Chapter 6
Hawkpaw crouched in the tree, frozen in horror. Hawkpaw trembled as another shriek of pain reached his ears.
"I have to help her." Hawkpaw whispered to himself, forcing his heavy paws to move. The stone in his belly grew as he slowly snaked down the tree. He landed softly on the forest floor, the two cats were gone.
Hawkpaw saw a body lying in the grass, the cats pelt was torn and bloodied in such a horrid way that the stone in his belly became ice.
Hawkpaw couldn't even recognize the cat, until he got closer and smelled her scent.
Hawkpaw felt his legs go weak and he bolted to the cats side, shaking uncontrollably.
He buried his face in the bloody mangled light brown fur, not caring that blood got on his muzzle.
The body shifted slightly and he leaped to his paws looking into the cats face, her eyes opened and slowly came to focus on him.
Her eyes were lit with horror, "H-Hawkpaw no, I didn't know that when S-Shadehawk talked about a y-young cat, I didn't know h-he meant you..."
"Mother..." Hawkpaw chocked out, his throat sour. Sagefrost blinked her blue eyes slowly, "Shhh my kit, it will be ok..." She sighed and went limp.
"Mother no!" Hawkpaw used his paws to shake her, not caring when his underbelly and paws got soaked in blood as he tried to hold the wound on her neck closed, blood seeped out onto the forest floor but no life source pulsed behind it.
Hawkpaw wanted to wail and curl up like a kit, but he wouldn't get the time. A horrified gasp sounded behind him and he whipped around to see Shadehawk.
Hawkpaw snarled fiercely, his eyes wild with fury, "You!" Shadehawks eyes flashed with a dark triumph, then went back to mock horror.
Sunstar, Cloversun, Ravenpaw, and Rubblefall padded out behind him, all of their faces horrified.
"Sunstar I saw him tearing her apart, and I went to find your patrol, but I'm to late he's murdered my mate..." Shadehawk's voice cracked with horror.
Sunstar stared at Hawkpaw with open surprise, and Cloversun looked petrified.
"Sunstar, it wasn't me! I swear! Shadehawk did it!" Hawkpaw stammered out.
Sunstar looked revolted. "Look at yourself and tell me who didn't do it." He spat.
Hawkpaw looked down at himself, he was covered in his mothers blood, "No its not like that, I was-"
"Stop this now Hawkpaw!" Sunstar interrupted. "Take him back to camp Cloversun, take Ravenpaw with you."
Cloversun and Ravenpaw herded Hawkpaw away, and he didn't argue.
As they walked away, his grief swelled through him, as of he had no heart left in him.
"Cloversun it wasn't me I swear, you know me I wouldn't do something like that!" Cloversun whirled around, her eyes blazing, "Your wrong Hawkpaw, I knew you, but now I don't even know who you are!"
With that she led the way once more, and Hawkpaw hung his head. They padded into camp, and the warriors looked horrified at the sight of Hawkpaw.
Sunstar padded in after them, helping Shadehawk carry Sagefrost into the clearing.
Sunstar leaped onto the High Rock, but there was no need to call a meeting, the clan was already gathering.
Shadehawk forced Hawkpaw to the ground, planting a paw on him to hold him down.
"Shadehawk witnessed young Hawkpaw murdering Sagefrost today," Sunstar paused as vicious glances to Hawkpaw and horrified wails echoed through the clearing. "He is to be banished, would you like to say anything before he must leave Shadehawk?"
Shadehawk had the same mock sadness in his gaze, "I didn't want to believe it, my own son tearing apart his mother, m-my mate..." He bowed his head and when the cats couldn't see his eyes he cast another triumphant glare to Hawkpaw.
Hawkpaw could barely hear, his mind was crowded with grief. "Hawkpaw I hereby banish you from ThunderClan, if you are seen in our territory again, my warriors have permission to kill you."
Shadehawk let go of Hawkpaw, and the young apprentice stood, his head down and his tail trailing as he walked toward the camp entrance.
The dark skies began to let loose their rain, soaking Hawkpaw to the bone.
Hawkpaw turned at the entrance and looked back at his home, he stared straight at Shadehawk, fire blazing in his eyes, "I will find a way to prove to everyone who really did this."
The clan cats who were once his friends faces looked horrified and angry, all except one.
Rainkit broke away from her mother and ran through the rain to Hawkpaw's side, she nuzzled his leg, "You owe me a game, remember?"
Hawkpaw smiled sadly and gently nudged the kit toward her mother, "I wanna go with you Hawkpaw."
Hawkpaw shook his head, "You belong here with your mother," he paused, licking her head, "Besides your only two moons old, soon you won't remember me, and that's for the best."
A few of the clan cats' eyes looked a tiny bit sympathetic as he sweetly addressed the kit, but only for a heartbeat.
Hawkpaw nudged the kit again gently, "Go on." Then he turned, padding through the entrance, his fur heavy with rain.
Hawkpaw didn't even look back as he padded toward the forest outside clan territory.
