Chapter Thirty-Three

I got tired of everything that happened and my mind is tired of coping with all these things. I just found myself laying on the bed. My Dad left for a minute now and that's why I and my Aunt Hussey who's the only one been left here.

It's still hard for me to figure out on how did Ethann betrayed me. Us. How he slept peacefully at night and busied himself lying to me on everything. We aren't born to be just fooled! I don't know why did my life just fucked up and became like this. I didn't dream of a life like this! We have the power, our last name screams power and enough to make us live smoothly. So why does it have to be this rough?

Just like the Hadleys. Their names, every bit of them scream wealth, elegance, and power as well. They are the most popular family in this country! Great businessmen! No one's brave enough to try to make a fuss with them. Gladstones are the exception. They are all bullshits that made them shameful humans.

“Oh, my Eummie babyboo! Oh God thanks, you answered my call finally.” I heard Shannie from the other line.

I groaned. “Didn't know that you were calling me. I muted my phone sorry, I just took a nap.” I told her the truth.

“Why is it you're always sleeping—oh, my stupidity. Of course, you're tired. Sorry about that. Anyway, I've heard the news! A lot of articles about it have been spreading throughout the country!”

My eyes widened. I know journalists are just doing their jobs but I didn't expect that it could be this fast to spread. It's as fast as wildfire.

“Really?” I massaged my temple. My goodness. “Ugh, my life is now fucked up, Shannie. I don't know what to do anymore! Daddy is busy stressing himself on the case and I hate it! I hate it that he is doing this, I mean, our life was supposedly at peace. I would blame Gladstones to death.”

We were like that for more than an hour. I rant my feelings and my words on the phone while Shannie's listening. She agreed with everything that I said. She as well, she got mad at my ex-suitor. It's a really good thing that I didn't accept him to become my boyfriend. I didn't regret anything. But I swear, he will.

I also asked for news about Dawn from her. However, on my unfortunate, she didn't know anything. Maybe I should just ask Yulla. She knows a lot from him. I can't seek for news about him yet coz I just don't know why. I just feel that I shouldn't do it yet. There's a right time for that.

“Helly, can I come in?”

I heard a voice from outside. It was from my Aunt Hussey. The door of my room wasn't locked at all because Dad said, in case I'll be on panic, I will be able to run immediately.

“Sure, Auntie.”

She is on her frowning expression when she finally faced me. She sat down at the side of my bed.

“I‘m sorry for everything that happened, Helly. I know that you have to rest because, you know, I understand your illness but those people were just being so cruel. They are so dumb for destroying other's life just because of temptations and for the power that they will have once they commit those things.”

I sighed as I am agreeing with what she said. Yeah, this is all because of the power. “This fate was already written for us, Auntie. We can't do anything about it. We won't know what our life's waiting for us. I suddenly felt like I miss my old self. Innocent and naive.”

She went closer to me and brushed my hair using her fingers. “Don't worry, no matter what situation will come to you, I'll be here by your side. You're my family. Your Dad, he's been so very close to me since before that we're still young. So, I'm here with you and I promised that I'll be a mother figure to you. Though, I'm sorry if I am a bit late.”

I smiled genuinely. Suddenly got overwhelmed by what she said. “Thank you, Auntie. Daddy really needs someone to lean on now. He can't lean on me, I'm slowly breaking and I feel sorry for that.”

“I am trying my best to be strong, Helly. Actually, there was a reason behind that's why I came late. I was busy moving on from my ex-husband. He hurt me! I filed divorce papers for us because I can't take the pain anymore. I don't really know why life is very opposite when it comes to things that we are dreaming about. The life we wanted to be, we can't have that easily.”

I nodded. I heard the news of her and her ex-husband just months ago.

"When I was young, I dreamt about having a happy family just like the fairytales. I want to find my true love but it was so hard. I can't find it on just kissing someone. I can't find my true love just by eating a poisonous apple.  I can't find it just by leaving my glass shoes behind. If I bite the apple, in reality, no one would gonna kiss me so I will be able to wake up. If I leave my shoes on the grand staircase, in reality, no one will pick them up and will bring them back to me. In reality, I can't find my true love in just a blink of an eye.” I listened to her the whole time she was saying those. She got the point, everything never comes easy.

"That is how unlucky I am, Helly. I got tired of finding it, that's why I'm here. I realized everything. If heaven won't let me have it, then I will understand. Even if it was hard. I have my niece that needs a mother—someone who will treat her like a true daughter. That's why I am here with you."

My heart ached from her speech. Everything she said hit me so hard that it made my mouth zip. I didn't know what she's been through. But there's one thing that I knew. Her love story was full of tragedy and traumatic experiences. Maybe that's why she stopped on chasing true love. She filed the divorce papers and just accepted her fate. That is how cruel the world is.

I wiped the little tears that escaped from my eyes.

"Aish! We are being so dramatic here." She chuckled with tears. "You must eat your breakfast now, your tutor will come here anytime now. Take your medicine, I'll just go shower."

I nodded at Auntie. Her words never left my mind. I just left the lazy table beside me on the bed and grabbed the towel to take a bath. I was still able to walk but because of this chaos, I became bedridden. Great.

Daddy told us everything. All of the reasons for the Gladstones of why they betrayed us. I still can't believe that they can do it to us—I mean, they are my family's greatest friends. They are always on our side. Little did I know that they were planning something that will cost our life.

On the night after that, Dad told us everything that the Gladstones planned. I actually almost got crazy listening to everything that Dad said.

“I talked with one of their men lately. How stupid their actions are. They paid that man to point my name at the blame! As well as putting the blame on Hadley!" Dad frustratingly hissed while chewing the dinner.

I just remained silent and never planned to meddle with their topic.

"What? That's unreasonable. How much did they pay?" Aunt Hussey asked while slicing the steak.

"For Pete's sake, they paid twenty million! The man must have been blinded by the amount of money. That is how cruel they are. They just paid someone to put us in hell. Now, Hadley was busy filing cases for them too."

Oh? The Hadleys are busy filing cases for them? Dawn must probably be one of them. I wanted to ask Dad if he had any interaction with Dawn but I chose to be silent. He might ask me questions that will expose our secretive relationship.

They paid twenty million. What a tempting amount of money. That hellish money can twist us off a cliff. Dad was right. Those people must be blinded by the amount of the payment. However, that was still an unacceptable reason. That is toxic.

"Why are they blaming you, anyway? You didn't harm them, right? Then they must have their own reasons." Aunt Hussey furrowed her brows.

On the other hand, I tried to figure out everything that I heard from them. Good thing, Dad didn't ask about me. I might reveal the truth that I escaped with Dawn the last time.

That hit me. I missed him suddenly. I want to see him and hug and hug him the whole time again.

“I'm not sure of their reasons yet. But there's one thing that I am sure of. It's because of Helly's rejection towards Ethann. Hah! How pathetic they are. Asking someone to marry their heir! Their stupid heir? for the sake of their business. Tsk." Dad shook his head in disappointment.

"What did you expect? Where in the world of business. People can easily be fooled by money—or whatsoever materialistic things. In their mind, in this world, you need to be practical and wise. That's why they commit to destroying other's lives for them to achieve their success."

I got secretly stunned the whole time while listening to how they exchange words with each other. For auntie, I agree with what she said.

"Yes, you're right Hussey. In their despair, Helly was smart enough to refuse their proposals. Maybe, they got pissed off at her rejection." There's a ghost of amusement in Dad's expression.

I gulped and slowly looked at him. I am slowly chewing my food. "Are you blaming me, Dad? If I didn't refuse them, this wouldn't happen." I slowly spoke.

Their brows both furrowed while glaring at me.

"No! I even saluted you for that. Don't worry, this isn't a sarcastic speech. You were smart enough that you always refused them. You're great, Helly." Dad chuckled.

I just shrugged. Well, I rejected Ethann, that was because I really didn't like him in the first place.

"Now, the Hadleys and we have become allies! We will both make sure that Ethann and Richard will rot in jail. They lose."

They deserve to be in jail. I will blame them too. They are the reason why I am chained here while suffering from my illness. Those kinds of people are destroying everything. They are hellish. They don't deserve any pity.
