Chapter 13
Lightningstrike padded shakily back to camp, carrying a thin mouse and scrawny squirrel he had caught on the way back. He couldn't believe what his father had made him do, he didn't want to believe it.
When he padded in Rainfern came bounding over, "Lightningstrike there you are!" She touched her nose to his cheek, "I'm sorry I overreacted earlier..." Lightningstrike stopped listening, Ivy's words hit him like a bolt of lightning, if I'm with her, she's in danger...I have to keep her safe. Lightningstrike took a deep breath, waiting for her to finish her sentence.
"You missed Nightfang's warrior ceremony, apparently he fought off a fox with Snaketail! Isn't that something." Rainfern said, sounding surprised.
"Rainfern..." Lightning strike looked into her beautiful blue eyes, like pools of crystal water. "This isn't going to work, I cant be with you." Lightningstrike told himself over and over that he was doing this for her, but the look in her eyes almost shattered his heart. "B-but-"
"No," he interrupted her, "I don't love you, I never have, I never will so just go, stay away from me because I don't need you." Lightningstrike saw her heartbreak in her eyes as he turned away and padded to where the warriors were sharing tongues.
"You ok Lightningstrike?" Treefur asked, tilting his head. Lightningstrike cleared his throat, "I'm fine." Lightningstrike's heart felt like it was torn apart and left as crow-food, and he felt as cold as the leaf-bare wind.
He listened to the warriors small talk, and out of the corner of his eye he saw Rainfern hunched over with Nightfang at her side, the dark warrior licking her ears and giving words of comfort.
Lightningstrike snapped his head away and stomped into the warriors den, curling into his nest to sleep.
Lightningstrike woke up as the sun shined into the warriors den, he shivered from the cold and padded out of the den, "I'm gonna hunt alone this morning." He told Foxfang as he headed out of camp.
Lightningstrike hadn't gone further then the great birch clearing when a voice called to him, "Hey Lightningstrike, lets go chat at the great birch!" He turned to see Nightfsng, who padded up with a friendly smile.
"Sure." Lightningstrike said, padding alongside the younger warrior. The clearing around the great both was empty and Lightningstrike turned to face Nightfang. "So why did you want to talk?"
Nightfang's yellow eyes darkened and he grinned, circling Lightningstrike, "Revenge my friend, revenge, you killed my mentor and rightful leader, so now I'm going to kill you."
Lightningstrike hissed, his fur spiking up. "If I die then I'll be in StarClan with loved ones." Nightfang laughed darkly, "We will see."
Lightningstrike growled, "You think you can kill me?" Nightfang laughed again as if he had told a joke, "Of course not, my friends will help me."
Snaketail and Leafstorm padded from the trees, grinning darkly.
Lightningstrike growled, unsheathing his long claws. Lightning yowled a battle cry and leaped high onto Leafstorm's back, swinging to the side and rolling to the ground, gripping onto the surprised warrior with sharp claws, swinging her over and ramming her head to the ground. He continued rolling and leaped off her, barreling into Nightfang's side. The warrior shrieked as Lightningstrike tore his claws down Nightfang's shoulder.
Claws raked his flanks as Snaketail tried to pin him.
Lightningstrike bucked strongly, sending the warrior staggering back. He reared up and grabbed Nightfang's scruff, throwing him into the other warriors.
"He's to good Nightfang!" Leafstorm hissed. Lightningstrike bares his teeth, ready for more.
Suddenly
His limbs started to freeze up and he realized with a jolt that Shadehawk was taking over again. Lightningstrike did his best to fight back, but to no use.
He growled in a voice that was Lightningstrike's, but echoed with Shadehawk's voice, "You fools, weaken him before I cant hold him anymore!" He snapped.
Nightfang shook his head and lunged, clamping his jaws down on Lightningstrike's paw. Lightningstrike howled in pain, Leafstorm and Snaketail joining in attacking his legs.
Lightningstrike felt his legs buckle beneath him, Shadehawk released him and he tried to stand, but collapsed onto the grass with a yelp.
Nightfang snarled and unsheathed his claws, his black pelt blocking the sun from Lightningstrike's face.
Fierce yellow eyes glared at him, "You have no idea what it's been like waiting for this moment, so I'm going to take my time."
Lightningstrike snarled at him, following Nightfang's claws with his eyes. The dark warrior's claws were unsheathed, and he slowly hooked them into Lightningstrike's pelt, listening to him screech as he slowly tore his claws down Lightningstrike's side.
"Snaketail, patrol the area and tell me immediately if any cats are coming." He dipped his head and prowled off.
Nightfang continued ripping at Lightningstrike's pelt, blood drenching his fur.
Lightningstrike felt dizzy from pain, the forest around him blurring. Nightfang leaned down and hissed into his ear, "Once your dead, your dear Rainfern will be mine, and then I'll kill her one day, slowly and painfully." Lightningstrike heaved, "No!" Nightfang was about to give the final blow, when Snaketail burst from the shaded trees, "A cats coming! Its Rainfern!"
Nightfang cursed under his breath, and his attitude changed completely, he made it look like his fur was spiked up in surprise, and looked down at Lightningstrike with wide yellow eyes.
Rainfern bolted into the clearing, "I smell blood!" She meowed, alarmed.
Nightfang blocked Lightningstrike from her view, and looked at her, "Rainfern! There was a fox, we chased it out, but not before it...you'd better see." He bowed his head and stepped aside.
Rainfern stared in horror, her silver tabby fur spiked up in shock as she looked at Lightningstrike, who lay bloodied, his pelt ragged and torn.
She bolted over, and Nightfang grabbed her gently by the scruff, "Wait! He's dangerous! I caught him leading the fox toward camp with a mouse..." He trailed off as if he couldn't say anything more.
No! That's not true! Lightningstrike thought, but his vision was so blurred he could barely see. Rainfern looked down at him, her blue eyes a mix of horror, sadness, and anger.
"Rai-Rainfern..." Lightningstrike chocked out. "B-Beware..." He trailed off, unable to finish his warning. His heart felt weak and Lightningstrike was dimly aware of the pool of blood around him, all he knew was pain, it filled his body and throbbed in his head. The next thing he knew was that he couldn't feel his paws anymore, the eerie sensation crawled and tingled up his spine, until there was nothing left.
Lightningstrike's head fell back, his golden eyes dull, staring up at the sky,
above him, and Rainfern let out a wail.
Nightfang pressed his pelt against hers, nuzzling her head gently and licking her ears, "Its ok, I'm here, I'll always be here." He whispered, looking away from her and grinning darkly, his eyes flashing with a devilish triumph.
