Chapter 7: New Guy in Town
Mark's dark blue eyes slowly fluttered open, the harmonious chirping of birds outside his window graced his ears. Bright morning sunlight peaked through his blinds to bring a hint of natural lighting in the bedroom. The teenager laid in bed listening the peaceful noises of the nature. The serenity of this moment wrapped around every piece of his body, causing him to feel joyful. A calming mood overtook his body, letting him close his eyes to fall back asleep. Mark was snapped back into reality when he felt a cold, soft pillow thumped the back of his head.
"Hey, are you awake yet?" Luke asked as he stood near the doorway. Mark looked up and his lips curved down to a frown, "Now, I am.".
The human lifted himself off the bed and lazily searched for his spare glasses. He opened the nightstand's drawer to find a dusty pair of large, brown glasses. "I've haven't worn these since middle school." Mark examined the glasses, hoping that his current prescription would be the same as before.
As the teenager put on the glasses, his vision was crystal clear. He glanced at his phone to check the time.
"We overslept." Luke stated.
"Shit." Mark cursed at himself, the taller teenager was correct. It was 10:30 AM, he already missed his first three periods for the day. The joy he felt before drained out of his body, all he could think about was how fast could he get ready.
After he managed to get himself and Luke prepared in less than 15 minutes, he still had to worry about how they were going to get to school. Mark left his car in the school parking lot which left their only option to Luke's insane driving on his motorcycle. Though he wasn't happy about taking another ride on the demon's hell bike, the teenager lived by the phrase, "Beggars can't be choosers."

Luckily, the pair left out of the principal's office with their only punishment being a verbal warning.
"Well, if he's with you, Mark, I have no worries. I trust that it was an honest mistake." The balding principal with an aged, wrinkled face said with a bit of glee in his tone. "But, it isn't summer anymore. You both must come to school on time, no more fooling off."
"Of course, sir! This will never happen again." Mark awkwardly chuckled. In the back of his mind, he prayed for Luke to stay silent and not say anything to get them into more trouble.
The two walked next to each other, exploring the endless hallways to find their respected classrooms. "Mark, loosen up. You looked like you were about to shit yourself when talking to the principal."
"What was I supposed to do, Luke?! I thought you were going to say some dumb bullshit to get us into even more trouble!" Mark explained to him. "You're just lucky, I have a good reputation with the teachers."
Luke laughed loudly, "Such a teacher's pet."
Mark rolled his eyes, "I better get used to him being an ass. He never stops.". He made himself a mental note in his mind of that.
As the two teenagers arrived to their classroom, Luke abruptly stopped in his tracks, "I sense something.". He turned his head to look down the corridor, "I sense something big, but I can't tell what it is specifically."
The demon's brown eyes widened and his smile turned into his signature mischievous grin, "I got a plan, Mark. A really great plan."
"Luke, can it please wait until after class?" Mark begged with desperation in his voice.
"Fine, but meet me at lunch. Do you know anywhere private where no one can hear us talk?"
Mark pondered for a moment before answering, "The stairway. That's the best place I can think of."
"Perfect. Get ready for this, let's just say that everyone's gonna know my name by the end of the week."

The indoor stairway climbed all the way to the roof of the school. White paint chips began to fall off of the wall, the smell of mold on the ceiling burned the noses of anyone who entered. The stairs were narrow and tight, making anyone with claustrophobia panic after spending one second in there. Since there were no windows, a single bright florescent ceiling light beamed down, casting a shadow on the two who were planning for their next strategy.
"I can sense Heaven's army leader and their warrior so close to us, that it hurts." Luke's crimson red eyes glowed in the dimly lit room.
"I can't pinpoint their location, though. There's too many people and the school is such a big area, there no way I can focus on who's who. There's good news to all of this, I can sense a fallen angel in this school as well." Luke grinned widely.
"A fallen angel?" Mark's eyebrow raised as he asked.
"They are basically angels who were originally brought down to Earth to help their leader and warrior in the army. But, they got so comfortable in Earth's luxuries that they now pretend to be humans and hide away to avoid punishment from Heaven." The demon explained, looking at the stairs below to make sure no one was eavesdropping.
Luke lowered his voice, "If we can find this fallen angel, we can get some information out of them that can lead to who might be the leader and their warrior."
"So, how are you going to find out who it is?"
"That's the easy part, my friend. I simply have to become popular with all the school's major cliques and get them all into one small area to find our dear fallen angel."
Mark doubted that Luke could get popular so easily as he planned. He's been at the school for his whole high school career and he learned the hard way that people don't become popular, they're born popular. "You do realize that it's not that easy, right?" The dirty blonde tried to knock some sense into him.
Luke snickered at the other's comment, "Give me one week, Mark. By Friday, I'll have these mortals eating out of the palm of my hand."

This demon went out of his way to prove his friend wrong. He started off small by talking to his classmates and peers. Soon, it evolved into befriending the school's major VIPs. During his school days, he would schmooze with the rich kids near their lockers, gossip with the cheerleaders at the water fountain, and play sports with the jocks in the large field behind the school. After the final bell rings, he would enjoy the evenings hanging out with his newly acquired friends by either messing around town or sneaking some alcohol to drink and smoking in someone's car.
Friday came quicker than they both thought. Mark was putting his binders away in his lockers as he watched Luke stroll down the hallway, each step he took screamed out his confidence. Nearly every student in the hallway greeted him as he got close them, this caused for Luke's already massive ego to grow. It seemed that he had many female and male admirers with their eyes beaming bright like stars when they tried to talk to Luke.
"Luke, we have to hang out again after school!"
"Dude, come with us to soccer try outs. You would totally make the team!"
"I still have a huge hangover from last night. Thanks for hooking me up with the booze."
"Hey, Luke! I was wondering if you were free this weekend. Maybe we can have some more 'fun' together like last time."
Mark couldn't believe it as he stared at Luke. He was shocked to hear from the crowd of students that were practically on their hands and knees, waiting for a response from Luke.
"Never underestimate me, Mark. Or less, you're going to be proven wrong every time." Luke smirked at Mark, slamming the locker in front of the other's face.
"By the way, I narrowed down to which clique the fallen angel could be in." The taller teenager listed off, "The rich kids, the cheerleaders, the soccer team, or finally the volleyball team."
Mark took a moment to fully take in the situation before responding, "How are you going to get them all together then?"
Luke eyed Mark as if to say, "That was a dumb question."
Luke spoke out, "We're gonna have a party, obviously!" He brought the human close to him by wrapping his arm around his waist, "And, we're going to host it at your house."
"Do we have to?"
"Yes!"
Mark thought about it and mumbled out of annoyance, "If it helps us find that fallen angel, then sure. Let's have a party." He never thought he would be going to a party, let alone host one.
Luke yelled out in happiness, "I promise, it's going to be the best night of your life. I'll get some beers and I'll text everyone right now about it. We have to go to the store too! We need to get-"
Everything Luke was rambling slipped past Mark's ears. He was going through the cliques in his head, the ones that stood out were 'the cheerleaders' and 'the volleyball team'. Both his sister, Amy and his best friend, Tyson were in those groups. He started to worry if they found out if any of the two were the fallen angel. The teenager knew exactly what Luke meant by "get some information" out of them and he was not willing to hurt any of them for that. Mark hoped that at the party, the pair would discover someone else to be the fallen angel, not one of his loved ones.
