Chapter 16
Shadowspirit woke up the morning after her daring kit rescue in the river, she parted her jaws in a yawn, shaking clumps of moss from her pelt before padding out into the dazzling light of day. Blinking her eyes against the glare she began reviewing over everything she learned yesterday. Mystery padded groggily out of the den, "Your up early today, even though I know the answer, what are you up to?" I glared at him skeptically and he cleared his throat, making his voice higher pitched and overly excited, "I mean- What are you up to Shadowspirit?!" She laughed, cuffing her friend lightly over the ears, "Oh your so full of it!"
"Hey I hope you guys aren't having a party without me!" A meow called from the treetops as Ivy leaped off a branch, skidding down another before landing gracefully onto the ground. "Hey Ivy." Shadowspirit purred in greeting, and the tabby she-cat looked at her thoughtfully. "You know Shadowspirit, since your one of us for now, have you thought about changing your name?"
The black she-cat made a thoughtful noise, "Hmm I suppose your right, if I'm going to live the life of a rogue, I have to let go of my clan roots, or I will never truly be a rogue." Mystery sent his sister a 'Don't encourage her!' death glare, but Shadowspirit ignored him. "How about just Shadow? Or maybe just Spirit? Or maybe even something entirely different like.... like.... uhm... I don't know."
Ivy shrugged, "You can think over it, in the mealtime- whoops I mean, in the meantime, how about we find something to eat? I'm starving!" Shadowspirit and Mystery laughed, "Always thinking about your stomach huh sis?" He teased, and she leaped onto his back, standing on top of him, "Well I'm thinner than you!" Mystery rolled his eyes and shook her off, "You know, knowing everything will make a cat lazy."
Shadowspirit laughed, "Come on you two." With that she led the way into the forest, rolling her eyes at Ivy and Mystery's constant playful bickering, "Well at least I don't eat poison leaves.", "Well at least I don't have fur spikes on the tips of my ears.", "They aren't spikes they're tufts." Shadowspirit rolled her eyes and turned to face the bickering siblings, thinking of anything that would distract them, "How about we have a contest?"
Both rogues looked at her in interest, "Yeah uh... whoever catches the most prey by sunhigh wins?" All three cats glanced quickly at the sky, it looked like it would be an hour or so before sunhigh. Ivy and Mystery exchanged a glance and meowed at the same time, "Your on!" Shadowspirit grinned and the three tensed, glaring at eachother until Ivy yowled, "Go!"
The long-tailed she-cat immediately took to the trees, Mystery darted off another way, and Shadowspirit called after them, "Meet back by the den at sunhigh with your catch!" With that the hunt was on, literally, and she was determined to win. She crouched low, slinking into the thicker, more dense part of the oak forest, her jaws parted to capture any scents.
Not long after she caught the scent of a vole, scanning her gaze along the forest floor until she spotted the small creature shuffling through the grass. Shadowspirit crept closer, its warm scent making her mouth water as she tensed her muscles, leaping forward. The vole squealed as her paw clamped down on its back, the small creature attempting to squirm from her grasp as she quickly tucked her head, nipping its spine with a small crack.
She scraped earth over the prey to hide it from the other predators as she continued the hunt. The next prey she saw was a squirrel, which darted far up a tree before she could catch it, cursing under her breath she searched more, the sun beginning to climb higher into the sky as her time was running out. She spotted a small sparrow up ahead as it flapped down to land on the ground, hopping mechanically as it searched for food.
Shadowspirit held her breath in anticipation, please don't let me miss this one! She circled downwind of it, slinking silently over the grass until her unsuspecting prey was about a tail-length away. She tensed the muscles in her hind legs, unsheathing her claws as she lunged forward, hissing in triumph as her claws sunk into its back, the sparrow letting out a shrill cry before she killed it with a bite to the back of its neck.
A sudden flash of movement surprised her as a large speckled brown rabbit raced by, its eyes wide with fear from the birds alarm call. Shadowspirit gave chase immediately, adrenaline coursing through her as she raced after the rabbit, her paws barely touching the ground as she lengthened her stride. The rabbit turned to dart around a tree, and she hooked around from the side, her claws spiking its pelt as she brought it down, killing it swiftly with a satisfied meow.
She picked up the rabbit and carried it back to retrieve her sparrow, then the vole. Shadowspirit's jaws and neck ached by the time she dragged her haul back to Mystery's den, where the other two rogues were waiting, bickering of course. "Wow nice catch, Shadowspirit!" Ivy exclaimed, she had caught a plump squirrel and a shrew, while Mystery won with a fish, a mouse, a woodpecker, and the crazy rogue even carried the woodpecker's nest full of eggs.
Shadowspirit rolled her eyes, "Cheater you know where all the prey is!" Mystery shrugged and Ivy snickered, butting him lightly in the shoulder with her head. The three cats each chose something from their haul of prey to eat, Ivy took the squirrel, Mystery took the shrew and mouse-not surprising-while Shadowspirit had the rabbit.
After they ate they spent some time chatting when finally Mystery stood and meowed, "I'm going to take the rest of this to some of the rogues around here, we definitely don't need more food right now." Shadowspirit nodded, and started thinking about everything she had learned watching the clan cats the other day. "Hmm what if I mixed ShadowClan's dive and twist move, with WindClan's swift strikes, RiverClan's shoulder grip, and ThunderClan's dust storm?" She thought out loud.
Ivy stared at her blankly, "What're you blabbing on about? You lost me already I have no clue what gibberish your talking." Shadowspirit laughed, "They're all moves from other clans I learned while I was... uhh... observing them... secretly... in the shadows.... hidden from view, but anyway if I mixed moves from one clan with another, who knows what kind of fighting style I can come up with!"
Ivy looked at her, seeming interested, "Besides the fact that you were spying on all the clans, I think thats a good idea, so go on try your mixed style or whatever, impress me." Shadowspirit nodded, pausing for a heartbeat to remember what all the moves were like before crouching, staring at Ivy with narrowed eyes. The rogue she-cat realized what she was going to do and meowed, "Wait I didn't mean try them on m-"
She was cut off as Shadowspirit dove forward tucking under Ivy's belly and twisting before she rolled completely under the she-cat like the ShadowClan move does originally, "Dive and twist." Before Ivy could move out of the way, Shadowspirit aimed quick stabbing jabs into her underbelly with sheathed claws before rolling away, "Swift strikes." All the while she made sure to drag her paws when she moved, kicking up clouds of dust and sand, "Dust storm." As she rolled back up onto her paws after the swift strikes, she reared up and gripped Ivy's shoulders with sheathed claws, wrenching the rogue down to the ground, "And finish with shoulder grip."
Ivy shoved her off and scrambled away, her pelt ruffled as she meowed, "Okay okay I'm impressed just don't do that to me again I will be clearing dust from my fur for days-" Shadowspirit purred in amusement as the silver and brown rogue carried on and on, things were nice, even her troubles seemed to be to far behind her to catch up, but what she will find out, is that running from the past has a tendency for the very thing your running from to come back to nip you in the tail end.
(Hey guys, hope you enjoyed the chapter, blah blah blah all that usual stuff, comment, and let me know what you think a good idea for Shadowspirit's short-time rogue name will be, maybe I'll use your idea who knows right? Thanks for reading, <3 Jade)
