Prologue
The sun faded behind the trees casting the twoleg nest with a golden haze. Mittens leaped up to the window staring out of the forest listening to the sounds of owls hooting in the trees. She stopped. The sound of her twoleg owners made her turn her head instantly. She spotted a little kid tottering along towards her; it turned its head and wobbled over grabbing the cat in its chubby arms. Hugging it tightly until Mittens could hardly breath. Meowing indignantly she struggled out the twoleg's grip, the kid began to cry. Oh great.
The twoleg's mother came into the room and talked to her child. Mittens took this rare moment to slunk out through the open window and jump onto the fence. She was starving, the poor cat hadn't been fed in ages and Mittens felt her tummy rumbling.
The moon was now high above the sky as she stared out into the woods in front of her stretching for miles. Then, she heard the familiar paw steps of Socks climbing up the fence behind her.
"Look what I found here," the cat exclaimed, "Mitten staring out into the forest like she always does. " But she just kept staring out ignoring what Socks had said.
"Have you ever wondered what's out there Socks?" The tortoiseshell shecat shook her head,
"No and I never will who cares what's out there, we are safe here in our cosy nests come on." Socks puts her tail on Mittens and leads her off the fence and down to the catflap.
"Get some sleep Mittens," the shecat trots off and disappears over the fence. But, Mittens didn't want to go inside and she didn't want to go back to her owners; when she comes back that twoleg kit might strangle her to death. "I'm just going to have to leave tomorrow I can't let myself starve I can learn to hunt, right?" She muttered to herself before reluctantly going through the catflap
