Chapter Twelve: It Was You

Squirrelflight had already left the camp to go to the training hollow. I had convinced her that it would be best if she left first because we didn't want to talk to each other close to camp and have other cats overhear.

I climbed the Highledge and entered Bramblestar's den. "Hey Bramblestar, where's Squirrelflight?"

The dark brown tabby thought for a moment. "I don't know. She should be in camp."

"Well I can't find her and I'm sure she'll want to put me on another stupid patrol this afternoon," I meowed. "So can you tell her I'm going to collect some marigold for Jayfeather? His supply is running low so he asked me to get some."

Bramblestar, being the gullible fool that he was, believed me. "Of course. Do you want me to get Molepaw or Cherrypaw to help you?"

I shook my head, already backing out of the den. "No, I'm good, but thanks anyways. Bye, Bramblestar!"

You're a mouse-brain, Bramblestar. The Clan needs someone intelligent leading them. I guess I have to add you to my list of cats to kill. I should just kill half of the Clan I suppose; they're useless.

I left the den just in time to see Millie hurrying out of Jayfeather's den and rolled my eyes in disgust. Perhaps it's not completely Dovewing's fault I'm a murderer. If I fell off a cliff and died, Millie would probably say, "I don't have time for that right now! I'm busy feeling sorry for myself and Briarlight!"

Millie grabbed a mouse from the fresh-kill pile and then scurried back to her precious Briarlight, her only kit. I guess Bramblestar has a little longer to live. I will kill Millie, bury her body on WindClan territory, and then nobody will ever know what happened to her. No, actually, I have a better idea. I will tell Bramblestar that she told me she hates being a warrior and she decided to return to kittypet life. That will be the equivalent of murdering Graystripe so I don't have to worry about him. Maybe that weak, dumb old tom will finally retire to the elders den then.

I unsheathed my claws as I watched her disappear inside the den. You will be the next one to go.

I padded out of camp and found Squirrelflight waiting in the training hollow. I raced down the slope and skidded to a halt. "What did you want to talk to me about?"

Squirrelflight sighed. "Not here. Let's go to the half-bridge by the ShadowClan border."

I followed her, wondering if she knew my secret. We arrived at the half-bridge a little after sunhigh. The ginger she-cat looked into my eyes for a moment, saying nothing.

Being impatient as I was, I finally spoke. "Well? Stop wasting my time and speak!"

"How do you feel about Dovewing being exiled from the Clan?" Squirrelflight shifted on her paws, seeming awkward. "Are you upset? I want to make sure you're okay."

"Why do you care?" I snapped. "Are you my mother? I didn't think so! Then stop acting like it!"

Squirrelflight seemed taken aback. "Calm down, Bumblestripe, I'm trying to help you. I guess you aren't willing to talk about Dovewing. So what do you think about Icecloud's murder?"

I gave a bitter laugh. "You don't want to know."

"Yes, I do. C'mon tell me!" Squirrelflight insisted.

Do I really want to kill her right now? "Well, if you really want to know, you'll have to look up as far as you can and stare at the sky until I tell you to look back at me."

Squirrelflight looked confused but she did as I said. I inched closer, unsheathing my claws.

I raised a paw. "Now close your eyes and think about what the sky looks like today. Anything that stands out. Keep thinking about it until I say to open your eyes and then tell me what you thought."

Squirrelflight once again followed my instructions. "Somehow, I think this has nothing to do with your thoughts on Icecloud's death."

I chuckled. "Oh yes it does. You'll see what I mean in a moment."

I slashed my claws across her throat in one swift strike. Her legs buckled beneath her and a faint screech escaped her mouth. I watched as her legs jerked convulsively and blood poured out of the fatal gash in her neck.

"Now do you see what I mean?" I sneered, watching her eyes widen as a truth suddenly dawned on her.

"It...was...y-you..." she choked out, her voice faint and barely audible.

"Of course it was," I purred.
