CHAPTER 2

Mulberry harbour , Britain.

It was about 6 o'clock early morning when I got to the harbour. It was a busy place .I could spot many ships , submarines etc. Many men were waiting to board into the ships. Most of them were soldiers like me.

I was looking for 'black shark'. The ship I would be travelling. I was looking around the harbour to find that particular ship.
Good that I didn't go asking anyone (mainly those who went past me and the ones around me ). where the ship was.
They might have thought I was nuts. The whole time the ship was in front of me and I failed to notice it at first glance.

Stupid me!!!

..................................................................................

Our ship took off  half an hour ago. Now here I am resting my eyes on the deep dark blue ocean below me. It is seems so soothing to my heart and mind.
I could sense someone approaching me from behind. I turned around to find a tall, dark haired handsome guy with a pleasant smile on his face.
"Hi! I am Jonathan West. Nice to meet you...and do I have the privilege of knowing your name?" Asked the guy.
I laughed at his way of asking my name .so formal.
I replied "Of course sir , you do have the privilege of knowing my name. It's Will Oxford".
Soon we both were laughing out load. Isn't it very unusual to laugh at such a situation 'on the way to war'.

He was a nice person. Though he spoke very politely  he had some good humour in him.
We were travelling on such a serious expedition but he seemed to be at ease the whole time. He was of my age.
He told me that he was from London.

So I assumed he was from a wealthy family.Yes, my guess was correct. He was indeed the son and the heir of a wealthy family.
Suddenly a thought occurred to me .
so I asked him." What is the need for you to come to war? You are the next and the only heir of the family."
For that he told me " A man's death is best recognized and respected if he dies for his motherland. Also it is a pride of a soldier to die in a battle field. And I think it is the most appropriate way to show my gratitude towards my country."

I was elated to find a person who thinks just like me !!!! Thanks to god I found a good friend like him on such a terrifying trip.
My little sister Anne was always the best at opposing my ideas. She thought it was foolish to become a soldier. From her point of view ,soldiers are some poor little creatures who are used buy the power greedy people to fulfill their own benefits.
So I feel it's pointless to explain these things to her .she is my sister after all.unchangeable.

It took us a few days to go to Ceylon. Meanwhile I learnt a great deal about the country.
The name Ceylon has been directly translated from the Portuguese word Ceilão. In 1976 British captured the coastal area of Ceylon.
From 1976 to 1815 they slowly captured the remaining areas and they made it their crown colony.

For Britain, Ceylon was a major source of rubber ,tea, spices, and many other things.
When Britain joined the war. Ceylon arranged for British Royal Navy facilities at trincomalee and British RAF( Royal Air Force) airfield at trincomalee. And many more all around the country.

We came to know that. This year (1941)  RAF took over the civilian air force at Ratmalana- near Colombo-(a city in Ceylon) to house additional fighter air crafts.
...........................................................
So here we are
Finally at Trincomalee harbour.
