Chapter Four Icepaw
I stared at the stretch of green rolling hills washed with beams of sweet golden sunlight. The hills were so majestic and ever going. Beside, a fresh stream trickled down with little fish darting about, catching the rays of the sun. A cool breeze went by, buffeting my thick white fur.
Squinting my eyes, I could see faint dots running about. Probably those fast things cats call rabbits. A party of cats chased after with great speed. Their jaws snapped at the bunnies as the hunt ended. I never saw any cat so fast! I smiled in admiration. Then the cats turned around.
Quickly I dashed behind a tree and fern leaves. The cats approached. I tried to stalk back but I lost my balance. And I fell backwards. And to my bad luck, I fell down a hole.
Alarmed by the noise, the WindClan cats lurked forward. As I hit the ground almost ten tail lengths below me, a wave of pain blasted through me. I closed my eyes and took long breathes. I groaned as I realized the WindClan cats would discover me for sure!
Cats paws thrummed on the ground as twigs snapped and bushes shook. I look up to see three curious cat heads looking at me. I felt an uncomfortable tension between us. I glanced up innocently. It was all I could do.
My icy blue eyes stared at them sadly. Finally, the middle cat spoke. "Were you spying on us?"
"No! I-I-I j-just fell d-down here! Plus you're on ThunderClan territory now!"
"We just heard some noises. What is a kit like you doing all the way over here?"
I wasn't going to say I was an apprentice. It would just get me into bigger trouble. "I just went exploring."
The first cat eyes me suspiciously. "Isn't your camp a bit better guarded? Our camp has everything protected. That Silverstar!" He snorted.
"It's not WindClan 's business to know what we do," I hissed. "You should probably get out of here before ThunderClan finds you!"
"So you don't want to get saved?" Asked the third cat in surprise.
"Why would you want to save me?" I queried.
The middle cat gave a mroww of amusement. "Haven't you learned the warrior code? It states that if a kit is in danger even if it's another clan, you must try to save."
I shook my head. I never knew that. I felt red.
The WindClan cats asked me if I want saving again so I agreed with hesitation. I was too worried someone from my clan wouldn't find me. And my leg felt like it would burst. The cats through me a branch, which they held on to.
The middle one spoke again. "Grab onto that side of the stick. We will haul you up," he instructed. The other two nodded with agreement as they gripped the rough branch.
I unsheathed my claws and dug them through the thick wood until they reached the soft pulpy inside. I heard the wood splinter. Nervously I closed my jaws around the wood to be safe. Then I felt the stick rise.
I started to smile. This was working! The cats pulled more and more. I could hear their panting as they lift. And as they do, they get closer and closer. I close my eyes. Relaxation waves through me. Then my back paws slam into the wall of rock.
I open my eyes at the pain. Blood trickles at the scrapes. But I barely have time to notice before I am pushed onto the edge. I have never been so happy to see lush green grass beneath my paws. I let out a soft purr.
Then I snap back to reality. I turn to look at the cats. "You saved my life!" I meow in gratefulness.
The first one smiles for the first time. "We're only doing what every cat would do," he mews.
I'm doubtful about that but I nod. "What are your names?" I ask.
The first, the kindest, with white silky fur and shiny black patches on half the face, tail, back, and forepaw, introduced himself. "I'm Nightfrost and this," he indicated to the light brown she-cat, "is Honeypaw, my apprentice, also on her final assessment right now." Then he pointed to a brown and white cat. "That is-"
I let out a gasp. "Harestar! Leader of Winclan!"
Harestar nodded like it was nothing. But I know inside he must feel awkward especially lurking on ThunderClan territory after his former leader's defeat.
I licked my paw. I felt weird. A tiny kit-apprentice talking to a significant leader.
I stood up to seem older but my injured leg buckled, searing pain scorching me, and I felt the world spin.
