Chapter Sixteen: At ShadowClan's Camp

This is it

Bramblestar raced through the forest towards ShadowClan. Hatred and grief had to have been giving him energy. His paws caught on a few roots but he continued on even though he was noticeably limping. He was pulling ahead of us, as the rest of his tiny battle patrol were trying to avoid tripping, navigating a safer path through the woods.

"Bramblestar!" Foxleap called, panting. "Wait up!"

He stopped with reluctance. I examined his paws and noticed blood oozing from a fresh cut on his front right leg.

Lionblaze seemed hesitant. "Please slow down, Bramblestar? And let's stay here for a moment so we can catch our breath?"

Bramblestar waited for all of about five heartbeats. "Okay, let's go. C'mon!"

There was this strange sense of urgency about him, as if he was on an important mission. He just couldn't see that he was a piece, a toy perhaps, in another cat's game. No, what a poor analogy for his circumstances...perhaps Bramblestar could be compared to a piece of prey, a mouse maybe, being stalked by a unseen predator. The mouse doesn't see the hunter until claws sink into its neck and it's gone.

I am the hunter, stalking the prey. Wise enough to know that I need to bide my time, but also aware that I couldn't wait too long. The timing has to be just right. The mouse must never hear, feel, scent, or see me coming with unsheathed claws. And if I did this right, the possibilities were endless. Especially considering that Bramblestar hadn't appointed a deputy before he left.

The thought of me, a murderer, leading ThunderClan...things would change and things would change very quickly. Kindness would be an elder's tale for kits, if I let the elders live. I would rule over the whole forest, and I would have a long reign. Anyone who disobeyed me would be killed mercilessly without warning.

We were there before I knew it. Bramblestar marched straight into their camp. I made a hasty decision.

I dove into some bushes right outside of the camp. The other cats didn't notice my absence and I watched as they all hesitated before following their leader.

Perhaps Bramblestar is even crazier than I am.

Blackstar hurried out of his den, looking genuinely surprised but not hostile. Of course he was surprised, it's not like ShadowClan actually killed Squirrelflight. "Hello, Bramblestar. What are you doing here?"

Suddenly, I spotted a lifeless body by the warriors den. Gray fur neatly groomed. Legs folded up against her stomach. Eyes shut, flanks still.

It could've been any cat, but I knew somehow with complete certainty that it was Dovewing, even from this far away.

"It's what you deserved," I hissed, hoping she heard me from StarClan. "I don't regret it at all."

It was true. How did I ever love her? She was a mouse-brained traitor who deserved death. Justice reigns supreme. I delivered the punishment that she needed. I'm glad I did. I have no regrets about any of my actions.

I'd already decided Blossomfall will be my deputy when, not if, when I became leader. My sister was the only cat I might not have hated that day.

Meanwhile, in the ShadowClan camp, Bramblestar's neck fur was bristling. "You know what this is about, you murdering fox-hearts!"

Blackstar was taken aback and looked insulted. "What? Us, murderers? ThunderClan is the one with murderers in its midst!"

He doesn't know how right he is about that one.

"We found your scent on her body!" Bramblestar roared.

"What are you..." Blackstar broke off as Bramblestar crashed into him, barreling him over and preparing for the death blow.

It was over before it started. Olivenose leapt at Bramblestar as Ratscar clawed at his back. The other three ThunderClan warriors desperately flung themselves into battle, trying to protect their leader. They were swarmed by a multitude of ShadowClan warriors and vanished under a bunch of dark pelts.

I sat back and watched from my hiding place. Now it was time to return to my camp and tell the Clan I was the only one to escape. I wouldn't have to do anything for Bramblestar to die.

I couldn't believe or comprehend what I saw next.
