Chapter 14
I swear, if one more person asks what I'm doing, I'm going to explode!! -S
Peggy's POV
"Hey, Evan," I ask the ginger tom limping around. He looks up at the sound of his name.
"Y-yeah?"
"Do you wanna join our group? The group consists of lots of cats who either have nowhere else to go or they have no family." Evan looked thoughtful for a moment.
"O-only if Connor comes t-too." He stuttered. "I-i mean, if you want to Connor. I-i could go without you." He mumbled the last part, so it was barely audible.
"It's fine. I'll come." Connor said, wrapping his tail over his paws. Evan's ears perked up. John simply sat nearby, not saying anything. I wasn't even sure if he was listening to the conversation. I walked over to him and poked him. He immediately jumped and looked in every direction. After relaxing his muscles, he licked one of his paws and drew it over his ear. I'll ask him about it later.
"Follow me you two." I called to the two toms. Connor was at Evan's side, making sure he didn't topple over from his new way of walking. Slowly but surely, the four of us made it back to camp. I told the rest of them to wait at the entrance while I got Washington to evaluate them.
John's POV
I thought I had a chance with him. Well, I guess I thought wrong. Every time I closed my eyes, all I saw was his stupid face. I sunk my claws into the ground in utter frustration. "A-are you a-alright, John?" Evan stuttered. I nodded and tried my best to relax. Evan sat down and licked his ruffled fur. A few seconds later, Peggy jumped from a bush with Washington on her tail. Evan yowled and jumped up. He landed gracefully on three paws and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Peggy! You nearly scared the living daylights out of him!" I said, trying not to laugh.
"Sorry, Ev." She giggled sheepishly. Evan nodded and sat back down.
"So, these are the cats you've been telling me about?" He asked, the question directed at Peggy. She nodded.
"This one fell out of a tree and this one said he found him. John insisted I help them, which I did and I thought they might want to join our group." She explained. Evan's tail tip twitched when Peggy said he fell out of the tree.
"What are your names?" Washington asked.
"I'm Connor Murphy." Connor said.
"A-and I'm Evan Hansen." Evan stuttered, cowering in fear of Washington. Washington let out a hearty laugh.
"There's no need to be afraid of me, kid. I won't hurt you." Washington sighed. Evan nodded vigorously and tried smoothing his fur yet again. "Do you want to join us?" Washington asked. "You'll need to be able to hunt and patrol borders every day." Connor and Evan both looked at each other.
Finally, Connor answered, "Alright, but what about Evan's paw?" Washington stifled a laugh.
"He'll have to remain in camp until Peggy says otherwise." Washington said. "I'm not going to force him to work so hard with that paw." Connor nodded, satisfied. Washington flicked his tail and Connor and Evan followed him side by side, pelts brushing.
"We need to get them together." Peggy sighs. Then, her face becomes more serious. "But we also need to talk."
"There's nothing to talk about, not one thing!" I spat before running blindly into the forest.
"John!" I hear Peggy call faintly, but I ignore it. I just kept running until I came to a stop underneath a tree. Why did you make me feel love for you!! I unsheathed my claws and ripped at the trunk of the tree. A large piece of bark fell off and I let out a loud screech of rage. I flung the piece of bark into the trees and stalk on. Suddenly, I hear the distant roar of thunder. Great. But I'm not going back now. I stalked onwards until I came to a stream. I lapped up some of the cool water and shake the droplets off my whiskers. I sat down and wrapped my tail over my paws. This is a nice place, I should come here more often.
Alex's POV
Eliza came bouncing back to me. She tried to lick my nose, but I pushed her away. She looked hurt and I didn't want to hurt her more, but I had to tell her the truth. "E-eliza, you didn't let me finish what I was saying. I was trying to say that I don't like you in that way a-and that I have my eyes on someone else." I said. She gave me a hard stare and her eyes brimmed with pain.
"I-i'm so sorry, Alex. Who's the lucky girl?"
"Actually, it's a guy and I'd rather keep it a secret." I told her, glad that she understood. Her fur suddenly stood on end.
"A-a guy!!" She hissed. "That's just wrong!! You're wrong, you fag!! I can't believe I ever fell for someone who was a fag!! You're unworthy of my love anyway." She snorted and padded towards the prey pile, picking up and mouse and settled in an unoccupied section of camp. That isn't the Eliza I once knew... A second later, Peggy came through the entrance.
"Hey, Alex." She spat my name with venom dripping from it.
"Listen, Pegs, it was a misunderstanding. I-i only love Eliza platonically." She gave me a hard glare before her gaze softened.
"Good. John is off sulking somewhere in the forest. I lost him. A bad storm is coming soon, so you'd better hurry." She informed me. I gave her a curt nod and pounded into the forest. I hate storms, but I won't let that stop me. I slowed down to a trot, calling John's name every few seconds. Just then, a bright flash of lightning flashed and turned everything white for a few seconds. I leaped upwards in fear and tried to relax. Then, the rain started pelting down. My fur was plastered to my sides and soaked through, but I still pressed on.
*Third Person*
Alexander walked closer and closer to the road, although he didn't realize it. The pelting rain masked all scents. John heard his name being called faintly, but because of the rain, he didn't know who was calling him and where the voice was coming from. He went close to the road and saw a car driving down it. Then he spotted Alex walking onto the road. "Alex!" John screeched and pelted towards him. The car came steadily closer to the brow tomcat. John ran so fast that it looked like he had wings. Will he make it to Alexander in time?
