Chapter 1

A/N- I apologize if it doesn't look quite as nice as usual I'm trying to type it on my phone. I'm anxiously awaiting your feedback this is my first time on here writing from more than just one cat's point of view.

Chapter 1

Morningstar was proud of her Clan.

It didn't matter that they were the smallest Clan by the lake. Leaf-bare affected WindClan the most, since they lived out in the open on the moor. ThunderClan lived in the forest, sheltered by trees from the harsh winds. And they had the greatest amount of warriors, since they were so accepting of rogues. As Morningstar recalled from the last Gathering, ThunderClan had allowed two rogues to join the Clan. Meanwhile, the warrior code called for cats outside of Clans to be chased from the territory and warned never to return.

As the WindClan leader's gaze scanned the camp, a white-furred she-cat crept out of camp, a wild look in her eyes like a kit trapped on a Thunderpath. She nearly leapt out of her fur as a voice asked, "Where are you going, Lilyscar?"

A pretty tortoiseshell she-cat was returning to camp with a rabbit and a mouse in her jaws. Her pale blue eyes blazed, clearly demanding an answer.

Lilyscar groaned inwardly, knowing that Hawkflight had surely already left his camp. The brave warrior was always early to their meetings. "He might be there by now," she murmured to herself.

The tortoiseshell she-cat tilted her head to one side. "What?"

"I said I'm going hunting." Lilyscar's heart was racing. "It's a beautiful day."

"Did I assign you to a patrol? I think I would remember if I had sent the leader's sister on a hunting patrol." A glimmer of suspicion danced in the WindClan deputy's eyes. "And if you are on a patrol, where are the other cats?"

Lilyscar raised her head defiantly, trying to hide her fear. "You didn't put me on a hunting patrol, Leafnose. I chose to go on my own instead of staying in camp."

Leafnose narrowed her eyes. "Well, there's a change of plans. You are coming back to camp with me. I have news to report to Morningstar."

Aspenshadow was terrified for her life and her Clanmates' lives.

She had been sorting herbs as usual, with help from her apprentice. Suddenly, a vision of the ShadowClan camp flashed before her eyes. Redstar, who was usually the most hesitant of the leaders to start battles and was the peacemaker between the Clans at Gatherings, had Lunarstar pinned to the ground by the camp entrance. Warriors of both Clans fought viciously and the grass beneath their paws was stained with blood. What scared her the most was that she saw her own unconscious body by her den, gray fur covered in blood.

The vision then faded and Aspenshadow collapsed to the ground, the screeches of battle still ringing in her ears. A voice whispered urgently, "This is the future unless you stop it. As it stands right now, one of the two leaders, either Redstar or your sister, will DIE before the battle ends. You must speak with ThunderClan and prevent this battle! It is unnecessary!"

"Aspenshadow! ASPENSHADOW! Are you okay?"

Aspenshadow stumbled out of the den, brushing past her apprentice, who looked bewildered.

The ShadowClan medicine cat looked around the camp, trying to calm herself. Everything was normal, at least for now. Goldenfur dropped a frog and a mouse on the fresh-kill pile. Berryclaw padded out of the elders den, yawning.

"Lunarstar! Come! I have received a sign from StarClan! We must go to ThunderClan!" Aspenshadow was already racing out of camp and into the pine forest. "Hurry!"

Her sister caught up with her, panting heavily. "Aspenshadow, slow down! You're running as fast as if there is a badger chasing you! I can't just leave camp randomly like this! I don't even know what this sign is!"

Aspenshadow slowed to a trot, to Lunarstar's relief. "There's no time to explain! And Nightwhisper can take care of the camp while you're gone. She's a good deputy."

They reached the border. Lunarstar halted but Aspenshadow pushed her across.

"Now Aspenshadow..."

Aspenshadow stiffened. "Be quiet! I smell ThunderClan!"

Redstar was understandably reluctant to take Lunarstar to the camp. The two cats had never gotten along well. As apprentices at a Gathering, both of them were quick to decide that the other was annoying.

Lunarstar thought Redstar was too arrogant. Redstar thought Lunarstar was too self-centered. So obviously the ThunderClan leader wasn't too fond of the idea of taking her enemy to the heart of her territory.

But Redstar hated battles more than she hated Lunarstar, and determined that it wasn't worth the bloodshed it might cause to drive the ShadowClan leader and medicine cat out of ThunderClan territory.

What bothered her more was the rogue. There was a cold gleam in the flame-colored she-cat's eyes and the many scars on her pelt proved that this cat had fought before. Even covered in blood, exhausted, and having been beaten by Birchpaw, this rogue had an air of confidence and superiority about her that unnerved Redstar. The ThunderClan leader had a bad feeling about bringing her to the camp. A feeling that she would cause nothing but trouble.

Meanwhile, the ShadowClan medicine cat apprentice walked by the border, searching for herbs. She was still confused by her mentor's disappearance. After all, any cat would be startled if they saw a Clanmate abruptly collapse and then rush out of the camp with no explanation. Surely there was a reason for her sudden departure.

She had that strange feeling that she was being watched. Goldenfur, one of the Clan's senior warriors, had volunteered to accompany her. She had rejected his offer but was starting to regret it.

Oblivious to the intruders being escorted to the stone hollow at that moment, a dark gray ThunderClan tom was hunting alone by the ShadowClan border. He saw the ShadowClan medicine cat apprentice padding along nearby on the opposite side of the scent marks. Lost in thought, she wandered over the border. The tom crept closer, waiting to pounce as if she were a piece of prey. One more step and then...

The ThunderClan warrior leapt at her and landed on her back. She squeaked in surprise as he planted a heavy paw on her neck, pinning her to the ground. "What are you doing on ThunderClan territory?" the tom growled.

Fear glistened in the apprentice's eyes. "You-you're on ShadowClan territory!"

"Are you sure about that?" The warrior's whiskers twitched with amusement. "Look behind you, mouse-brain. The border is back there."

For the first time, the medicine cat apprentice seemed to realize that she actually was on ThunderClan territory. "Mossfur, please! I crossed the border accidentally! I swear by StarClan I didn't know that I was on your land."

Mossfur narrowed his eyes. "That's no excuse. The warrior code says I must teach you a lesson. Say good-bye!"
