Chapter Thirteen: Blaming ShadowClan
I watched as her flanks fell still. I glanced across the border, which we were right next to, and wondered if I should hide the body in ShadowClan territory. But then, I got a better idea. Make it seem like ShadowClan killed the deputy, and then start a war with them. I could be able to accidentally-on-purpose kill Tigerheart and make Dovewing's life even more of a nightmare, since I had no doubt she had sought refuge in her forbidden lover's Clan. Perhaps I would finish her off.
I dragged her across the ground by the scruff and rolled her lifeless body in the ShadowClan scent, thoroughly covering her with the smell of our enemies. I left the body by the half-bridge for the dawn patrol to find.
I crossed over the abandoned Twoleg path and stopped at the stream just beyond it. I washed my paws and then sniffed at my fur to make sure there were no traces of Squirrelflight or ShadowClan. I padded back towards camp.
Before entering the stone hollow, I grabbed a few buds of marigold just in case Bramblestar saw me. The dark brown tabby was eating a mouse by the thorn tunnel, and looked up as I emerged into the hollow. I was hardly able to meet his amber eyes because I was worried he'd see in my eyes that I had murdered ThunderClan's deputy.
"That took a while, Bumblestripe. Where were you?" Bramblestar didn't look too suspicious, but I still felt a pang of worry.
"Fetching the marigold. I accidentally grabbed the wrong herb and I didn't realize it until I was almost back here," I lied.
Bramblestar nodded. "Oh, okay. Well, go leave that in the medicine cat den. Jayfeather's out collecting some catmint and tansy for leaf-bare from the abandoned Twoleg nest, but I'm sure he will thank you when he returns.
Bramblestar is such a fool. First of all, he didn't even ask what the "wrong herb" was. He's such a gullible mouse-brain. And does he really think Jayfeather would ever thank anyone for anything? He's the grumpiest medicine cat ever to exist!
I dropped the herbs at the entrance to the den. Jayfeather wouldn't even know who brought them. I stepped back out into the clearing, watching the sunset that was turning the sky orange and pink. A few dark gray clouds were inching their way towards WindClan territory, and would probably bring rain to the moor this evening.
I thought of Squirrelflight's lifeless body by the half-bridge, anticipating the war tomorrow would bring. "I hope you enjoy this, Tigerheart."
Tigerheart POV
Littlecloud listened to see if she was still breathing. "She's alive but barely. She's suffered a lot of blood loss and I'm not sure if she is going to make it. It's pretty clear she got attacked by something or someone. Did you do this to her?"
I was horrified. I would never do this to her! I would prefer that I was killed by whoever hurt her than having to watch her suffer. I would do anything to protect her, but I had failed to keep her safe. If she died, it would be my fault. I didn't want to live at all without her. "No, I just found her by the border and decided to bring her back to you."
I silently said, Please save her Littlecloud. Please.
Oh StarClan, don't take her away from me.
I tried to get some rest in the warriors den, but I was certain that I wouldn't be able to fall asleep so I decided to just pretend that I was asleep.
The next thing I knew, I was waking to yowls of alarm.
I scrambled out of my nest and hurried out of the den to see Snowbird and Ratscar escorting Rosepetal into camp.
Blackstar stormed out of his den to see what the commotion was about and narrowed his eyes when he saw the ThunderClan she-cat. "What are you doing here?"
Rosepetal met his gaze. "There's a murderer on the loose. She killed one of ThunderClan's brave and loyal warriors. We won't forget Icecloud."
I blinked in surprise. Icecloud was killed? Who would kill her or have any reason to? Did they hurt Dovewing too?
"Who's the murderer?" Blackstar asked the question I was thinking.
Maybe it's Whitewing. She and Icecloud never liked each other if I remember correctly. But why would she hurt her own daughter if the murderer was who nearly killed Dovewing? Did they get into a fight or something? But honestly, I can't picture a mother trying to murder her own kit. Perhaps it was Ivypool? She used to train in the Dark Forest; I know because I saw her there. And she's always been jealous of her sister.
I never expected her reply. "Dovewing."
