Warm Together
Lily sat on the steps outside, arms clasped around her shoulders, hoping to preserve any warmth she still had inside her body. She hadn't thought about taking her keys this morning because her flatmate was supposed to be inside of the apartment and her job was within walking distance. She turned and looked at the sticky note that was posted on the door. It had some sort of excuse written on it, but it didn't make up for the fact that she was stranded outside of her own apartment when it was freezing.
Had I known it was going to be this cold, I would've brought my jacket to work.
She sighed, watching her breath crystallize into a little visible cloud. Her teeth were chattering now.
"Lily?" A voice broke her from her staring off into space. She recognized the voice, it was Alex, the barista who worked next to her at the cafe. He was bundled up with a large winter coat and a plaid scarf. Alex walked toward Lily, eyebrow cocked over his hazel eyes.
"What're you doing sitting out in the cold?" he questioned.
"Forgot my keys and my flatmate had to run on an 'unexpected errand.' I'm sure she'll be back any second now." she replied, trying to be nonchalant about the fact that her nose felt like it was going to fall off any second.
Alex plopped down on the space beside Lily on the stair, causing her face to heat up slightly. She scooted over slightly out of reflex, which was a terrible idea because the spot she moved to was even colder than the one previous. She looked over at him after she noticed he was making quite a lot of noise, only to see him unzipping his coat.
"Wh-what are you doing?!" she said.
"You're going to die of hypothermia in that thin piece of cloth you call a sweatshirt. Take my jacket." he said cooly.
"WHAT? N-no I c-couldn't! I mean if you give me your jacket then you'll be cold! I'm fine, honest!" she stuttered, holding out her hands to refuse his offer.
"Lily, you're shivering and your teeth are chattering. I'm not just going to let you freeze on the steps of your apartment." he insisted.
"Really! I'm sure she'll be here any minute! Don't worry about me!" she said back, trying to laugh to lighten the mood a bit. He stood up, looking down at her while he adjusted his jacket. She looked off to the side, avoiding his gaze.
"If she's coming back soon," he started before sitting back down, "then I'm going to wait here with you." He took her wrist, scooting her over next to him and wrapped his jacket around the two of them. Her face turned a bright red, warming her cheeks.
"O-okay." she said, trying to move a little closer to regain warmth. She sighed contentedly, and he smiled down at her.
Now they were warm together.
