Chapter 15
Echoflight padded beside Luckystar and Goldenperch as they headed to the gathering island. She could see some shadows among the trees. She guessed that the others were waiting for them already.
"There you are!" Rowanstar snorted. "So, what's this about?"
"Have any of you heard of the White Dove?" Luckystar returned with another question.
"White Dove sounds like a painfully overrated medicine cat," Acornstar inputted.
Echoflight winced. One of the leaders didn't like her. That wasn't good. Could she convince Rowanstar and Hailstar?
"Yeah. One of my warriors claim to be Touched. Amberclaw." Hailstar added.
"I think Speckleflower's been Touched. She can walk now," Rowanstar mused.
"None of mine are Touched, and I prefer it that way." Acornstar sneered.
Echoflight glared at Acornstar discreetly.
"Well, the White Dove is real," Luckystar announced.
Hailstar gasped, Rowanstar's eyes went wide and Acornstar stood defiantly. "Liar. Prove it."
Echoflight stepped forward from the shadows. "I'm the White Dove."
"I don't believe it." Rowanstar growled. He lashed his tail angrily. "ThunderClan always want to be the best. You liars."
"The White Dove is fake," Acornstar mewed, a touch of irritation in her voice.
"It's not," Echoflight growled back. "I can prove it."
"How?" Hailstar challenged, although he seemed less hostile than the others. He was merely interested.
"From RiverClan, Amberclaw has anger issues. I've been helping her. You can ask her if you want. From ShadowClan, Speckleflower has been angry and sad about the fact that her medicine cats won't heal her. I've been the one healing her. If you ask her to walk, she'll be confident and won't fall. I've also helped Silverspots from ShadowClan. She feels betrayed after she and her best friend stopped being friends. I haven't helped anyone from WindClan, but I have helped Dawnmist from my Clan. She's been through a lot and I helped her through it." Echoflight retorted.
Rowanstar stood still, unable to move. Acornstar was furious. "How come you haven't Touched any WindClan cats?"
"None of them needed me!" Echoflight snapped. "You only believe me when you want me to help your Clan!"
Acornstar looked abashed and a little bit annoyed. "I believe you."
"So do I," Hailstar agreed.
They looked at Rowanstar, the most stubborn of them all. He sighed before dipping his head. "I believe you."
Joy swept through Echoflight's heart and she almost leapt up to dance. They believed her!
"Thank you!" she gushed. "You won't regret it. Ever. Thanks again!"
Rowanstar rolled his eyes, muttering under his breath. "What in StarClan have I signed up to?"
"It should be made official," Luckystar pressed. "We should talk about it in the gathering tomorrow night."
"The gathering already?" Acornstar jumped, a vacant look in her eyes. "Sure, whatever you want."
What? Am I hearing her right? Just a minute ago, she was shouting at us, and now she does not care at all.
Hailstar shrugged. "Fine by me."
"Please, Rowanstar," Echoflight begged him. "I don't beg usually, so please! This is really important to be and to every other cat who needs help."
Acornstar seemed to nod in approval and Echoflight continued. "If you ask Speckleflower or Silverspots, they'll back me up. Silverspots didn't trust me at first, but now she's better since I helped her. Please, Rowanstar!"
Rowanstar growled, turning away. "Whatever. I don't care. Just announce it at the gathering."
Luckystar and Echoflight faced each other, both brimming with glee. "It's happening!" Echoflight crowed. "The best moment in life!"
Luckystar purred, letting down her guard the moment Hailstar and Acornstar left. "You're going to be official! White Dove!"
"White Dove! White Dove!" Echoflight chanted for herself and lost herself in millions of daydreams.
What will I become? I'll help every cat! No one will need to hide. Everyone will be happy!
Echoflight bounced next to Luckystar as they headed to the gathering. The Clan had been informed and it was finally time.
ThunderClan arrived first, milling around while they waited. Echoflight had been as playful as a kit, cuffing the younger warriors over the head in her excitement and even daring to climb Luckystar's tree. The golden-brown she-cat had dragged her down by her tail, smirking.
"Oh, Echoflight, I haven't seen you this excited since you were a kit!" Goldenperch exaggerated brightly.
The bubble of happiness broke.
"How dare you!" Echoflight screeched, her claws unsheathed and lunging at her mother. "How dare you say that!"
"What did I do?" Goldenperch scrambled backwards, ducking and avoiding her claws. She clearly couldn't bring herself to attack back.
"You abandoned me as a kit!" Echoflight yowled. "You left me to fend for myself!"
"You had Demonclaw with you-" Goldenperch cut herself off. "Oh StarClan."
"You've realized, haven't you?" Echoflight spat. "You left me at the mercy of Demonclaw."
"You should've spoken up!" Goldenperch protested weakly.
"Spoken up and what?" Echoflight hissed. "Get beaten up by my brother? I was a kit!"
Echoflight slid closer to Goldenperch, lifting her neck to show an old scar on her throat. "Demonclaw did that when we were kits. Almost killed me. You never noticed."
Goldenperch let out a whimper. "I'm...so-"
She was cut off by the rest of the Clans arriving. Echoflight shot her one last look of disgust before stalking off to sit down somewhere.
As she came to her senses, Echoflight realized the gathering was almost over. Luckystar called her over.
"I'm Echoflight," she mewed confidently. "You may know me as Demonclaw's brother."
A shiver of fear went through the cats, especially the WindClan cats. Acornstar went as rigid as a tree.
"After I killed Demonclaw, I felt like I wasn't helping my Clan enough. I went to Dawnmist and I started helping her through her grief. I felt useful again. Then it wasn't enough. As Dawnmist healed, my hunger to be useful drove me to speak to Luckystar. I adopted a nickname. I became the White Dove." Echoflight paused, waiting to see the cats' reaction.
"White Dove..."
"Her?"
"No way!"
"I thought it was a rumor..."
"White Dove..."
"White Dove is real. It's me." Echoflight continued. "Gradually, cats began to find out who I was. I started to help other cats. Amberclaw, of RiverClan. Speckleflower of ShadowClan. Silverspots of ShadowClan."
"Are you biased against WindClan?" a ShadowClan tom sniggered.
"No, I'm not. But no one has come to me for help. Which is why I'm here to tell you all," Echoflight mewed back calmly.
Amberclaw stood up supportively. "She's right! She helped me with my anger issues. Thank you, White Dove."
"It's true!" Speckleflower added. This was the first gathering she'd been to in many moons. "If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be here right now."
"Yes," Silverspots agreed. But Echoflight noticed she said nothing more.
"Can we all agree on making White Dove official?" Luckystar took control again.
"Yes!" Amberclaw caterwauled.
"Yes!" Speckleflower and Silverspots put their voices in.
"Yes!" Hailstar cried.
"Yes!" Rowanstar mewed grudgingly.
"Yes!" Acornstar's voice had a tinge of hope in it.
"Yes!" all four Clans answered in unison.
A/N
It's kind of a filler chapter, nothing really exciting going on.
