Chapter five

A fat plump mouse sniffed around among the leaves of an old tree. Smokepaw looked wary at it. He had to catch that mouse, the tomcat lifted his tail and sank into a hunting position. He lifted his nose in the air and smelled the air, no other cats around to take his mouse. He crept up to the mouse without making a sound. He was almost there. He was almost at the fat chubby mouse. When he was only a tail length away from the creature, he jumped forward.

'Waking!' someone shouted. Smokepaw opened his eyes in annoyance. He almost had that mouse! In fact, he had expected it to be his mentor Sunglow, but no... At the entrance to the apprentice den stood a gray tom, his nose had nicks and his eyes seemed to be spitting fire. Clawtail. 'You must have thought you got rid of me now that you were apprentices, didn't you?' he snarled, Smokepaw's littermates and Rainpaw had woken up in the meantime as well. Growling, Smokepaw and Rainpaw looked at each other. 'Pff, you can't beat me with your talk!' the black and white tom brutally challenged his stepfather. 'You ugly, cheeky kitten!' snapped Clawtail angrily. 'At least I'm more beautiful than your future.' Smokepaw snapped at him and pushed his stepfather aside, then walked out of the apprentice den. He was actually proud of himself. He liked being a "baddie". The tomcat walked contentedly to the garbage place tunnel, in order to escape from the camp. He walked slowly to a small clearing in the woods. Sometimes you could hear the leaves rustling in the grass as the wind came along. Sometimes you could also feel that it was almost Leaf-bare. Smokepaw thought deeply. He wanted to go to another Clan, but he didn't want to miss his littermates and mother. Maybe I can also take Webpaw, Purplepaw and Zebrapaw to another Clan? His mother Flowerstream probably wouldn't come along. And what about Rainpaw? So many dilemmas and difficult choices/things! Perhaps he should discuss this with Rainpaw himself. So maybe they could meet somewhere at midnight every night. Only now have to come up with a solution for that with his mother Flowerstream.

Whirring, Rainpaw pressed her wet fur against Smokepaw's fur. In the meantime it had started to rain and the two cats were standing in the middle of the camp in the rain, looking at the sky with gray clouds. 'Did you know I'm really good with kittens?' Smokepaw boasted, purring, the cat next to him gave him a playful nudge on the shoulder. 'Yes yes.' she laughed, rolling her eyes. A twig cracked and the cat looked warily at the warrior's lair. A pair of eyes peered from the den at the two cats. Rainpaw shivered and the black-and-white tom next to her became uneasy. 'It's just your mother.' Smokepaw tried to reassure the cat next to her, her hair was already standing on end. 'I want to talk to you about something...' the tomcat began to distract Rainpaw. It worked. The gray striped she-cat looked at the male and nodded. 'What about then?' she asked.
'I think I want to go to another clan.' sighed Smokepaw. 'You want what?' Rainpaw's eyes widened. 'I think I want to go to another clan.' the tomcat repeated his sentence. 'But...' the cat understands. 'I love you! Don't go away!' she lamented. 'I know.' he muttered. 'But I want to get away from Clawtail and live a hopefully safe life in another Clan.' he explained. 'Are you taking your littermates with you?' Rainpaw asked, looking at the ground. 'Yes, but not my mother. I don't think she wants to leave.' Smokepaw nodded toward the warrior's den, where the eyes were already gone. Only the gentle tapping of the rain could reassure the hangover now. Soon it will be Leaf-bare and all the leaves will come off the trees. Rainpaw interrupted his thoughts. 'What about me?' she asked with an irritated look in her eyes. 'I was planning to meet you—if that was okay with you, too—like maybe every night, at a border at midnight.' Smokepaw explained his plan. Rainpaw nodded. 'Fine.' she murmured.
'Fine?' echoed the tomcat.
'Yes.' sighed the gray-striped cat. 'I think I'm going to the apprentice den.' she continued, wagging her tail. 'Not to go to sleep, just to hide for the rain.' She tipped Smokepaw's head and walked across the soft, wet earth to the apprentice den for shelter. The black and white tom looked at his paws and listened to the soothing sounds.
