Chapter Six: Rejection

? POV

When I woke, my legs felt sore. I groaned, feeling slightly more rested, and hauled myself to my feet. Dried blood stained my left hindleg. Upon closer inspection I saw a gash on the leg, a jagged wound that revealed pale pink skin. I hadn't even noticed it earlier.

I washed my paws in the lake, groomed my matted fur, and tried to ignore my growling stomach. I estimated that I had been unconscious for about three days by the hunger I felt gnawing at my stomach. That explained why I felt light-headed and weaker than usual.

I traveled through ThunderClan territory. While I passed the abandoned Twoleg nest where Jayfeather collected his herbs, I heard thundering footsteps rapidly approaching. I dove into a nearby bush just as Molewhisker appeared, leading a patrol which consisted of his sister Cherrystripe and Whitewing.

Whitewing sniffed the air. "I smell a cat. It was here very recently; the scent is fresh."

Molewhisker waved his tail dismissively. "Just another rogue passing through. It's gone now. It's nothing to worry about. Let's just move on."

Mouse-brains. I clamped my teeth down on a branch to stifle my laughter. I felt something tickle my nose. It seemed a leaf had brushed it. I felt a small itch inside my nostrils, and I shook my head to try and solve the problem. It only grew worse. I involuntarily sucked in a deep breath and then sneezed loudly.

Molewhisker, who was padding off, paused and spun around. "Did you hear that?"

They walked back towards me. I wriggled my way out of the bush on the other side, and the patrol noticed the rustling of the branches. "That way!"

With the patrol chasing after me, likely tracking me by my scent, I had no choice but to run despite my aching legs. I reached the border quickly, and fortunately they didn't follow me past the scent line. I was grateful to arrive at my den unscathed.

The rest of the day was uneventful. I slept peacefully beneath a moon that was nearly full.

I woke to a violent coughing fit passing through my body.

The warning signs of a cold. Just perfect. It would take at least a moon before I would be able to attack Blossomstar now. Two moons if I planned on waiting until I had fully regained my strength.

But I would come. Blossomstar should watch her back carefully. She never knows when I might strike.

Blossomfall POV

Dreams- Flashback

Briarpaw and I had just gotten into a dispute. Her words rang in my ears.

Nobody will ever like a she-cat like you. You're ugly.

I laid my head on my paws and sighed miserably. Foxleap came and sat by me. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," I snapped.

He tried to meet my eyes but I looked away, intentionally avoiding his gaze. "It's clearly not 'nothing.' You wouldn't be moping around the camp if..."

"JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!"

He flinched as if I had raked my claws across his face and moved away from me, but was still close enough to make me uncomfortable.

I closed my eyes and allowed my thoughts to race around my head. All I could see was Briarpaw's expression of utter contempt and all I could hear was her sneering voice echoing through my mind. "She's right," I muttered to myself. "Nobody will ever think I'm pretty."

I hadn't meant for Foxleap to overhear, but apparently he had. "I-I do."

I rolled my eyes. "You're just saying that."

Foxleap shook his head. "N-no. I-I think you have gorgeous eyes. I like you a lot, Blossompaw. Can we get to know each other better? Can you please stop pushing everybody away, and let me be your friend?"

I surprised both of us, I think, when I burst out laughing. "I don't have time for foolish toms. Why don't you find someone your own age to moon over?"

"Please," he begged me, his eyes sending me a silent plea as well.

"No, Foxleap. I have my eyes on someone." I didn't, but what he didn't know didn't hurt him. "And it certainly isn't you!"

Hurt shone in his gaze. "I thought you were better than this. I never thought you would be so cruel and heartless and..."

I chuckled. "Well, I am. So deal with it. I'm sure there's a she-cat in this Clan who is mouse-brained enough to put up with you."

His eyes hardened, and the pain transformed into anger. "There is. I should've known that any other cat would be a better choice then you. You're pathetic."

I woke up with a jolt. I had forgotten about that. I regretted what I said to him back then. And if I could take it back...I would.

"I'm pathetic," I whispered to myself, echoing Foxleap's words of wisdom from long ago.
