Frances, Landon, and André. We are at your service." Thomas beckoned them with his tail and led them and Eliza back into the forest, but not before dismissing the patrol. I'd better tell George it was a false alarm. I ran back to camp and skidded to a halt in front of George.

"Where were you? I needed you to help me organize everyone!" He snapped.

"I'm sorry, George, but it was a false alarm, you can call off the lookouts." I apologized. He snorted before whisking away. Jeez, what's his problem?

*Third Person*

John studied the intruders for a moment longer before turning to ask Alex if he wanted to go hunting with him. Alex, of course, was immersed in a serious conversation with his brother and Washington, which he didn't want to interrupt. He slipped out of camp and sat at the river that flowed through Washington's territory. "You come here often too?" A voice came from behind him. He turned to see Connor staring back at him. His usually expressionless face was conveying deep sadness.

"H-hey, are you alright?" John asked, clear concern evident in his voice. Connor sat next to him and studied his paws for a few moments.

"It's nothing you can fix, trust me," Connor finally said, looking up at John. John looked thoughtful for a moment before looking into the river and quickly flashing out a paw. His claws snagged a fish and it landed in front of Connor.

"Take it. It won't make your problems go away, but you'll get to try something new. You could even share it with Evan if you'd like." John said, flashing Connor a smile. For once, Connor didn't have to force himself to smile.

"Thank you, John. We should talk more often," He said, picking up the fish and turning away.

"We should, and you're welcome." John replied. Once Connor disappeared into the trees, John sighed heavily and his fur began to prickle. He could almost feel his presence around him. Why don't you leave, fag? You'll never be loved by anyone, so you sure are lucky to have me! John shivered with fearful anticipation and awaited the blow that never came. He sagged in relief and let the water from the river splash onto his face, trying to rid the images from his head.

Trying to convince himself that he's fine, he stood up and stalked over to the nearest tree. He scored his claws through it, as if he were taking him head on. Little did he know that he'd be meeting him again all too soon...

Hercules' POV

I've know Laf for a while now, and I'd love to tell him how I feel, but I just can't. Every time I try, I'm at a loss for words. I'm afraid he'll reject me, just like everyone else before I met Washington. But that was about my tail, this is different. I sighed as my shoulders sagged. Who am I kidding? I can't tell him, it'll be the death of me. The sun was beginning to set and I was just about to pad into the den when Laf approached me. "Come with me, I've got something to show you." He said excitedly.

"Alright, then. Let's go." I followed him out of camp and we ran through the forest. We hadn't ran for long when Laf stopped at the base of a tree and began climbing it. How am I supposed to climb it? I haven't climbed a tree in a long time and I was rather concerned for my safety. Laf seemed to notice and rested on the lowest branch.

"Don't worry, Herc, I'm here and I won't let you fall." He promised. I nodded and took a deep, sharp breath before leaping onto the trunk. I began to shimmy my way up the trunk until I got to the branch. Laf hauled me up onto it and proceeded to the next branch. After much climbing and pulling, we made to the top. At first, I was worried that the branch was weak and might fall due to our weight, but it was strangely solid. As I looked up, I saw the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen in my life.

"Oh my..." I began, but I was too blown away to finish.

"I come here every so often and the view is amazing, isn't it?" Laf said, staring at the setting sun and darkening sky.

"It's beautiful, like you." I said without thinking. I immediately realized what I had said and leaped down each branch much faster than we came up. I continued running until I reached the camp and slipped into my den. John and Connor weren't there, but I didn't really stop to think about it as I drew my tail over my nose in an attempt to sleep. Instead, all I could hear was my stupid mistake ringing in my ears.

You ruined any chance with him. Good going, Herc...

I have finished in record time. I hope you enjoyed and thank you for reading! -S
