Chapter thirteen: The Talk

I awake to the nurse tapping my shoulder. The sun is shining through the window and is making it's way over to me. Soon it reaches my face making me squint. Today was the fight. The day I would fight Mira and decipher where I would go. To her side, or mine. There's nothing to come back to except for my sisters. The baker will hide them and keep them safe, for me. I will return to my home to help them, but first I must save my parents from Angeline. If I wait to save them they will be dead and my sisters will be safe until then.

"Will, you must get to the helicopter." She said.

I don't want to get up but I don't want to fight either. Both I have to do. Shivers ran down my spine. Today was the day. I have to fight Mira. No turning back. I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for my stupid powers. I almost scold myself instantly for calling my powers 'stupid'. They aren't stupid, they saved my life. If I hadn't learned how to use them I would have been taken to Angeline or killed from the stunners. Stunners with the damage of a bullet. Quite impressive if you think about it. But not if you've been shot by one. I pull up my sleeve to reveal nothing. Absolutely nothing. The skin had already been healed. Amazing. Technology is an amazing thing. But it can also be a dangerous thing. How did Angeline even find out about my powers when I didn't even know about them? Also, why didn't she take me when I was a baby? Maybe she needed me to know about them before she captured me. But why? Why would she want to know about them? That's the thing about her. Mysterious. I had heard about her before. My father said she was a cruel woman. But others said she was kind. My father was right, she's more cruel then you would think. My mother said she never heard about her only from my father had she heard about her. But now I had to prove myself. Prove what, though? My cowardice? Being the first person to let someone win? What would happen in the arena? Would I let her win or would I win? It's a hard decision. My family or her. The worst thing about it was I couldn't do anything to stop the battle. Nothing.

She takes off the ropes and I sit up. Then I slowly get out of the bed. Shoes were already on the floor and I had socks on already. They must have dressed me. I put the shoes on and start towards the door.

"Wait!" She said. "Angeline would like a word with you." Angeline? She couldn't possibly capture me before I even went into the arena. That would be so stupid. Everyone would know it was her unless she lied.

"Okay." I say, trying to leave my fear out of my voice.

"I'll take you there." She said.

"Alright." I say. I didn't know the way so that would be okay, I think. Why would Angeline want to talk to me? She is cruel but really 'talk'? Why would she want to talk? Nothing to talk about. She snaps me out of my thoughts. "She's inside that room, let's go."

We walk towards the door. I push and the door swings open. I knew I shouldn't have opened that door. Once I do chaos erupts. Two guards grab my arms and two others grab the nurse's. Angeline holds a pistol and pushes the barrel to the nurse's temple. Without even flinching she presses the trigger. I jump and she laughs.

"How dare you! You little -"

She cuts me off. "Little what?" A guard presses his gun to the back of my head. The cold metal making me shiver. I glance over to the nurse. Her lifeless body lying on the ground, her temple covered in blood. I could see tears on her face. She must've been crying before Angeline shot her. Her eyes looked like she had been pleading for Angeline not to shoot her. Angeline was to evil to give anyone a second chance. But the nurse was dead and right now I needed to focus now on what I'm going to do.

"What do you want?" I shout. The gun barrel is pressed harder into the back of my head. "Why did you shoot her? She's innocent!"

"Was," she corrected. "She's dead now. And she would've told everyone what I'm about to do."

I shiver. That didn't sound good. What was she about to do? They tighten their grip on my arms but the gun barrel isn't pushing quite as hard into the back of my head.

"Bring them in, please. Will is going to enjoy this." She said and smiled.

My jaw dropped in awe. My parents were being dragged into the room. Sweat covered their shirts making their shirts stick to them like glue. Bruises and open cuts were on their legs and arms. Dried blood was on their faces.

"Mom, Dad?" I said. "What are you doing here?"

"Will, whatever happens here just remember we love you." My father said.

Tears streamed down my mothers face. "I'm sorry, Will. I'm so sorry." She sobbed.

"Okay, who's going first." Angeline says, raising an eyebrow.

My father kissed my mother on the cheek and said, "I will."

"What are you-"

The guard cuts me off, "shut it." He presses the barrel harder to the back of my head. I steady my breathing.

"What's happen-"

"I said shut it!" He shouts louder. Then I realize what's happening my father walks over to a small chair and waits. He's brave. Braver then I could ever be.

"Dad... no! Don't let them shoot you!" I scream.

"Shut it or I fire!" He shouts.

"Listen to the man." My father said.

My mother stands and walks to the chair next to my father. They smile at each other and whisper something to each other. Angeline walks up behind my father and he just sits there. She presses the pistol to his skull. He glances over to me and smiles. The gun fires and a scream rips itself from my throat. I pull towards my father as his body slumps into the chair and his lifeless body falls to the ground. My mother smiles at me and says, "I love you, Will."

The gunshot fires and my vision blurs I watch my mothers motionless body fall to the ground and the two body's lie next to each other. She just killed my parents. Everything goes into a blur of my screams and cries. Tears were running down my cheeks and I keep screaming.

"No!" I scream.

I keep screaming and screaming, till my throat feels raw. The last thing I see is Angeline's smiling face as she laughs. Before the needle enters my skin and my body slumps onto the guards.
