Chapter 5

Hawkpaw saw the morning sun call for the end of his vigil, Rainkit had fallen asleep, and Hawkpaw gently prodded her awake "The elders have come to take Icestorm's body, you should get more rest and I'll play with you later today on spare time, ok?"
Rainkit nodded with a yawn, "Sure thing."
Hawkpaw stood, his tail trailing and he padded to the apprentice den, laying in the nest, his bones aching.
His eyelids felt heavy and he gave into sleep. He opened his eyes in a starry forest.
Hawkpaw looked around with wide eyes, and jumped as a voice sounded behind him, "Hello Hawkpaw."
He turned, his mouth gaping in surprise, a slender white warrior stood before him, stars glittering in her fur.
"Icestorm!" Hawkpaw bounded over and nuzzled her shoulder. Icestorm laughed, "It is good to see you, but I'm afraid I have bad news."
Hawkpaw tilted his head, and Icestorm spoke in a strange voice, "A storm is coming your way Hawkpaw, and its nothing like you've ever seen before, beware the night with fangs sharp and flashing, and beware the shade to end the frost and rule the forest."
Hawkpaw stepped back, the fur along his spine bristling at the cold tone of her voice, it was as if the very words carried pain.
Hawkpaw burst awake back at the den, Icestorm's words echoing in his ears.
Hawkpaw suppressed a shiver and stood, ducking out of the apprentice den.
"Ahh Hawkpaw, good to see you getting some rest." Sunstar's deep voice sounded from beside him, he turned to far his leader.
"I have assigned your new mentor to be Duststorm, he will be waiting at the sandy hollow after I call a meeting." Hawkpaw said nothing and just dipped his head, his eyes giving away nothing. Hawkpaw went ahead and padded toward the High Rock as Sunstar called out, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the High Rock for a clan meeting!"
The other warriors padded from the shade, Bramblecloud padding alongside Sandfur and Sagefrost. Leafstorm padded across along with Rubblefall.
"Stagpaw, please step forward." Sunstar called out, and the murmurs of excitement spread through the clearing.
"I, Sunstar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice." Sunstar paused before continuing, "He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn."
Stagpaw's fur was ruffled with excitement as Sunstar continued on. "Stagpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
Stagpaw puffed out his chest and said in a voice with no drop of hesitation, "I do."
Sunstar's pelt glowed under the sun, "Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name, Stagpaw, from this moment you will be known as Stagheart. StarClan honors your Courage and Loyalty and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan."
Sunstar rested his muzzle on Stagheart's head, and the new warrior licked his leaders shoulder respectively.
Stagheart walked over to join the
warriors as the clan called out his name. "Stagheart! Stagheart!"
"Cloverpaw please step forward."
Hawkpaw looked up at the apprentice.
"I, Sunstar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn." Sunstar paused to let his words sink in.
"Cloverpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
Cloverpaw tilted her head upwards, "I do."
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Cloverpaw, from this moment you will be known as Cloversun, StarClan honors your Kindness and Wisdom and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan" Sunstar rested his muzzle on the new warriors head, and Cloversun licked his shoulder respectively.
"Cloversun! Cloversun!" The clan cheered, and Hawkpaw cheered the loudest for his friend.
Hawkpaw congratulated the two new warriors, then padded across the grass and through the shaded entrance.
Hawkpaw leaped onto the rocky slope, easily bounding from one rock to the next.
He crouched as a rustle sounded ahead. A heartbeat later the scent of Thrush hit his nose, and there it was at the base of a tree dragging a worm from the ground.
Hawkpaw slid forward, keeping downwind of his prey, he bunched his muscles then leaped.
Hawkpaw slammed a paw down on its wing, and lunged, breaking its neck with a swift bite.
Hawkpaw buried the thrush, reminding himself to collect it later. As Sunstar had said Duststorm was waiting for him at the training hollow.
"Good, your here, let's begin." Duststorm looked him up and down, "You attack me, and we will fight with claws sheathed until I say we are done."
Hawkpaw crouched, pinning his ears and showing his teeth. Duststorm did the same and the two toms circled eachother.
Hawkpaw snarled and lunged, aiming a blow for Duststorm's head. The warrior ducked and barreled forward, staggering him off balance.
Thinking fast Hawkpaw kicked Duststorm's legs out from under him, and reared, swinging down at him.
Duststorm rolled away just in time, and leaped forward but Hawkpaw was faster.
Hawkpaw used his long hind legs to take a flying leap into the air. Duststorm looked confused for a second as his opponent disappeared. Hawkpaw landed on his back, using a hind leg to flip the surprised warrior onto his side.
Hawkpaw placed a paw on his shoulder and flank, pinning the warrior. Duststorm smiled, "Impressive, but you could work on your form a bit, the better the form, the harder the strike will be."
Hawkpaw nodded, his eyes alive with determination. "What's ne-" Hawkpaw broke off as a scream caught his ears.
Hawkpaw's fur bristled along his spine, "Did you hear that!" Duststorm narrowed his eyes at Hawkpaw and said, "I heard nothing." Hawkpaw stared at the warrior, he had heard a hint of a snarl in his voice.
Hawkpaw backed away, and Duststorm's eyes flashed dangerously, "Get back here, now!"
Hawkpaw turned and burst into the trees, dodging undergrowth this way and that. He yelped as he heard Duststorm's angry snarl, the warrior was right on his heels!
"You don't want to do this fool!" Duststorm yelled, but Hawkpaw wasn't listening. His heart thundered in his ears and he winced as he stepped on a sharp rock, but kept going.
The warrior behind him was gaining ground fast and Hawkpaw desperately searched for something.
He saw a tree ahead and thought, it worked last time it'll work again!
Hawkpaw yowled and ran straight at the tree, leaping and hooking his claws in the trunk.
Duststorm wasn't far behind, storming up the tree after him. Hawkpaw sent bark flying with his hind paws, hitting Duststorm in the face before leaping onto a branch.
"Come catch me mouse-brain." Hawkpaw sneered, leaping onto the next tree as Duststorm landed right where he was only seconds ago.
Hawkpaw stormed on through the trees, heading toward the scream.
Duststorm was left behind, unable to leap from one branch to the next as quickly.
Hawkpaw heard an angry roar from the warrior, and he pushed on. Hawkpaw ran until he didn't hear his pursuer, then he sat in the tree panting.
Hawkpaw tried to think, "Duststorm acted so strange, as soon as I heard that scream," he gasped, "The scream!"
Hawkpaw leaped to his paws and continued running along the shaded branches.
As he got closer a series of brutal snarls sounded from ahead, and Hawkpaw crouched snaking forward. Before he got to the source of the snarling it stopped, he heard voices talking.
Hawkpaw strained his ears to hear what they were saying.
"He got away, you were to carefree with your work, that mouse-brained she-cats screams distracted him and he ran off, he knows I'm not an ordinary weak clan cat." It was Duststorm who spoke, but the real surprise was the cat who spoke next.
The cat said in a smooth and eerie voice, "No worries no worries my friend, its simple, we frame the young cat as the murderer of this she-cat," the cat was interrupted by a weak hiss which must have been the she-cat.
The cat ignored her and continued, "We frame him, he gets banished, I murder Sunstar when he trusts me the most and is on his final life, then I become leader. Then my dear Duststorm with you as my deputy, we will take over WindClan, and you will lead that clan of weaklings, choose the darkest warrior as your deputy, and the next of our cats in ThunderClan will be my deputy, you can take over RiverClan, which Birdflight shall lead, and I'll take over ShadowClan which Snaketail can lead."
The two cats snickered darkly, "And then We will combine the four clans into ShadeClan! And Shadehawk, no Shadestar will rule everything!" The two cats laughed darkly, the sound echoing in Hawkpaw's ears.
Hawkpaw's heart almost leaped out of its chest, and cold fear trembled through him, his father was a traitor!

(I love my cliffhangers XD)
