Inkpaw
Inkpaw woke with a start. She heard starange voices: Hollystar, Sharpclaw and... Cloudstripe?
"What's going on?" Asked Dapplepaw as Goldenpaw nudged her awake.
"Windclan." He answered. Inkpaw suspected that something was wrong. She felt tension and impatience hover in the air.
"Darkfall, you will take Inkpaw, Wildfire, Dapplepaw, Acornclaw, Whiskertail, Hazelstrike, and Fireye to Windclan. Hawkfang will go with you to help Windclan's medicine cat. Send an apprentice and a warrior if you need backup." Sharpclaw was explaining to Darkfall.
"Honeytail, you will tell Shadowclan, Riverclan, and Skyclan the situation. Take Willowstream, Bubbleblaze, Bluetail and Goldenpaw with you." Hollystar suggested and Honeytail nodded. Inkpaw followed Dapplepaw and Goldenpaw out of the apprentice den, and joined their patrols. As Darkfall' patrol headed towards the Windclan camp, Cloudstripe bounded ahead.
"Hurry!" She called over her shoulder. As the patrol was led into camp, Inkpaw saw cats everywhere! Windclan and another scent wafted through the air, along with the stench of blood. Inkpaw saw some of the other apprentices dodging in and out of the battle, fast as snakes. Inkpaw inspected the camp and made herself a target but as she crouched to attack, a snarling tabby knocked her off her paws. The tabby jumped onto her back and pinned Inkpaw to the ground. She struggled under the other cat's claws and then she remembered her battle training. She went as limp as prey and felt satisfaction as the weight on her back lifted. Then, using all her strength, Inkpaw jumped up and raked her claws across the tabby's nose. He yowled in pain and reared up to deliver another blow, but a cat appeared behind him and sliced along his spine. The tom screeched and whipped around to attack the other cat and she met his blows fiercely. Inkpaw watched the tabby's lashing tail and pounced, grasping the tip in her sharp teeth before quickly biting down as hard as she could. A yowl in her ear let her know that she and the other cat had succeeded. Inkpaw watched the tabby as he fled the camp, tail streaking behind him. As the apprentice turned around she gasped. Standing in front of Inkpaw was her mother: Shadowstripe of Windclan.
The older replica of Inkpaw touched her daughter's flank with her nose.
"Hello, Inkpaw. So good to see you. Would you take Moonkit to Thunderclan with you if... if anything happens?" Shadowstripe asked calmly despite the yowling and screeching around the two cats.
"Uhh, sure." Inkpaw answered awkwardly. Shadowstripe was Inkpaw's mother, but after Inkpaw was adopted by Thunderclan, Shadowstripe had one more kit so that she was never alone. But Shadowstripe was older then most queens and could easily die from a battle like this. Inkpaw looked at her paws. Her mother wanted her to look after her younger sister if Shadowstripe, well, yeah.
"Actually, I think you should just take her now, despite what happens to me. I don't think Windclan is the place for Moonkit." The dark she cat exclaimed.
"Well if she does come with us, I still need to ask Hollystar if she would be allowed to transfer Clans. It's not like anyone can just go from one Clan to another whenever they want." Inkpaw said.
"I understand. Just take her anyway. Hollystar would be mouse-brained to make a poor kit suffer from not having her sister. Or a mother." Shadowstripe added quietly at the end. "She's in the nursery." Inkpaw nodded and nuzzled her mother before dashing to the nursery, a couple fox lengths away. When she entered the damp den, a snarl echoed in her ears. As her eyes adjusted, the young she cat saw three queens huddled in the corner guarding their kits. Inkpaw gulped.
"I'm Inkpaw, from Thunderclan. Shadowstripe wants me to take Moonkit..." A squeal was heard and a tiny scrap of dark grey fur popped out from under one of the queens, Emberfrost. "Geez! It's so hot and fuzzy under there! Especially when you're sweating!" Emberfrost's whiskers twitched ever so slightly in amusement. Moonkit's enthusiasm matched her mother's. Inkpaw smiled at the yellow eyed kit that was bouncing around her like a mini tornado.
"Inkpaw!!" Moonkit exclaimed leaping onto the She cat's back, fastening her tiny paws on Inkpaw's scruff. "Take me to Thunderclan!" The kit said proudly as if she was the leader of a hunting patrol. Emberfrost's ear flicked back. "How are you planning to keep her safe on the way out?"
Inkpaw hadn't thought about that. Just then, Goldenpaw burst in.
"Need help?" He asked. Inkpaw sighed in relief.
"Sure. Can you make sure we get out safe?"
"Of course." Goldenpaw winked at Inkpaw and she rolled her eyes as Emberfrost muffled a loud giggle from Moonkit. Still in the corner, Skyshine smirked.
"Cute."
Goldenpaw smiled. "It's the least I could do." He turned around, kicked a rogue away from the nursery and turned back.
"Show off." Inkpaw mumbled and with Moonkit, followed Goldenpaw out of the den. Every time a rogue got anywhere near, Inkpaw freaked out until either Goldenpaw came in, ( to heroically save them,) or Moonkit let out a soundless gust of wind (that toxically smelled of rotting fish in a hole of mouse dung) and scared them away. (Or sent them coughing and spluttering until they fell over.) At least they made it out of Windclan safely. Once they were over the border in Thunderclan territory, Inkpaw felt safe again. She saw Goldenpaw shiver as a cold breeze flew past the three cats. Then Moonkit jumped, tail bushed and wide eyed. Inkpaw noticed that Goldenpaw stiffened as well. What is it? She wondered when an unfamiliar smell found its way to her nose.
Rogue. Inkpaw remembered the weird smell of the cats who invaded Windclan. But another smell was stronger than the stench of rogue - milk?
"Come on, follow me." Inkpaw whispered. Goldenpaw hissed, but let her lead them towards the smell. She shouldered through some bushes, then stopped. In front of Inkpaw cowered a very pale grey she cat with faded green eyes... and a very big belly. Inkpaw sucked in a breath knowing that this she cat was carrying kits. Unfortunately, Goldenpaw did not.
"Get off our land, rogue!" He snarled. The grey cat flinched and hissed at him. Goldenpaw was about to hurl himself at the She cat when Inkpaw stopped him.
"Goldenpaw!" She scolded. "She's bearing kits. Don't attack her, even if she's a rogue." Goldenpaw's tail twitched with frustration, but he stayed silent.
"Thank you." Inkpaw heard a whisper behind her and turned to look at the She cat.
"Sorry about him, what's your name?" She asked .
"Clover." The grey shape breathed.
"Your name is Clover." Said Inkpaw.
"Yes." Clover's voice got a bit stronger.
"Sooo... are you a rogue?"
"Yes - well, not anymore."
Inkpaw was a tiny bit relieved to hear that Clover was not a rogue anymore, unless this was a trap and all her evil friends came running out of the trees to ambush them.
"Who may the father be?" Goldenpaw suddenly slipped in. Clover opened then closed her mouth and Inkpaw sighed. Same old Goldenpaw.
"Goldenpaw, how many times have I told you, NOT to interrupt unless what you have to say is actually important." Goldenpaw flinched at his fellow apprentice's words. "Besides, how do you even change your character like that? First you are all angry and snarly, and then you act as if you've known Clover forever!" Goldenpaw's tail drooped.
"I was just trying to make a joke!" He said sadly, but when he raised his head, his eyes were full of hurt and frustration. "Why won't you just accept who I am?" Inkpaw thought she could see a tear falling down his face, but it was brief, as he turned and ran. Moonkit looked from Inkpaw to where Goldenpaw fled and sat down.
"He'll come back." Mewed Inkpaw. Surely Goldenpaw would find them when he felt like it. Moonkit stared at her as if her eyes could say something her mouth couldn't.
Inkpaw sighed. "We might as well take Clover to Thunderclan, who knows what a patrol would do if they found her." She glanced at the grey she cat and Moonkit bolted to Inkpaw's side.
"Inkpaw, what was Clover doing on your territory in the first place?" Moonkit whispered. A sudden suspicion weaved its way into Inkpaw's head.
"Yes, why are you on our territory?" Before Clover could answer, three cats burst into sight. Thankfully one of them was Goldenpaw, but the other two carried the scent of Windclan.
"Inkpaw!" Inkpaw recognized Mallowpaw by her rusty coat sprinting towards her. She was a Windclan apprentice that she had met many times at gatherings. The other cat wasn't Cherryheart, (Mallowpaw's mentor) the pale brown pelt behind Mallowpaw was Talltree.
"Greetings, Talltree, Mallowpaw," Inkpaw noticed large scratch marks and tufts of fur missing from the Windclan cats. "What brings you away from the battle?" But Inkpaw knee what Mallowpaw was going to say by the expression on the apprentice's face.
"Ravenstar thinks we're losing! We can't drive the rogues out of the camp! Most of the weaker ones ran away, but the ones that are left..." A small shudder passed over the russet she cat.
Talltree nodded gravely.
"We need more warriors. The rogues are plucking us off one by one, and the camp is littered with bodies!" Mallowpaw looked away.
"What?" Inkpaw asked. "What is it?"
Slowly, Mallowpaw raised her head to look Inkpaw in the eye.
"Shadowstripe is one of those bodies."
