Chapter 14
Lightningstrike spiraled through darkness, and then he saw a cat padding toward him, stars shimmered in her light brown pelt, and as she walked stars flickered momentarily in her light pawsteps.
"Sagefrost?" Lightningstrike gasped and dashed forward to touch noses with his mother, a purr rising in his throat.
A heartbeat after he greeted her, he yelped in surprise as a cat bowled him over.
Lightningstrike stood and looked at the cat, he was huge with a broad head and large paws, his fur was a tabby white and gold.
"I'm Vipertooth." He growled, no stars shone in his dark pelt, and another cat stood next to him, he wasn't nearly Vipertooth's size, but looked no less deadly.
"I am Badgerclaw." The white and black cat growled, "Your coming to the Dark Forest with us."
Sagefrost hissed at them, "He belongs in StarClan!"
The two cats laughed and Vipertooth spoke, "We made a deal, so as long as we exist, he is staying in the dark forest."
They knocked Sagefrost back and the ground beneath Lightningstrike turned slimy and he began to slide, tumbling, unable to sink his claws into the murky ground. He slid back away from the starlight, and into the darkness.
He wrinkled his nose at the reek and looked up, no stars shone through the dark ominous trees.
I'm in the dark forest! Lightningstrike realized. Lightningstrike closed his eyes and hoped to be back in the forest, and when he opened his eyes he was at camp, his fellow clanmates padded past him without noticing.
He saw Rainfern sitting in the shade next to Nightfang, the tom licked her ears, pressing against her. He turned his head and grinned, he can see me! Lightningstrike realized.
He focused on Rainferns mind, "Rainfern..." He sensed her alarm and her thought sounded in his mind, "Lightningstrike?"
"Yes its me, I want to tell you that-" he was interrupted by her, "No! I want nothing to do with a murderer like you!"
Lightningstrike growled, "I'm a murderer!? Who do you think killed me!? There was no fox, only Nightfang and his goons trying to get revenge on me for killing Shadehawk!"
Rainfern recoiled from Nightfang, "Sorry, I-I need some sleep." She went into the warriors den and later down, as if sleep would keep Lightningstrike away.
A foggy shape formed over her head and Lightningstrike realized it must be her dream, he leaped into it and found himself standing behind her.
"Rainfern."
The silver tabby she-cat whirled around, her eyes wide, "I didn't try to kill them, they killed me. I was going to go to StarClan but Nightfang's goons dragged me to the Dark Forest."
She growled, "Why should I believe you? You hate me anyway."
Lightningstrike hung his head, "Shadehawk was able to control me, if I had stayed with you he would have made me kill you, I did it to protect you, and now Nightfang is going to kill you."
Rainfern recognized the distraught in his voice, and she pelted over to him, "Oh Lightningstrike," she breathed, "its true isn't it?"
He nodded, sucking in a breath. Lightningstrike looked at his dull pelt, shadows clung to his fur and swirled around his paws when he stepped.
Rainfern's eyes glowed and she padded up to him, reluctant at first, then pressed her head into his chest, nuzzling his shoulder.
He nuzzled her one more time, "Its morning, take care." Lightningstrike decided he would rather say in the can territories then go back to the dark forest.
Lightningstrike entertained himself by messing with ShadowClan patrols, and throwing fish at RiverClan apprentices.
Lightningstrike laughed as a WindClan warrior stared wide-eyed as a rabbit floated through the air toward the sunset.
The sun was beginning to set and Lightningstrike padded into ThunderClan, running as fast as the wind and as light as a feather.
He willed Rainfern to be able to see him, and she looked at him, and smiled.
He smiled back and thought to her, there is one way for me to get to StarClan, your not gonna like it though. She looked at him and the message was clear, anything for you.
Lightningstrike motioned for her to follow and she padded back out after him.
As he was leading her toward the great birch he explained that the only way for him to go to StarClan was if he killed the two dark forest cats.
They stopped in the clearing, "Vipertooth! Badgerclaw! Come fight me!" yowled. He whipped around as a laugh sounded behind him, "Be careful what you wish for."
