Chapter two
River hungrily gulped down his thrush, the juicy meat satisfying his past hunger. Every so often they wouldn't bring back any freshkill, and they would go a few days without anything to eat. But new warm weather has brought back prey and given them plenty to stuff themselves with.
Rain was sitting next to Rose, his pelt was fluffed up to make himself look bigger. Rose purred as she saw how fluffy Rain looked, but she continued to eat her squirrel, which was coincidentally Rain's favorite, and didn't say a word.
Tide and Wave ate together, they always had a strong relationship, but their names emplied it since waves and tides both belong to the ocean. They both control water, Tide controls where small amounts of water go and Wave controls where large amounts of water go.
River watched as Lily sat in a corner and looked off into the distance, she seemed sad, or as if she longed for something. When River caught her eye he immediately looked away, upset that he got himself caught staring. But Lily didn't seem to mind, she just sighed and went back to looking off into no where specifically, until her eyes suddenly landed on a small stream and she watched the tiny waves splash about. Something about the way that she looked at the water made River feel calm and at ease, he felt less tight and more relaxed as he watched her muzzle form a small smile, and the way her green eyes sparkled.
After everyone was done eating it was time for some talking, so River yowled and Rain gathered everyone up. Rain and Rose sat close together while Tide and Wave sat nearby and Lily watched from a short distance. "Who wants to ask the first question?" River looked around until he saw Lily with a raised paw, "No need to be shy. Just ask. My brothers and I would love to answer any questions." he encouraged Lily, who glared at him for assuming she was being shy. "Who are you? All of you." She clarified, "I'm River. These are my identical brothers, Rain, Tide, and Wave." River pointed to each of his brothers with his tail as he called their names. "Okay. So why are you here?" She continued, "We've lived here since we were kits. Our mother left us during a blizzard and never came back." River puffed out his chest with pride at how he manager to survive without an adult for so long. "How old are you?" Lily asked, "I'm 8 moons old. My brothers are all 7 moons old." River smirked, "So you're the oldest?" Rose quietly asked. River turned to her, "Yes. I'm the oldest." He said, Rose shied away as her cheeks glowed a light pink color, this made Rain growl a bit. River was surprised, it seemed his brother had a crush on the she-cat, "Yes well, my brother Rain is the bravest and best at following scents." he made Rose turn her attention back to Rain, which made him puff out his chest in pride. Lily growled, "I'm all out of questions." she finished, Rose sat up a little straighter after, "Can I ask a question?" she looked around. River nodded, "You just did. But go ahead." River smirked. "Does Rain have a mate?" she asked quickly and hid her head after she finished asking. Rain's eyes widened, "Do you see any other she-cats?" he asked her, Rose shook her head, "Well I don't suppose I have one then." He nudged her, Rose poked her head out a bit and smiled. River ignored then, Lily looked curious and tilted her head. Tide raised a paw, "I have a question for you she-cats. How long will you be staying in our camp?" Tide looked a little anxious to hear the answer, Lily looked thoughtful before answering, "I don't know." she finally stated. River perked his ears, he thought he just heard Rain wish they would stay forever, but he must have water I his ears if he thought her heard that. River piped up, "You can stay as long as you need. I'll have Wave and Rain make some nests for you to sleep in, and I'll have Tide fix up a nice den." he stated and his brothers went to work..
River watched as Rain kept glancing at Rose, who was glancing at him, and every so often they would make eye contact, which made River chuckle when they looked away embarrassed. River didn't get embarrassed, he just got disappointed in himself, and that was what made him a good leader.
When it was about dusk, Tide and Wave and Rain had finished making the sleeping quarters for the she-cats. River inspected it, the walls were firm and draft free, and the nests were as soft as sheep's wool. The sky started to dim, so River went over to Lily, "Follow me. I want to show you something." Lily hesitantly followed River. They went past a broken tree, a big boulder, and a few big Berry bushes before they got to a grassy hill where the trees broke off. River led Lily to the edge and sat down, "Watch." get pointed to the sky with his tail. The sky turned into an ombre of orange, pinks, purples, blues, and yellows. Lily gasped at the sudden colors, "It's lovely. But I don't get impressed easily. Not as easily as my sister. Anyway, why don't you tell your brother Rain that Rose would love him if he showed her this." Lily turned around, her tail gently brushing against River's muzzle as she walked by, "Goodnight River." she purred and disappeared into the darkening forest. River felt disappointed, he had failed in trying to impress this new she-cat, so he followed the trail back to camp. Peaking into the she-cats' new den, he saw Lily's flank rise and fall in the steady rythm of sleep, Rose however was laying on her back with her tail touching her nose as she softly snored. Exhausted, River went to his den where his warm and comfy nests was, he curled up into the moss next to his brothers and slowly drifted to sleep. It was a long day, and the next would be even longer and more exhausting.
(Chapters will usually last a full day unless it is special or a dream.)
