My eyes widened as I snapped back from unconsciousness. My leg still had a painful ache, and I had no idea where I was.
Beams of sunlight sliced through the air, blinding my visions. Hearing and smell were my only available senses. Conversations erupted around me, not a single voice familiar. I smelled not my beloved ThunderClan, but the swift WindClan.
A cold horror chilled through bones.
I was in an enemy camp, a pitiful kit in a world strange and dangerous. My fear scent advised the others that I'm already scared as can be. Why was I here? Why did they bring me into open area?
Would they hurt me? Wait. They couldn't, all was in the Warrior Code! Relieved realization tingled my paws as I felt a tad bit safer.
But they could still provoke me, still make me blurt out all the secrets of ThunderClan I know, still make me reveal ThunderClan's weakness!
I clamped my mouth tightly shut, my fur spiking up, my eyes wide, nervous, still boldly blue with desperation.
I curled into a ball, closed my eyes, and pretended I'd never wakened. Best they think I'm unconscious before something bad happens. And as my vision blacked, I felt suddenly tired, my head droopy, and I went into the world of oblivion for real.
When I awoke, a cat gazed sharply at me, it's fur dappled in starlight. Twinkling like a hundred dewdrops in sunlight, it lowered its head.
"Do you know who I am?" Its voice was deep, holding in secrets no living cat knows. Wisdom glittered in its eyes.
I looked at its dark pelt. I tried to remember, thinking of the right name. "Ooh! I know! You must be Squirrelstar!"
The cat shook it's head, it's whiskers twitching in amusement. "StarClan no! That's my mate you're referring to. My name is Bramblestar, the leader after Firestar. I have a long story about my past."
I looked at him curiously. "Firestar? The one who defeated the Dark Forest right?"
"Yes, the legend, once my mentor." I stared in shock.
"He was your mentor? Wow! How old are the clans?" I whispered, my eyes glowing.
"Generations. Countless of them. Only the greatest are remembered," he answered.
"Are you one of the greatest?" I asked as his pelt shone again against the light radiating softly.
"Well, see, after I realized the capability of my father, Tigerstar, who killed Firestar,I felt I was endangering my clan. I thought it wasn't safe for me to lead ThunderClan, and seven lives left, I left, knowing that my mate would ensure my clan mates are safe. But, it was a mistake."
I was listening keenly now.
"Once I left, I joined the Tribe, but I was kicked out once I revealed who I was," he murmured sadly.
"Where did you go next," I asked. I felt sympathy as he lead on the story of his bad idea. I shuddered, imagining if this was me living that kind of a horrible ending.
"Well, I met a rogue after that, Blade, and he was no friend. He was the leader of this rogue clan, BloodClan. They wanted to kill me, but since I had seven lives, I came back to life, and assumed I was some sort of immortal cat. There I dared not to say my father's identity," he meowed, his eyes glazed as he looking into endlessness, right through me.
"What did you do there?" I squeaked. "I mean, you must have been bored! And why did you even let Blade try to murder you?"
Bramblestar shook his head. "Blade is a lier. He told me he was my friend. I had to trust him, he offered food and shelter. But he betrayed me, and attacked me at the camp."
The Tom sighed. He looked up at the stars. "And they imprisoned me with these twoleg vines around my neck. I died strong from age and too many scars. My spirit came to StarClan because I always believed in them, even though their skies did not cover those above me."
"Wow! That's some big mistake you got there!" I gasped.
"But, there's something else too. See, I was never going to turn ambitious and evil like my father. It's not even my father's fault. His mentor was cruel. Thistleclaw was his name. He taught him to be full of malice and brutality. But my mentor is good throughout."
"Oh, so you were like any ordinary cat then. What about Squrrelstar then?" I asked.
"My loyal mate. Our kits were Goldleaf and Silvermoon, or Silverstar now. See, Squirrelstar was too old and weak to become ThunderClan's leader. She acted like StarClan granted her nine lives."
"So when she died, she was really Squirrelflight with one life?" I mewled, stunned.
"Yeah, the wound was rather minor to be able to wipe out nine lives at the same time. All the medicine cats know that. But it's not useful to tell everyone. You know, some things are meant to be kept a secret, for the good of the clans," he explained. "Do you get that?"
"Yes, I think I understand."
"Good, you will need this kind of knowledge one day," Bramblestar confirmed, his eyes not revealing everything.
"W-w-why w-would I-I-I need to know a-all of t-these t-thing?" I whimpered nervously.
"Relax little one. When the time comes, I know you will be alright. StarClan always guides your paw steps, but that doesn't mean you won't get injured. You are still a warrior cat, and all cats get hurt and die."
I don't want to die. That's for sure. "That makes it sound like I have a destiny to fulfill...?" I didn't understand anything.
"You and your brother are destined for greatness. Like Lionblaze and Dovewing, the power of stars are in your paws," he replied. "But greater."
My eyes widen. "So then-"
"Shh... Little one, we can't say anything else. Our time is up."
Bramblestar started to fade. "But-but-"
StarClan started to fade as I struggled to remain there, to seek more answers.
But it was too late. I awoke in WindClan.
