Chapter 22
Hi guys. I'm not dead, I've just been busy with stuff. Also, how in the world does this stupid book have over a thousand reads?! Holy moly... Well, I'm glad that you people actually enjoy this weird 'AU'. I just wanted to say, thank you. You guys are the absolute best! Trigger Warning: Homophobic conversations. My apologies in advice. -S
Eliza's POV
I bared my teeth in satisfaction. The cats Jefferson chose to train were picking up quickly and even knew some great techniques to teach us. I sat next to Jefferson in the camp and drew a paw over my ear. "When do you plan to attack them?" Reynolds asked, padding up to us. Jefferson looked thoughtful for a moment before replying.
"We'll talk in my den, bring George with you. Once we decide on details, we'll tell the others." Jefferson ordered, padding away. As Reynolds turned away, he flicked his tail for me to follow. I followed him the short distance to his den and slipped inside. As I looked around, I realized that his den was large and roomy, so it didn't take long for me to find a comfortable spot to sit. Jefferson sat in front of me and wrapped his tail over his paws. A few mere heartbeats later, Reynolds returned with a wheezing George following him. "George, are you alright?" Jefferson asked, sounding quite concerned.
"Yes, fine." George said confidently, holding his head higher.
"Very well," Jefferson sighed. "As you know, Washington and his crew pose a threat to us all. His friends could infect us with their uncured disease. Therefore, I've decided to take matters into my own paws. In exactly two moons time, we will attack them. It must be during the night so they won't see us coming. Autumn will be coming to an end and they'll be weak from hunger. By then, our cats will be strong enough to take them on." Jefferson said passionately, sinking his claws in the ground as if he were sinking into the pelt of one of them.
Then, he turned to me. "You know their territory well, as you've been living there for quite some time. You will lead us into battle." My eyes widened in shock.
"M-me? Are you sure?" I asked, searching his eyes for any sign of hesitation, but found none. He nodded.
"I trust you, Eliza." He said, his eyes sparkling.
"I... Thank you. Thank you so much. This is a huge honor." I said formally, bowing slightly. He nodded again and dismissed us. As I left his den, I could've sworn I heard the bushes rustling and smelled a faint trace of my old home. After a second look and sniff, I didn't hear or smell anything out of the ordinary. Shrugging, I padded to the large rock that overlooked the entire camp and sat beneath it. Nothing matters anymore except to correct those that are wrong.
Samuel's POV
I led Madison and Aaron towards Jefferson's camp. I halted at the border and sniffed the air. "There's a patrol coming," I hissed quietly. "Get in the bushes." Aaron, Madison, and I slipped into a holly bush and pressed our bellies to the ground.
"There's a trace of those scoundrels, but I don't see any around." A she-cat squeaked.
"Alright, let's move on." A gruff tom's voice replied. I strained my ears to listen to their receding paw steps. Once they went silent, I waited a few more heartbeats before coming out again, just to be safe.
"Roll in the dirt to cover your scent." I told the pair. Once our scent was covered, we snuck over the border and I took them on a path that led directly to his camp. I peered through the camp wall and spotted Jefferson speaking with Eliza and Reynolds. I strained my ears to hear what they were saying and saw Madison and Aaron were doing the same.
"When do you plan to attack them?" I heard Reynolds ask.
"We'll talk in my den-" Jefferson began, but I didn't bother to hear the rest of it.
"We need to get closer to the den." Madison said, his ears twitching. I nodded.
"There's a gap here that leads to a bush right outside Jefferson's den." Aaron pointed out after a few more heartbeats of observation.
"I'll go first," I offered. "Your lives are more necessary than mine anyway." I slipped through the gap before either could protest. I saw George's tail disappear into the cave just as I found a good spot in the bush. Madison and Aaron followed soon after and settled down next to me. I strained my ears to listen to their plan.
"In exactly two moons time, we'll attack them. It must be during the night so they won't see us coming. Autumn is coming to an end and prey will become scarce. Winter will kill most of the prey so they'll be weak from hunger. By then, our cats will be strong enough to take them on." I heard Jefferson say. My eyes widened in horror and shock. "You know their territory well, as you've been living there for quite some time. You will lead us into battle." No... Once they had finished, Jefferson dismissed them.
"Now's our time to leave." I hissed quietly, slipping back out of the bush and back into the forest. Madison and Aaron came out just after me. I noticed a patrol forming just on the other side of the camp wall and began to run. Madison and Aaron quickly caught up and soon we were flying across the forest floor. Only when we made it back across the border is when we slowed to a brisk trot. We made it back to camp to be greeted by Washington and a returning battle training party. Aaron went to tell Washington what we had heard before pushing Madison towards the prey pile.
"You haven't eaten all day, Mads. I won't let you go to sleep without eaten something." Aaron said as they sat next to the pile. He licked his ear affectionately before passing him a mouse.
"Aww..." I sighed quietly before padding into the den I shared with a few others and flopped into my bed. Just as I was falling asleep, I felt Charles press up against me.
"Sweet dreams, Sammy." He murmured, rasping his tongue over my ear a few times.
Angelica's POV (Wow, shocker.)
I sighed heavily and rested my head on my paws. After being with my sister for forever, I never expected her to act this way over some boy. Sure, he was handsome, social, and had an amazing personality, but even that wouldn't cause me to act like that. At least, I think so. I looked over at Peggy who was flailing her paws around and Maria who was laughing at her antics. At least she's never had to feel this way. I closed my eyes, hoping to get some sleep and worry about my problems later on when suddenly, some cat burst through the camp entrance screeching, "Intruder!"
Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. I tried to make it longer, but I was busy and I didn't have enough time to finish it. So, I cut it short. Still, I think it's alright. Thanks for reading! -S
