Chapter 7

"And so Sunpaw died, screeching his head off about a cat name Snowybreath." Bluepaw finished. "And now, Your Clanmates want revenge on my family and friends. And..." No. These cats have heard enough horrible things about their family and friends. They don't need to know that even one of them could be a murderer. That would drive them apart.
"Larkfoot, I was not told that this youngster dragged us out here for nothing!"Patchtail grumbled, dropping his rabbit.
"I wanna go home!" Sootkit cried. "I miss mommy!" Birchpaw turned towards Sootkit to look into his eyes.
"Your mother would not want you to see her now. She is devastated with your brothers death. But please, everyone! Calm down and follow me!" He sprinted up a small hill in seconds, excited to go back to the place they had come from, and so that the friends could know of Mossdream's .... mystery death.

"Oak!" Luna meowed, sprinting around him in a cloud of black. "Cats are here. Cats. Lots of cats. Big cats. Medium cats. And a little cat. And Birchpaw and Blue! And-"
"What?" Blue. She could be right here. I can tell her..
"Oak?" What is with the names today? He thought angrily. Until he looked up the hill, that is. Then he purred as Blue ran down the hill to entwined her tail with his.
"I thought you would never come back." He said.
"I would run a million tail lengths to be with you." She replied.
"Who is that?"
"Why are we here?"
"Get away from me, rouge!"
"Are they mates?"
"Hush, Sootkit!"
She brought company. Oak looked at the swarm of cats crawling into the camp. A black kit leaped out of an older cats paws to peer at his reflection in a shiny hard barrel. A puzzled she-cat watched in fascination as Blackie pushed a clear flower holder over into the pile of junk and trash. Yet another elder hissed as Luna pranced around her, meowing, "Kitties, Kitties! Cats and kits and Kittypets and Rouges! What are you?"
Birchpaw finally had to hiss, "Stop being mouse brains! Thank you. This is Oak, and he and his cats will shelter us if they choose to."
"We must tell him all," Warned Patchtail. "Can't leave anything out for the young'un."
"You speak funny still!" Sootkit meowed.
Chaos. This is Madness. But he listened to Blue's bored reenactment of the events that had befallen these cats, and knew he must help them in every way he could. He even asked Birchpaw to explain to him Clan life, for his plan would not succeed without it. It sounds hard, but it would keep every cat safe. Keeping his older calling for announcements, he yowled, " All cats old enough to move twoleg rubbish can join me for a meeting!" Birchpaw looks confused. He thought with satisfaction. He told Oak About the clan stuff, and would you look at that, he had it already. As Coconut jumped out of a broken down monster where he sheltered from the new change in weather, Blackie gave his clear holder a final push before joining the crowd around Oak. Luna joined him, leaping into the air and not listening to a word anyone said. Blackie finally calmed her down, and their pelts melted together like a dark night on the sunny day, only told apart by the two pairs of green eyes that watched silently.
"These cats need our help," Oak started. "For unexplained reasons, their friends and clan have turned upon them. They believe we are responsible for the murder of their medicine cat, Moss-"
"Hello, Friends."
"Mossdream!" Ivyfoot gasped. "Youre alive!"
"Yes, Ivyfoot, it is a wonderful thing, but listen to Oak before turning your attention to me."
"Therefore," Oak spoke louder over their chatter, " we must prepare for the worst. I must introduce you to Clan life." None of the original cats protested, but whether out of respect and fear of Oak or actual agreement he was unsure.
Birchpaw stood up beside Oak. "First, we all must join together. One way to do that is to have a clan name. The forest clans are named after the founders, so who is the founder here?" Oak nodded his head.
"Me."
"All in favor of naming this establishment OakClan, say I."
"I." Said Coconut. " We were all once loners and kittypet, us cats. Oak brought us together and sheltered us in this twoleg rubbishplace." But the wiry tom was the only one to speak, and so they continued.
"I doubt anyone here was this to be named TwolegClan or DirtClan, so let's continue with original names. Any suggestions?"
"Ooh! Oooh!" Sootkit raised his tail up high into the air confidently. "SootClan."
Everyone purred. Oak thought to himself, cocky, but brave and used to the spotlight. He would make a fine apprentice, or whatever Birchpaw called them.
"Any.. other suggestions?" Birchpaw managed to say. Every cat sat thoughtfully, and finally Ivyfoot spoke.
"How about WolfClan?" She meowed. "We are all, in our ways, lone wolves forming a pack."
"It sounds lovely," Larkfoot commented, "But we are not wolves, no dear, we are cats. Independent cats, who have freedom and sympathy for cats who have not been proven guilty. We should be called JusticeClan."
After hours of debating whether the clan should be called WolfClan or JusticClan or SootClan, Oak could not help shouting,
"How about BranchClan?" He yowled. "It combines the strength and my namesake , oaks, and our strength and loyalty to the ones we love. It also shows how we support each other as a tree branch supports a cats weight, and how we have come far from out roots to get here."
Blue had come up next to him, and meowed her agreement. "It sounds perfect!" Every cat then expressed their agreement quite loudly.
"Now, we need names." Oak said." First of all, I have been told by Blue and Birchpaw that since I am leader, I should be named Oakstar. Any objections?" The newly formed BranchClan was silent. Coconut's eyes shown with pride and admiration. This is pretty easy.
"So now, those of you who do not have names, please step forward." A couple cats Oak had not had the time to introduce Birchpaw , but all of the cats looked excited and a tad bit scared, as if he would claw their names onto them with his claws. The thought amused him as he named his cats one by one.
"I, Oakstar, give this young cat Coconut his official name, Rootwhisker." Rootwhisker rested his head on Oakstar's shoulder and whispered, "Thank you, Oakstar."
"Blue?" He asked for next. She stepped forward, " I was given a name while I lived with the Clan of Rivers. It was Bluefeather, and so I shall remain." Bluefeather clearly didn't trust him with the naming thing after Rootwhisker.
Hurt, Oakstar rushed on, " I hearby give the cat Luna her new name of Moonbright." Moonbright danced around and meowed, "Moonbright. Sounds rather pretty."

"Blackie, I hearby give you the new name Blacksparrow."

"Smoke, I give you the name Featherwind."

"Creampuff, I give you the name Yellowflower, and finally Jasmine, I give you the name Splashheart."
Birchpaw nodded with approval. He then spoke privately to Oakstar, "Think wisely, leader. You now have cats at your command as you never did before. Since you have the dens sorted out, and you have Mossdream as a medicine cat, I think we can move on to more sensitive subjects I'm sure my cats can teach you and yours: StarClan."
"I am ready, young Birchpaw. Ready for the seasons to come and the battles that follow."
"I hope so, Oak, or all these cats will die."
