18 - Fragrance of incense
The temple was deserted. A diffuse bluish light was beaming through the pillared alley, which made an eerie contrast with the white halo beaming from the brass sculpture on the central altar. The fragrance of incense was heavy and the sound of chimes could be heard in the distance.
The atmosphere was becoming dense and heavy and Ever moved on and stepped inside the sacred building. She kneeled on the first step and kissed the white marble floor and whispered, "God Zeus, thy daughter is here. Grant me the access into your holiness."
Ever stood up. She heard footsteps coming toward from the temple. Her palms glowed with fire; she waited for the footsteps to reach her. There was a shadow, step by step the shadow grew huge and finally it relieved itself.
The dragon was the color of the night, not a coincidence, but merely a function of his multi-chromatic skin. Its eyes were lamp-like. It walked forward, head bowed submissively until it was in striking distance. It let out a rich, low, warning growl. Ever fixed her ominous golden gaze on it. The dragon stood across from Ever, its tail quivering and bristled. The temple was silent for a short instant before he lets out a loud snarl and takes a slow, threatening, step forward, lunging for Ever without warning. It opened its mouth and exhaled a wave of fire. Ever leaped into it, stretching her hands toward it and creating a water wall, destroying the wave of fire. Before the dragon Ever took her next step, she held out both her hands and began to pressure the air around the dragon, it struggled to free itself and sent another wave of fire from its fiery mouth. Ever had to give up on pressuring the air around it and create another water wall to defend the dragon fire.
The dragon took a step backward and shook its head in several directions. I stopped its motion and sent another fire wave to Ever, this time instead of the water wall Ever too sent fire to the dragon, she settled herself in a balanced positioned and sent fire waves from her palms. At first Ever felt the confidence of defeating the dragon but eventually the dragon began to dominate, she put her maximum strength on her palms but she became hopeless once she began to feel the unbearable warm of the dragon's fire. She backed and the dragon became stronger. Ever tried to concentrate and collect her shattered strength but she felt and then suddenly she felt as if the weight on her was loosening, she felt that the dragon was backing, she felt her strength growing. She turned her head and caught Cael next to her, supporting her. He winked and smiled at her. She gave relieved smile and both of them sent a final wave burning down the dragon. With a shriek of pain, the dragon flew up into the sky with a groan of defeat.
"Thank you," she muttered, panting.
He cupped her face with his left hand, "Are you alright?"
She looked around and no sign of Julian. She got alarmed. "Where's Julian?"
Cael bit his lower lip and replied, 'He's fighting with the blood drinkers."
"Cael, how could you?" Ever roared.
He couldn't will his lips to move. He stared into her fire red eyes. He remembered what Julian told, 'Her eyes turn fire red when she's terribly angry.'
"How can he fight the blood drinkers? Have you lost your nuts? How could you, Cael?" She demanded and ran toward the direction of noise of pain and death.
Cael's mind was blank and his eyes wide as he stared at Ever in horror. "I wanted help you!" Cael shouted and followed Ever.
Ever ignored him and ran as fast as she could. Cael gripped her arm and stopped, her palm lighted up with fire.
"Ev, listen." He pulled Ever into him. "I'll go to Julian, you go for the tree of life."
She sighed in pain and anger. After all she was the queen of Angelic, she had more responsibilities, her wrong move will result the death of thousands. She weakly nodded and kissed Cael's cheek. "Save Julian," she said and the Angel wings appeared on her back, it was quick than the last time, Ever felt no pain, she felt strength. With one last glimpse at Cael, she flew toward the temple.
* * *
The Earth land had been dry for a few days, warming under sunny skies, yet it still held the sweet rain water given in past days. Alicia kneeled on the ground and smelled the soil.
"What is it?" Albia asked, kneeling next to Alicia.
"Blood drinkers," she hissed.
"But there's no sign of any," Joseph argued.
Alicia stood up. "Can't you see? There's no sign of any common angel."
"We just stepped into the Earth land," Joseph argued again.
Alicia glared at Joseph. "This is my land. I know about my land more than you."
"Oh, come on. Stop it, you both." Parisa came in between Joseph and Alicia. "Let's go and do what we are here for."
Alicia once again glared at Joseph and took the lead. The others followed her; Joseph rolled his eyes and followed the others.
"I hate the big headed Water Angel," Alicia whispered to Parisa.
Parisa smiled and playfully nudged Alicia.
"What are you two talking about?" Albia asked, joining Parisa and Alicia.
Parisa winked at Albia and said, "We are talking about the handsome Water Angel."
Joseph rolled his eyes, annoyed and huffed. The girls giggled and talked so much more nonsense to annoy Joseph Angelo Water.
The casual laughter of the girls died fast, guillotined from their mouths. A blood trail led from the foot path into the Earth land forest. It wasn't a few careless drops from a bleeding nose or a cut finger; there must have been a couple of pints making the jagged red river and the splashes on the trees.
Alicia looked down at the foot-prints, a small hiking shoe. Her mind took the evidence and recreated a picture, a girl or a small man with injuries to their arms, blood flying outward from flailing limbs, moving the way panicked people do, quickly, stumbling, with frequent turns to check for their attacker.
Without warning a vampire appeared. With skin as pale as freshly poured milk and fangs protruding over the thin blue lips, he stood staring.
The only announcement of his arrival was a slight drop in the air temperature and the descent of absolute silence. Without turning Joseph knew he was there, pale in the shadows of the forest. His voice came, high pitched and cold, "Angels?" It laughed out loud. "Royal Angels," he corrected himself and laughed again.
It wasn't humorous for the Angel; they looked at each other, bored by the uninteresting behavior of the blood drinker.
Parisa lighted up her palms with fire, Albia twirled her fingers and began to control the air around her, Joseph rubbed her palms and created a water ball and Alicia raised her hand and green sparks came through the tips of her fingers and green sparks gave life to a plant in the blood wet ground.
"Do you want to battle?" The blood drinker asked.
Joseph sent a water ball to the blood drinker, Albia leaped forward and froze him, Alicia sent the plant she created toward the blood drinker, it hard on the vampire and his head fell on the ground and Parisa burned the head of the blood drinker.
"Good job, girls," Albia commented.
Joseph chuckled, "Me?"
"Good job, Angels," Albia corrected, laughing.
All of a sudden, Out of the ancient trees came hundreds of vampires. They emerged one by one from the forest edge. The Angels gathered together and regained their Angel powers. They fell back, allowing the last male to take the front, orienting them around the tall, pale skinned, midnight haired. It was clear that he led the pack.
"Angels," he bowed his head, sarcastically. "I'm Paulo Roosevelt. I am the leader of the blood drinkers in the Earth land."
Alicia stared at him, amused, so did the others but Parisa was busy thinking about which Roosevelt he was. Parisa has read about the whole Roosevelt family but she has never heard the name 'Paulo Roosevelt'. She looked at him; he too had the Roosevelt black hair and the dark black hued eyes. Her heart began to doubt about him.
"Where are the common Angels of the Earth Land?" Alicia demanded.
Paulo grinned. "You're late, my lady. They are no common Angels left in the Earth land."
The morning had broken like the sweet melody of a blackbird, full of promise, freshness and newness to come. Now it sat like a cold cup of coffee waiting to be drained away.
Paulo continued, "All common angels are now blood drinkers, the ones who failed to react against the venom are dead."
Alicia felt as if she's drowning in the deep Angelic Sea.
"How's comes that you're a Roosevelt?" Parisa asked.
Albia and Joseph looked at Parisa, amused. Alicia was too weak to focus her attention on Parisa.
"You can't be a Roosevelt!" Parisa yelled.
"Why do you care whether he's a Roosevelt or not?" Albia said, looking at Parisa as if she is completely insane.
"What are we doing now?" Joseph asked.
"Answer me!" Parisa demanded.
"Parisa," Joseph hissed at Parisa.
Paulo chuckled lightly and answered, "I am the son of Jonathan Roosevelt."
Parisa's heart melted like an ice cube in the Air land.
