Overview

The prison was first built by Ephraim Arc and Nicholas Schnee, around a decade after the end of the Great War.

Located about three miles north of Beacon Academy, Arcanus is the only prison in Remnant with the highest amount of security standards as possible, while also housing extremely dangerous criminals from all Five Kingdoms (This includes Menagerie, who declared themselves as the official 5th Kingdom of Remnant).

The prison is also known for vicious and brutal treatment of its prisoners. Under the ruthless authority of the current Warden, Jaune Arc, a former student at Beacon Academy and the current head of Arc family, Arcanus has become a living "hell-hole" to those in the prison.

To ensure maximum security, Jaune instituted a lockdown system in the building, and guards were ordered to use lethal force on any prisoner on sight if they were trying to escape or caught outside the prison. Although the prisoners were beaten time to time, Jaune ensured that there weren't any fatalities by healing them with his Semblance.

The prison also has a section called the Purgatorio, located in the dark, dank basement of the building where it houses the most depraved and psychopathic criminals, who are treated under awful living conditions with little food or water. Should the regular inmates continue to misbehave, they will be sent down there, with the duration depending on their behaviors.

Inmates

The inmates in Arcanus are criminals whom the death penalty is not enough. They are kept surveillance 24 hours with multitude of sensors and guards. Outsiders can visit prisoners, although their conversations are monitored and restricted, with visitors not being able to tell prisoners anything about the outside world and having a time limit on their conversation. Huntsmen and the police are also able to talk to the prisoners to conduct investigations.

Some prisoners with illnesses and injuries are personally healed by Jaune himself with his Semblance. Either way, Tartarus is the dark side of Quirks society, and it is said that anyone imprisoned there will never again become the same person they were once they are released. Some of the ex-convicts being have to sent to mental institution or committed suicide afterwards from the trauma.

The inmates all wear whitish beige jumpsuits with black numbers on the back.
