Spark's Grief - Chapter 7

"Goodbye, Dawnmist." Spark mewed softly to the ginger she-cat. "Stay strong. Don't let Demonclaw ruin your life."

"Don't leave, please." Dawnmist replied, nuzzling Spark.

"I don't want my kits to become warriors." Spark looked down at Autumn and Wild Wind.

Spark and Dawnmist had buried Ember together after she had recovered from the shock.

Spark trekked through the woods, Dawnmist at her side, Ember swinging from her jaws. Grief was howling in her heart as she found the perfect spot in her old home.

"You lived in this barn?" Dawnmist asked.

Spark gazed at the barn, feeling the memories rush back. After her family had died, she had run for her life. This barn had been her home for a few weeks.

"Yes," she breathed.

Spark remembered Ember being lowered into the ground, the dirt covering his bright fur until finally, it couldn't be seen again.

It's been half a moon... she thought sadly.

"Goodbye, Spark." Dawnmist twined tails Spark. "I hope I see you again."

"You've been good company to me during my stay. Goodbye, Dawnmist." Spark glanced at her kits before taking them out of the camp.

Worry flooded her as they were both silent. None of them had uttered a word since being born. A she-cat named Snowfall had assured her that it was perfectly normal, and that warrior kits were just more developed, but Spark was still worried.

"Let's go," Spark told her kits, sensing their unease.

Autumn bravely took a step forward, her fur rippling. Wild Wind followed until they were headed towards the Twolegplace.

"We're going to visit Ember's grave, okay?" Spark asked. "Then, we'll leave. We'll leave and be happy forever."

Wild Wind nuzzled into her soundlessly.

Sighing, Spark continued to lead the way until the grass turned into hard concrete. They plodded on, even when it rained lightly.

Finally, Spark spotted the familiar bush that marked Ember's grave.

Spark lowered Ember into the hole, trying not to look away.

I'm sorry.

Me too. Spark thought. He doesn't deserve it.

Rustling made her ears prick as she turned slowly to face the barn.

SPARK! Whatever you do, don't go in. You don't need to-

Spark ignored Grief and padded into the barn, taking Autumn and Wild Wind with her. A small paw poked out of a human nest and slowly, a kitten emerged.

Spark cocked her head. It couldn't be more than two moons old.

"Hello?" it asked.

"Hi, I won't hurt you." Spark breathed, her eyes stinging in pain.

You shouldn't have gone in. Grief growled.

The kit was identical to Ember. The same ginger fur. Even its tabby stripes were the same. The only difference was that Ember's eyes had been closed, while this tom's eyes were open.

They were a beautiful green, one that reminded her of ThunderClan's forest.

Wild Wind reacted first, padding up to the tom and sniffing him. Autumn followed more cautiously.

The ginger tom shivered, and Spark felt a pang of worry as she saw that he was sick. His fur was crusted with dirt and his paws were wet. His nose was dry, and he coughed occasionally.

Then, Wild Wind did something amazing. He spoke.

"Brother?"

Spark collapsed on the ground as Grief whispered to her.

They think he's their brother. You can't just leave him here now.

Spark collected herself before picking up the tom. "How about Emberstorm for a name?"

The kit nodded eagerly before snuggling into her. Touched, Spark used her tail to pull in Autumn and Wild Wind and the four of them just lay on the straw.

Spark was aware of Grief talking to her, perhaps some mean jokes or sneers, but they were drowned out by Emberstorm's sniffles, Autumn's rustling as she made herself comfortable and Wild Wind's light grunts.

The next day, Spark decided that Emberstorm needed to see a human medicine cat. The question was where to find one.

Over the night, he had taken a turn for worse and was barely moving.

You shouldn't have gotten attached.

Grief was back.

Spark hovered anxiously outside a human house. She had decided that it was probably best if she gave Emberstorm to the humans so they could heal him. Then, she would rescue him.

"Are you okay with this?" Spark mewed quietly.

"Okay." Emberstorm echoed.

"Okay then." Spark placed Emberstorm outside the house before yowling at the top of her lungs.

"HUMANS! COME OUT!"

Suddenly, a door clicked open and Spark whirled around into a bush where Autumn and Wild Wind were hidden. The human clicked its teeth, making some noises, before picking Emberstorm up and taking him inside.

Yes!

Not good, Spark. You're making trouble for yourself.

You can see the future now? Yeah right, and I'm dead.

Yes, I can see the future.

Spark paused.

You really can?

Yes. I can.

Tell me something about the future. Spark demanded.

Beside her, Autumn twitched, and Wild Wind glared at the human house.

I can't tell you anything. The other beings forbid me to. Grief snarled in resentment. Believe me, if I could, I would. I've grown to like you. You're a peculiar little cat, you know?

How?

Not many cats could face that much grief.

Spark sighed before tucking Autumn and Wild Wind closer into her before closing her eyes herself.

"Spark!"

Spark curled closer into a ball, still sleepy.

"Spark!"

Spark, get up.

Shut up.

Emberstorm's back.

Spark was up immediately. She focused on the ball of fur in front of her and her heart melted. He was perfect in every way now. His eyes were bright, and his fur groomed neatly. He was no longer coughing. The sickness was out of him.

"Oh, Emberstorm," Spark licked his ears affectionately.

"Let's go." Emberstorm mewed.

Spark dipped her head before sneaking her kits away from the human house.

"Where are we going?" Emberstorm asked hesitantly.

"We're going to build a home for us. We'll be wild and free." Spark replied confidently. "I promise I won't fail you."

Spark led them past hills, along valleys, up trees, across rivers and through Twolegplaces until finally, they reached a perfect place.

Spark licked Autumn's head before nuzzling Wild Wind then finally wrapping her tail around Emberstorm. The four of them looked over a small dip in a valley, the sunset casting glows around their new home.

"Beautiful." Autumn said her first word.

Spark couldn't have agreed more.
