Chapter 12
After the war in Ebony's Roots
Echoflight's sharp eyes raked the cats at the gathering as she stood in a throng of ThunderClan cats. Frogfern and Dawnmist were next to her protectively and Goldenperch wasn't far away.
I need to find another cat who needs help.
None of the ThunderClan cats needed help, and the war with Rowanstar had ended, so Luckystar was better. Speckleflower didn't need her and Amberclaw's anger issues were healing nicely.
Echoflight had to admit she was bored. She had already given birth and Waterkit, Redkit and Daisykit were in the nursery in ThunderClan. But she had to come to the gathering.
RiverClan was the second to arrive, ThunderClan being the first. Echoflight quickly scanned them. None of them looked uneasy or nervous. The cats who needed help were often the ones with vacant looks or twitching tails.
Nope. Nothing.
"WindClan and ShadowClan are here!" a cat called.
All the Clans were present, and the chatter stopped as the leaders stepped up to share. Echoflight didn't care for that. She was too busy gazing at a particular ShadowClan cat.
Most of the ShadowClan cats were twitchy, but one cat stood out. In fact, this cat wasn't twitchy at all. Silverspots.
Silverspots held her head high, her gaze focused on Rowanstar. She was trying not to look at any of the ThunderClan or other ShadowClan cats. Echoflight watched Silverspots the whole gathering and caught her glance at Ebonywind, who had gone back to ShadowClan when the war ended. Silverspots had flinched as if she had been struck and gone back to staring at the leaders.
Curious, Echoflight sidled up to Ebonywind. "Hey, how's ShadowClan?" she purred in a welcoming tone.
Ebonywind let out a long sigh. "Silverspots and I used to be best friends. But now, we're not anymore. It's my fault."
"Does she need...me?" Echoflight asked. Ebonywind had learned the secret of the White Dove while she had stayed in ThunderClan.
"Probably," Ebonywind mewed back. "I just want to help her. If sending you to her is helping her, then please help her."
"I will," Echoflight promised. "You're a good cat, and I bet she is too."
"She is."
Echoflight slipped away and continued to watch Silverspots. Soon, the gathering ended as Luckystar finished her speech.
Echoflight found Silverspots again, running over to her. "Silverspots. Can we talk?"
"Did Ebonywind put you to this?" Silverspots mewed, looking annoyed. "Only the White Dove can help me. So, go away."
"Well, I am the White Dove," Echoflight purred.
Silverspots gaped at her before regaining her composure. "Impossible. You liar."
"I am," Echoflight insisted. "I can prove it."
"How?" Silverspots demanded.
"I'll tell you who's Touched," Echoflight challenged back.
"Fine!" she retorted.
"Speckleflower from your Clan. Her leg is better now isn't it?" Echoflight ignored her shocked look and continued. "Amberclaw of RiverClan. Her anger issues are looking good, eh? Dawnmist from my Clan. She's actually happy now. And you, if you want to."
"Speckleflower told me she was Touched..." Silverspots mewed hesitantly. "I need more proof."
"Alright," Echoflight let a hint of a frustrated growl enter her voice. "Tomorrow night, watch Speckleflower. She'll be leaving to meet me. Follow her. And we'll talk then."
Finished, Echoflight left her and ran after her Clan. She could feel Silverspot's gaze on her as she left.
"Hello, Waterkit, Redkit, Daisykit," Echoflight greeted her kits as she stepped into the nursery. Her body shook with tiredness and she lay down on the den floor, Frogfern hurrying in to help groom her.
The three kits immediately began to suckle, mewing quietly in satisfaction.
"I might have found someone else," Echoflight told him.
"That's great."
"What did you do while I was gone?"
"Nothing much. Played with the kits."
"How was that?"
Frogfern shrugged.
It was a very one ended conversation, but eventually, Echoflight fell asleep. Her dreams were of helping Silverspots.
The next night, Echoflight left early, taking her time. She knew she was neglecting her kits, but she had to help Silverspots.
Echoflight sat inside the Cave of Peace for awhile and eventually, Speckleflower arrived, Silverspots following her.
"Hello, Silverspots," Echoflight meowed smugly.
"Fine. I trust you." She growled back.
Speckleflower glanced from them curiously before shrugging and heading to the river. "I'll start practising the leg flex exercise," she called over her shoulder.
"Got it!" Echoflight yowled back before turning to Silverspots
"We'll talk while Speckleflower swims?" she made the statement a question.
"Alright," Silverspots agreed.
"What's wrong?" Echoflight mewed immediately.
"Well, while Ebonywind was in your Clan, I worried for her every day and night. I couldn't sleep at all. I missed her so badly. But then she comes back and tells me that she didn't even think of me." Silverspots told her.
"I'm sure Ebonywind was just busy, with the war and all," Echoflight suggested.
"No! You don't know her like me!" Silverspots snarled before controlling herself. "She's the kindest, sweetest, best, most beautiful..." she continued for a couple heartbeats before stopping.
"I think you considered her as your best friend," Echoflight supplied. "And you feel as if she betrayed you. That hurts a lot. Focus on other things that make you happy. But other than that, unless you tell me a bit more, I can't really do much with little to no information."
"I don't trust you like that yet," Silverspots confirmed. "But I will be back. Are you here every night?"
"A couple times a moon," Echoflight answered. "I have kits. But I'll be here tomorrow night."
"I'll come," Silverspots nodded. "I have a feeling that you really can help me, White Dove or not. I'll see you tomorrow night. I'll probably think on it when I go back tonight, and I'll have my answer if I'm going to tell you anything for you tomorrow."
"Thanks for your faith," Echoflight replied. "I want to help you as well. I want you to feel better. I want every cat to not have to suffer alone and in silence. I want to be a queen, a warrior, and White Dove. I just want every cat to be happy."
